Alright I admit it i'm a HUGE Harry Potter fan.  I can relate to every character and the situations that they go through.  However many people say that the books/movies are to violent for kids.  Sure theres a "showdown" between Harry and Voldemort at the end of every book but many people don't see the message that's writin in it.  If Voldemort never wronged anyone then there would be no reason for Harry, or anyone, to defete him.

Most people who have read the books know and understand the message.  The books also teach honesty, loyalty, and perserverence.  Is that really a bad thing?  I mean, I could see not reading this book to a younger child, but if you can comprehend the messages and sicenarios of the books then why not read it?

Harry Potter series is on the ALA's (American Library Association) books most wanted off of shelves list.  They are wanted off shelves because of questionable approprietness and "celebrate" Wiccan (pagan witchcraft).

Please share your opinions on this topic.

Thanks,

The arguement that Harry Potter is somehow harmful to young people is an absurd one. Those who actually take the time to picket these books and movies are religious fanatics, and should be crucified themselves.
The fact of the matter is J.K. Rowling has done something truly spectacular: she drew young people away from the video games, the arcades, the Web,the television...and encouraged them to open up the door to their imagination and READ.
No author in publishing history has done it on the scale of Rowling. She deserves to be commended, not ostracized.
The subject of her books containing occult imagery and ideas is a mute one. EVERY fairy tale, nursey rhyme, and children's book ever written contains in one form or another characters and/or situations pertaining to the supernatural/occult. It's a ridiculous arguement, brought on by Bible thumpers who can't get young people in the pews because THEIR rhetoric is so godam* boring as opposed to Rowling's colourful, extravagant novels.
So read on, dear Tennis4evr. Enjoy these books and movies free of such foolish criticism by religious nuts who should know better.

J.K. Rowling has done something very rare. She has managed to capture the imagination of our young and allow them to soar to unlimited heights with complete freedom.

Children are READING again!!!!!!!!!!!...nuff said

Both children and adults alike are blessed to have the opportunity to read her material and go to places only your imagination can take you.

EXTRAORDINARY GIFT.

Dr. Seuss did this for me as a kid with the classic book "A Cat in the Hat"

I kept my face in a book.....i was chastised and called a nerd...but so what, in a book, i escaped....and the rewards later in life are well worth it!

Do I think the book is evil and should be banned? No. The book teaches people to be tollerant of all walks of life. That racism based on where you came from, and your lack of wealth is wrong. It teaches that good does conquer evil, and that friendship is the most important thing. I don't see how that's going to turn our kids into satanists or wanna be witches and wizards.

That being said... as the book progresses, it does get scarier and more violent and deals with more grown up issues. But what people need to remember, book 1 was written for a certain age of kids... and each book grew up with that group of kids. The 8 year olds who read book 1, were no longer 8 by the time book 5 came out.

Parents have to know their child, and if they don't think they're at the maturity level to handle certain themes.. then they have to be the parent. My bestfriend's kid gets easily scared... so he is not allowed to read the third book until his 10th birthday in September. He was able to read books 1 and 2 with her, but book 2 scared him a little too much last year, so now that he's a little more mature in what scares him, he can read book 3 starting on his birthday.

Besides that, even though I'm Catholic, I do know Wiccan has nothing to do with "Alohamora" and "Repairo."

Not to mention most of my friends with kids who've read the book do little more than play dress up, but once play time is over, they don't think about being witches and wizards in real life.

I grew up watching Cinderella, sleeping beauty, snow white... all of these had witches, fairies, wizards... I didn't run away to find my fairy godmother to turn pumpkins into coaches.

Parents need to parent their kids on real and fantasy. Teach their kids that the book teaches friendship, tollerance, and good triumphs over evil.. but that it does it in a fantasy way. (Kind of like the tv warnings of : these are professionals, do not try this at home.)
