Okay this situation just angered me. I was watching the news this afternoon, and I saw a story talking about the leadership in Milwaukee and Wisconsin. Now if you have the full gist on this by all means help me out here. But from what I can gather Milwaukee got a million dollars to fix up the transportation problem here. And the money has been collecting dust for years, because no one could agree on how to use the money. Now the federal government wants to take the money back, because our elected officials haven't done anything with it. What are we paying these people for? There can't be any real good reason, why they haven't come to a decision. When I say reason, I don't mean excuse. Bus routes get cut, and bus fare goes up to $2.00!  So now our leaders have to fight to get the money back, but after that what are they going to do with it? Honestly a city wide vote would do what our elected officials can't. I'm just thinking outside the box here. I don't know, am I freaking out for no reason? Should I call my alderman and give him an earful? Obviously I watch a lot of news, and I just can't help but feel helpless.

This is a serious situation. We need to be able to keep that money or get the money back.

So our elected officials aren't making any serious plans for the money huh? Well I Tell You What, I Got Millions of things that can be done with the money that we have now or use to have (if it hasn't been taken yet).

Our elected officials couldn't agree on the color of shmidt! They're standing on the end of a pier, with their hands in their pockets, watching the ship go by! Walker cuts bus routes, increases fares, and ridership drops. Go figure Scotty boy!!!! At least by collectively agreeing to do nothing is doing something I guess.

They should have used it to buy more salt.

I hope you all aren't surprised by this.
The decline of Milwaukee has been going on for decades.
There is so much they could have done with that money, but I am sure there were some who wouldn't agree and had childish attitudes.

The problem with this particular "pile" of money is that it can only be used for o n e thing...light rail. Not to subsidize bus service, not to patch pot holes, not to buy more salt. Light rail...that's it. The reason they can't come to a descision is because so many people are opposed to light rail. Some alderman have a "use it or lose it" mentality and are afraid if we don't use the money, the feds will never offer us money for anything, ever again. Which is hogwash! The problem is...even though the feds have ponied up 90 some odd million dollars, it's only a fraction of what it would cost to build a light rail system that works. Guess who would be paying the other two thirds of the cost. That's right...they would have to raise your (our) PROPERTY TAXES.

It's BS and they SHOULD give the money back to the feds. The alderman who have blocked spending this money ARE doing what I expect them to do. It doesn't cost us anything to do nothing or send back these millions. If we spend it, we have to spend it on something that will end up costing us three times as much of our own money just so we can spend "free money" in the form of federal funds on a project that few people want.
Make more sense now?

Sure does garbageman, thanks.
Wasn't it Norquist who was pushing the light rail years ago?
Is that when the Feds gave the money to the city?

Couldn't we send a proposal to the Feds asking if the money could be used for any type of public transportation?

This Journal Sentinel article should explain anything... my guess is the Brett Favre coverage preempted the full story from being aired.

I read the article...I stand corrected.

Real men correct themselves... you are a real man :)

The main thing is that the Common Council is getting on the arses of the people that caused this problem. And, according to Mayor Barrett's State of the City address, he wants to spend this money. I'd hope that with the backing of the mayor, this situation would get resolved.
