Train Travel Tips?

Tomorrow morning I'm going to visit a friend who's in grad school in southern Illinois. I decided to take the train rather than driving, because I didn't want to drive that far by myself and put that many miles on my leased vehicle... and it will end up costing me about the same amount to take the train as it would to drive...so why not let someone else take the wheel so I can sleep and catch up on some good books?

Here's the thing, though... I've never traveled by train before so I'm a little nervous.

Does anyone have any train travel tips for me?

I took the Amtrak to Baltimore for a convention back in 2001, right after 9/11. It was a lot of fun. You get to see parts of the countryside you don't see while driving. Just bring along a walkman or something to keep you busy and sit back and enjoy the ride. Getting up to use the bathroom is fun. The trains really do sway back and forth. It's like being on a carnival ride.
Be safe and have a great time!!!
Oh yeah, bring along some pocket cash. Snacks on the train aren't cheap. :)

I rode the train everyday for 40 mins each way, commuting in NY. LOVED it and wouldn't have traded it for the world. Bring something to read and your I-Pod. What Kat said about going to the bathroom is true... Maybe some snacks and something to drink?? You'll have a blast!! You will probably meet some interesting people too!

I like sitting backwards, because you can see what you are looking at a lot longer, than sitting forward. On the Metra (Chicago) and the METRO (New York) the seats flip back so you can sit either direction and/or make a 4 some or I guess put your feet up.. I took Amtrack moving a few years ago, but I can't remember the seating...

Bathrooms are same as an airplane - very small so if you don't want to have a big handbag to lug into the room, maybe have a smaller handbag with you...

OH, I'm so jealous!! Have fun!!

BTW, my friend is going to NY by train this summer, with their AAA discount, they saved over $100's for two adults and 1 child...

I have looked into the train for Orlando, Memphis and my next option is going to be California. Our next vacation is definately going to be by train!!

I love the train if your going to SIU I have to say it's a very long ride. Overall it's a fun ride although much of IL is flat and can be boring at times your chances of seeing some pretty cool wildlife is huge. I have to agree with everyone bring some headphones, I was on a 3 hour ride once sitting next to a person who felt the need to call everyone they knew. Dont forget the snacks and sneak a beer or two to take the edge off. Beers on a train can cost up to 8 bucks!

This is so true Bizzarro, it is FLAT and boring. That's why I'll probably never drive it again - at least all the way to Memphis by myself!
