I read a source several months ago that the price of gas would scale up to $4.00 per gallon by the Memorial Day holiday. I drove past a BP Gas Station near 76th and Industrial Road today and I noticed the price of $4.04 for regular fuel. Even further, I drove near the Chilton Bank/Gas Station near 76th and Good Hope and I saw the same price of Gas totaled at the $4.00 mark. I said this months ago, and I'm going to say it again: I knew this would happen. It's May, and about two weeks to the Memorial Day Holiday and the gas prices are soaring up to $4.00.

So what is there to do? Well if you're a type of person on a budget, or begining to sacrifce some loose change or dollars, I think it's time to save up and cut back. Save up as in put away some money earned and save it up part of a budget, in which there would be some to spare. Another is yes, cut back! Cutting back on the expenses that are least important and we all know what they are like DVD's, Music and so forth. Getting back to saving money, there is a trick of saving money and spending gas a little could be a balanced equation. I've mentioned this in other blog comments but, I'll dab some right here. It doesn't matter if the vehicle has a V6, or a Hemi Engine, but here are some tips from me, just to save up, from what I've learned in my 3 years driving (Yes I've been driving for three years. No need to go for the "yeah rights!"):

1) Look at your amount of gas right now. Yes, I said it. Right now. If you're gas gauge is at around a quarter or half tank, from the full mark, chances are you would be spending between $16.00 and $32.00 just to fill up the tank. The best bet, is to fill the tank when the meter is about 3/4 full, just to save your money.

2) Keep track of your mileage and stops per day. This would also help to save gas also. For me, I travel 5 miles between my sister's house and work and the same back. That's 10 miles in a day. A week is 50 miles between monday through friday.

3) Do not go fast over the speed limit! I've seen this alot in my new Grand Prix. The reason I mentioned this because this also helps to waste gas in your tank. Even if you just filled it up. Go for a moderate speed. This may also would make other drivers who are in a big hurry to slow down or just go around. Another reason is the fact that Speedtraps are in effect this season. I've think we seen them before like the Police, Sheriff, or maybe the State Troopers- Extra tip, when they have those tracking guns to track your speed, Just Slow Down! This is a must lesson for younger drivers.

4) As I mentioned before, you may need to do a budget. I don't care if you're working 20 hours per week and coming home with around $400.00 in your check. Or working 40 hours per week. Instead of spending about 40.00 dollars on CD's and Movies, for example buy one CD or a Movie. Or download a movie or song from Itunes or Walmart's Website. That way you're spending less and saving more. If you have bills to pay, like I do, save the money or most of it for that. Even food purchases. And focus on the Nintendo Wii or a new Widescreen TV later.

5) Take alternative ways of transportation. I'm thinking about going a bicycle ride this spring/summer just to leave the car at home on some weekends. Not only it will help me to save up some cash, but I'll get more exercise.

That pretty sums it up for me. These tips are just my suggestions to save up on gas and other expenses. It may take time to adjust to it, but it might be well in a long haul.

Great ideas, Stephen.
I'm going bike shopping. Not only will it be good for saving gas, but my doctor recommended it as a low impact exercise for my knees and a fun way to drop a few pounds. I have always loved biking. When I lived on the Eastside I biked everywhere.

I find it funny that they already know prices are going up before they even happen. Then are all happy cause they are making record profits. Well duh, anyone would if you jack them up that high. Its just a joke in this country!

3.73 up in Eden? That's a couple of cents cheaper than here in the Milwaukee area.

For some reason gas is always about 20 cents cheaper in Whitewater. I'm going there this weekend and I plan on filling up!

Look at total on these gas prices I found. Some of you might flip. Gas Prices 2008 - Milwaukee, WI

This was at a BP Station on the East Side today. That's not my total!

Second Highest Gas Price - milwaukee, 2008

Earlier this year, I found this at a Speedway near Hampton/Appleton Avenue. Look at the total. No Joke!

First Highest Gas Price - October 2007

And this was last year at a Speedway. Same location.

I can't wait to move back up north.

Where I'm moving they don't have that ethonal reformulated gas, and boy I'll tell you. My Jeep Grand Cheroke gets about 15.7 to 16.8 here... but up there I get 18+.

And its about the same price as down here... maybe a few pennies more in some areas.

So whatever happened to the politicians claims from a few years back about how adding ethenol was going to help keep the price of gas down? Now we know that not only does it not do anything for fuel efficiency, but it also pollutes MORE than gas without it does. And if you haven't noticed the whole state is being FORCED to use this ethenol watered down garbage. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!!! Your representatives are screwing you at every turn, and they're flipping you off as they do it.

Not the whole state. When we head UpNorth we get the "regular" gas. My husband brings along big gas cans so he can get good gas for the riding lawnmower. He said the reformulated gas is terrible on lawnmowers and trimmers.

well, E100 does have a higher octane (about 106), but when its blended with gas, its burn cycle is different. In cars that are E85 compatible, the engine can change its timing to take advantage of the ethanol, but for most cars... the extra power is lost. E85 can actually pollute worse as well, since the lower burning temps of ethanol prevents petrol from burning 100% in some engines (once again, depends on engine timing, compression, etc). E100 though... there is some real potential. Can be made for less than $2 a gallon, same efficiency as gas per gallon, runs cooler and cleaner (actually cleans tar deposits from gas), and is renewable.

Personally, I think those hybrids where you get the first 50 miles from 100% electric are the next big thing though (and then the gas engine kicks in). It would mean at least 1/2 of all daily commutes (anyone going 50 miles or less) to work would be gas-free.

Earwig, glad you brought that up. I had forgot about the claim that ethanol was going to keep gas prices down. From the economics standpoint, that made just no sense since all it was doing was adding a (presumably) cheaper component to gasoline. So, more money for the oil companies since they can already charge the same amount selling less gas. That happened until the ethanol companies (AKA "big grain") started trying to price ethanol the same as gasoline.

Loripav, like everyone else, I can't stand gas prices. The more it goes up, the more I have to set aside for something else. It's crazy.

For others, the ethanol gas, that always struck me. Yeah, I've heard about the profits about it supposed to keep the regular gas prices down in all, but what was deal with that with the prices of regular unleaded, premium and others keeps going up? Just questioning.

I don't think I'll change to a hybrid ever.

my cousin got one, and she said something happened mechanically to the engine, and it costed her thousands of dollars to repair compared to a normal engine. She said in the long run, all the gas money she saved went into fixing the car.

I've been hearing a lot of stories like that. I'm getting a Yaris. My friend has one and she gets 38 gallons to the mile when she was able to find the ONE station that still didn't have Ethenol. Better than my 16mpg or my pontiac's 28mpg.

He an idea, we put excise tax on all food and water products leaving this country to 12 times it's current price and use the money that is generated to pay the American people back for these outragous fuel prices. We can outlast longer with tired and hungry machines then they can with tired hungry and thurst terrorist.
