This "non-profit" shelter for women, who's staff have been emotionally abusive, is getting a very shakey reputation. I found out that their board of directors get paid, this is definatly not the norm for non-profits. The director claims she does NOT get paid, even though she recently aquired a Mercedes Benz SUV and is having a new home built, not to mention regulary gets her hair and nails done and takes the dogs to the groomer.  how can they afford to pay 20 board members if they complain about the electric and food bills all the time? It would seem if you had a volunteer board of directors (which is how it's usualy done) there should be absolutely no problem in meeting the basic needs of their clients.

many aspects of this organization are not coming together, and are not making sense. if there's anyone who works with non-profits, or anyhting that could give some advise, I would appreciate it

Well will I have been working for non-profits for the last 13 or so years. I have all questioned the missmanagement of money. I worked for a women's shelter for three years about three years ago. Currently I work for a non-profit organization that is doing some cut backs because they are trying to look out for the best interest of the program. Sometimes those on top can not see that far down to the bottom. Funny you asked because I was just speaking with the Director about this and she stated that when they are trying to cut cost they go to what affects clients versus their salaries which most Directors have good salaries.

that, that's rediculous, they cut the most important parts? why not cut the two parts equally atleast. yes you need administration to run the org, but, it's in existance to HELP the people. i understand people need money to live, so they should get paid (staff not volunteer boards), but, I think, although I'm not in that situation, I think right now, if I had a non proffit, I would definatly try to get either cuts on both sides, or i'd even take a cut myself if I was getting enough to live on

The one thing it appears is non-profit really not-for-profit? If you are new to this, you will eventually learn that non-profit can be an interesting business. When I worked for two prominent nonprofit agencies in this city, I heard a lot and seen alot and sometimes depending on the people you work for or with and you become a voice opposing the practices, you can be left high and dry. I have seen many shisty people along the way from poor hiring practices to discrimination based on sexes, minority hiring in higher positions, and the allocation of funding for raises to those who deserve it. Nonprofit is a business just like every other business and you have those people who look at statistics versus the actual care of the person in need of services. People like you come along and see something flawed and you will either be put in a "beat them or join them" situation. The rude awakening is this. You are coming into this field with a heart of helping people, you will learn as you go as I have explained to students I have worked with in my professional career that you will see the money is based on numbers not need of services. Well I will say the numbers out weigh the need and it is sometimes more political than anything.

I have worked for non-profit organizations, and the board members and administrators all drove Mercedes, Porches, nice new cars, had nice homes, boats, vacations, nice clothes, etc. My next job? Board member or director of a non-profit. I want a good salary for a change! And yes, budget cuts means that the rank-and-file employees and clients get less.

this isn't one of those big huge coperate nonprofits, it's owned by one person and has two full time (one if is the owner) and one part time staff members. course they have like 20 board memebers, more board memebers then clients.

That's interesting, I would like to know the name of this shelter... I have an idea does Highland ring a bell? anyway I will agree with desertwindrider that non-profit administrators are very well paid while the bottom dwellers as I call myself and others in my position who do all the work and are closely connected and really know the needs of the clients. Most administrators and Board members don't have a clue what really goes on with clients and have the false belief that they are really doing for the clients...

I understand that confidentiality is involved and I do want to say again that it is MOST administrators who look more at numbers and statistics versus need! They also look at cut backs but don't every touch their own salaries...

but this administrator, apparently, doesn't have a salary.

there's too many questions.

so I've handed it over to professional investigators
