Racism (noun)
1 : a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

2 : racial prejudice or discrimination

According to the Merriam Webster Online Dictionary

There seems to be a taboo about this subject. Many people would say they don't consider themselves to be racist. But are they being honest?

According to a poll conducted by Opinion Research Corp. for CNN in December 2006, 1 in 8 Americans consider themselves racist. While this poll illustrates that racism exists, the respondents were mostly African American and Caucasian.

But we see in the news the disparage between Hispanics when it comes to immigration. The "Minutemen" are a strong force in parts of the border. Their mission is to protect the frontier from the mass rush of illegals entering the country (especially in an area from Texas to Arizona).

Historically, there's also been segregation of Asians. One example being during World War 2 when Japanese Americans were relegated to camps.

You could also argue there is racism between other minority groups as well. One Example includes strife between Blacks and Hispanics. In many larger cities where there is a larger concentration of both races, there seems to be more violence between the two groups. This is true in the Los Angeles area.

But how are things in Milwaukee? This is where I would like to take the discussion. Are you racist? Do you believe it is a problem in this city?

Let's start the discussion by posting a comment here. Remember, let's keep this discussion from being a personal attack of each other's beliefs. I want to hear your honest opinions.

Everyone has their own way to seeing how they get along with others in different ethnicity backgrounds.

In my eyes, I keep it real with everybody. I'm not racist. I don't discriminate other people because of the color of their skin. I'm honest about this because for one no matter who anyone is, I don't know that person just as well other people in the City of Milwaukee don't even know who I am. I personally would really get to know the person before I render a verdict on saying if I like them or not, but regardless of anything, the fact of the matter is that "I'm not going to tell someone head up that I HATE THEM because of the color of their skin, I HATE THEM because they hate African-American people like me or I HATE THEM because anyone else from other different ethnic backgrounds are better than someone like me and all other African-American people". No, I'm not going to say anything like that or anything even just as low as that comment or pure out of order. I wouldn't even mumble the comment behind my back or towards others because it's just pure disrespectful.

The real deal here is that this isn't the slavery years. I feel that there are just some people who fail to realize that. This is a whole new Millennium. Everyone just has to find their own way into getting along with one another. And here's something I don't tell people a lot (even though I'm not ashamed of it this either), but I'm not just all Black (African-American). I'm actually part White (Caucasian-American), So there for I'm biracial. People don't see me or don't actually know that because they don't ask. So therefore, I put it like this. I don't care who you are; if you talk about me, a family member, a friend, anyone of a different race background (even if I don't know them), I seriously will take that as a major offense because, you have no self-respect for yourself and you don't respect others.

Like I said, I'm biracial and I may not look like it, but I am who I am and I'm not ashamed of it. If you are more than one race and you try to talk about someone else, you just remember who and what you are and take a look at yourself in the mirror before you decide to criticize another person, because in my defense, you may not be no better than that same person or the next.

Is this a problem in Milwaukee? Yes, but it's not just Milwaukee. It's everywhere around our Nation. Can racism be resolved and can people come together? I feel it can and I know it can, But everyone needs to figure that out on their own....

I go by a person's actions - not by who/what they are. The problem is that being accused of racism is a catchall excuse at times. Some people think that Michael McGee jr is in jail because of racism instead of by his own actions. Some people think Michael Vick was arrested because of his race rather than for his actions. If you are for limiting immigration or sending back illegal immigrants you are considered racist by some.

I think the term racism is used too much and in a lot of cases in which it is not appropriate.

As long as there are different skin colors there will be people who apply characteristics to people of the other color. I am white. At one time in my life I held what would now be called racist views. I've been the victim of racism as well. I was denied even the right to apply for a job because I was white and male. I have been targeted with hate speech as well. I don't believe the canard that minorities can't be racist because they don't wield power. Memebers of a minority group can be racists and some are indeed racists. What began to turn the tide for me was when I got to know a couple of black guys in college. Then I got a job where I worked with a guy who was French-Canadian and who had been on the receiving end of a lot of hatred from Canadians. He taught me that if someone does you wrong you blame that PERSON and not the race. I never forgot that. When I became a Christian God really set to work on me and He's seen fit to use me to encourage folks regardless of race. My job takes in into the inner city of Milwaukee quite a bit. I've met a lot of wonderful folks there. I try to be on the lookout for the good stuff, the positive stuff there and everywhere.

One thing that I try not to do is, for lack of a better term, to hold everyone to the same standard. If some guy from Elm Grove acts like a jerk towards me, I won't excuse it because he's rich. Likewise, a guy from 27th and Locust. It seems that one thing that we as a nation have done is set up differing standards of acceptable behavior. Whites have a standard, blacks have a standard, Latinos have a standard, and so forth. We excuse bad behavior as a cultural thing. It's not. It's bad behavior and it's wrong across the board.

The one of the truly odd, and strong characteristics of America is racism. When people look back at America hundreds of years from now, they will look at how silly of a country America was for judging soley on the color of one's skin. You know most other countries judge a persons ethnicity, and where they're from and who their people are. Idk, I'm sure we'll look like real idiots for this one. Maybe history will judge Canada the smart ones after all.

All I know is that Racism does exist one way or another. But why does it exist? That's the question we need be asking ourselves. For me, I was told from day one in my family that treat people that you want to be treated. All about respect across the board, no matter whomever. With me being black, I can't help that. I was born with the skin color. No question. Am I ashamed of it? No. Don't have to be. I do my work just like everyone else. Has anyone heard of racism within the race? There's some of that too. I'm not kidding.

For Milwaukee, if you didn't know, this is one of most segregated cities in the U.S. And half of the time, some blacks are moving out of the city because of it. Mostly they go down south like Atlanta. But then I realized, like now, that racism is everywhere. Not just in Milwaukee. This is one of the most common problems in the country that needs to have an answer for.

When Dr. King talked about his four children, Yolonda, Dexter, Martin III, and Bernice, about the comment that "they would not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character", he was on point. The key word from that sentence was "character" not "color". In this day in age some probably doesn't understand what that means. Sometimes where I go, even when I'm driving, no matter the place, say like Mayfair or the Midtown Shopping Center, I get some odd looks from groups of people and ask myself, what are they staring at me for? Have they seen black folks before? Half of the time, I don't get odd looks and go about my business without harm. Is that to do with color? Nope. Just the attitude. Or as I like to call it, barriers of negativity.

Desertwinder, I'm curious about your comment. Why do you think you become racist here? And was there any one thing that may have caused you to change?

For anyone else... what does it take to end racism? Can you even get rid of racism?

Let me clear one thing up...I have seen racists from every walk of life. I have met African Americans, Asians, Hispanics and Indians that were SO prejudice! I do not believe that ANY race is better than another. I see the beauty in ALL skin colors. Skin color does not determine character, actions and morals do.

Only1Antoine read my blog

Like I said before, what it takes to end racism is to people to get to know others from other ethnic backgrounds. Know where they're from, know they're likes and dislikes, know they're religion, ETC...

We can get rid of racism. I don't "think"-- I know we can, but like I said before, "People have to learn to do it for thereselves" and know what racism actually means and not know how to draw more attention into making racism even worse than what it already it is now.

I think we need to do marches up here like they had did down South in the old days when Dr. Martin Luther King Sr. and Jr. was around and really know how to bring people together. Like Dr. King's niece, she was here in Milwaukee on FOX 6 WakeUp. We need to lead a march to end racism, because we may not know each other now, but we are all GOD's children in Christ and Our Lord and Savior want the best for us and I feel that his best is our best and we need to do a better job and speaking out and helping out others no matter who we are and what background we come from, because if there is anything we all have in common it's that we are all HUMAN BEINGS.

I will answer your question regarding my racist attitude. Yes, I am a racist.

I moved to Milwaukee in early 2004. I had a decent attitude toward people at that time. I had friends from all over the world. We went to school together, supported each other, laughed and cried together as we tried to get an education. Then we all graduated and we got jobs in the REAL world. I moved to Milwaukee and no one wanred me that I would have to work with and supervise MPS graduates. What a nightmare.

I have found that MPS graduates are illiterate, have nasty attitudes, refuse to get along with other people; they are argumentative, they try to intimidate, harrass, and threaten other people at work. They come to work for the sole purpose of causing as much trouble as possible. They are uncontrollable and unteachable; we have tried, believe me, we have tried so very hard. They are always doing something to bring attention to themselves in a very childish, churlish manner. They tend to live their lives in a manner in which soap operas are drawn from; they always have "personal issues" that they do not wish to discuss, but they take off work whenever they wish due to "personal issues" - this means that they do not work on Friday night, Saturday night, or Sunday night. They also do not work on Thursday night, which is the day before payday.

If MPS graduates are required to fill out a form or write a report in the course of their duties we have found that they cannot read or spell; they cannot put a simple sentence together that makes any sense; they cannot use correct grammar;

if we all thought the same and looked the same the world would be boooooorrrrriinnnnggg,

every hear this analogy..." if everyone were tall then nobody is tall " ...because it would be nothing existing to compare it to.

the only way to experience that you are tall would be to exist with someone else "shorter" than you.

(...and i do wish i was taller...lol)

if you can understand this analogy then you will find the key to ending racism....we must all realize that we are all unique and at the same time we are all one ....spiritually connected whether we believe this or not

....like i said before we all have a little racism in each of us .....either it's because we don't know or understand something or we get frustrated with another person's beliefs, music tastes, lifestyle, ....i could go on and on..

let's celebrate our differences and embrace them...it's a blessing ....plus it makes life more exciting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FOx6Fan, that's an interesting observation of each of us being racist. Bold, but important opinion.

But let's talk about this in terms of programs that we see out there like affirmative action or even the racial classification we fill on documents and applications. Should we have those tools or is it time to be color-blind?

I think that if they're going to ask people to fill out the "ethnic" portion on any form, it should list them all and have us have the option to check more than one box. We are not cookie cutter cut-outs. The last form I filled out, listed African American, white, hispanic, Asian and other. If black people are given the respect of being called African American, and Hispanics get the respect of having their own classification, why shouldn't everyone be shown the same respect? I hate the term "caucasian" or "white". Caucasian sounds like a disease... "Hey, I'm caucasian" that sounds worse than being a leppar. And white? I am not white, more like a pasty pink with olive undertones. My family is Italian, so why not Italian American??? Why do only certain ethnicities get special classifications? And what the hell is "other" on these questions? Is that for extra terrestrials?

desertwindrider read my blog view my photos

I think all of us should check "other." After all, how many of us are pure stock these days?

How long is that form going to be when we list Italiam-American, Irish-American, German-American, Bosnian-American, Russian-American, Native-American, Polish-American, French-American, Mexican-American, African-American, Chinese-American, Japanese-American, Martian-American, Australian-American, Cuban-American, Swediah-American, Norwegian-American, Haitian-American........

Just provide one box. OTHER. nuff said.

I agree, but, Centauri, that that would make sense and this is America. We always have to make things as complicated as possible and pay for all the additional expense with taxpayers' money. Otherwise the American government may go out of business.
