I've followed this topic from the NBA point of view. The NBA no longer allows players straight from high school to enter the NBA draft. So, NBA hopefuls have to wait atleast one year at college X. After one year of college these talented players can enter the NBA Draft and make the big bucks. Now the NBA wants to make players wait 2 years instead of 1 year.

One argument I've heard for letting the kids play straight out of high school is, if these kids have the talent to play in the NBA they should be allowed. Just like if a kid were an expert plumber, carpenter, or artist. Pretty much most other occupations there are no age restrictions. Sorry to bring it up, but kids can join the army right out of high school.

Now the other side of this is, it takes time to become a responsible adult and college can help that. I remember reading Michael Jordan's take on this debate. From what I remember he said during college he honed his skills as a basketball player. Had he went straight to the NBA he wouldn't have had the same success he accomplished after 4 years of college.

I will have to say I side with the NBA and Jordan. I would even go the extreme to say that these NBA hopefuls have to complete 4 years of school and/or require them all to have bachelors degrees. I believe there'd be a lot less mistakes off the court by NBA players. Forcing these players to stay in college or even complete it, would give the NBA the kind of role models children deserve. That 4 years could be the difference between players taking a gun with them everywhere or thinking "hey I'm a rich professional player, maybe I should use my brain."

Now as for the rest of sports, I'm sure there's plenty of different examples of how age requirements could help or hurt a sport.

I really want to hear what you guys think, because I know people are all over the board on this one.

P.S. Sorry, we Web Producers normally don't take a stance. I couldn't resist guys.

Maybe one year is all good to wait. People should have a backup plan just in case if they don't get drafted into the Professional Sports.

If everyone remembers correctly, Kobe Bryant skipped college and went straight to the league and look how long he has been with the Los Angeles Lakers.

I have to agree that waiting two years or four years or whatever just to get into the Pro Sports is highly extreme. That's why you go to college first to expand your game techniques if you want to get into a Pro League, but there are some people in high schools all across America that have the skills that even some college players and hell, even Pro Players don't even have. But see it's not about the skills, it's about the age.

You know what, as long as kids graduate and get their high school diploma, (and for those who gets scholarships) or does decide to go to college for year or two or more, then that should just the be the legal requirement right there to play in Pro Sports.

I dunno dude, I'll be the first to say I've done a lot of growing up in college. The choices I made during freshman or even sophomore year, I definitely wouldn't make now. Well just a few. Unleashing all of the fame and stardom and money onto some teen who's a pampered athlete may not be the best idea. Not everyone can be as well tempered in the public eye as Lebron James. You might come out with some AI's. Now he has done some serious growing up. It took time for Kobe Bryant to get his skills up. He wasn't always the all-star he is now.

Make them go to college first. I have heard stories about some of the people drafted who could not even figure out how to use a washing machine. They (and this goes for all sports) need to learn a backup in case their career does not work out.
