I saw a shooting star

Really, I did. I was picking up my daughter in the Franklin - Hales Corners area (where the city lights are clearly dampened) and right in front of us, a ball of fire appeared out of nowhere.
It was too high in the sky to be a firework from some neighborhood. And it certainly couldn't have been an aircraft of any kind -- because after about three seconds, it vanished into the night sky.
Turns out, after confiding with Vince Condella, what we saw was indeed a shooting star -- or more technically known as a bolide. When I got home, I had to look it up on the web. Turns out, these bolides can be as small as a grain of sand -- or as big as a boulder -- and turn into fireballs as they enter our planet's atmosphere.
The sight of this thing in the night sky mesmerized me and my daughter.
And yes, we both wished on it.
I just have to say...

The weather this week has been out of this world! I could take this kind of weather 350 days a year -- and let it rain or snow the other 15.
What's so great about the weather we've been dealt? It's warm during the day -- but not overly so. It's cool at night -- although no need to throw an extra blanket on the bed. And everyone's in a great mood.
Funny, except for possibly one week in August, we really haven't had this kind of a nice dry spell with cool temps all summer long. Bring it on.
Rain: It's a relief...

I'm the kind of person who relishes every moment of beautiful weather we have in Wisconsin -- no matter what season. If it's nice outside, whether hot or cold, I'm out there.
But I have to say, it's a little bit of a relief to have a day of rain back in the forecast. Before you say I'm nutty, let me explain.
When it's nice outside, I'm compelled to take advantage of the weather -- do stuff outside, take care of yard work, toss the ball with my son. I can't plop myself in front of the TV because I know the nice weather won't be around for long.
With the rain back in the forecast, I see it as a good excuse to catch up on TV or finish up some of those indoor chores that have been neglected because I've been spending so much time outdoors.
Don't get me wrong. It's a free country -- and I could do any of those indoor things any time. It's just easier to do it when Mother Nature gives me the knod.
Swamped too...

Yup, had water in my basement over the weekend too. Three of the four walls were leaking.
And that's in part because the driving rain was filling up our window wells. Wouldn't have believed it could happen -- had I not seen it with my own eyes. Spent Saturday evening with buckets scooping water out of those window wells.
Oh well, them's the breaks.
What a day...

It's difficult for anyone living in Wisconsin to understand how a tornado could possibly form and tear a path of destruction in the month of January.
For those of you who haven't had a good look at it, I strongly encourage you to check out the photos a lot of FOX 6 viewers sent to the web team. CLICK HERE to see them.
There's also lots of great video available at the click of a mouse. CLICK HERE to check that out.
As for being in the newsroom during this time. It was wild. Everyone running around, manning the phones, taking action -- it's the kind of day that makes working in the news biz fun! It's what newsies like me live for. Although I have to say, when things began to calm down, it was like a caffeine buzz that just ended -- I was pooped.
There's more tornado coverage to see -- stick around. We'll have plenty of video and pictures for you to use.
What a crowd! Got to do the ride with my family on Sunday -- like I have for the past few years. It's always a lot of fun being part of such a big event with so many people -- especially when we're all riding.
The only dicey part of the ride -- the weather. I was originally registered to do the 25-mile ride to Grant Park and back. I've done it before -- no big deal. But at St. Francis High School (which is the turn-around for the 15-mile ride), the skies were getting black as can be. My family and I agreed, let's cut our losses and head back without doing the full 25.
As it turns out, we only got dripped on -- and probably could have done the entire thing. But in this case, since my kids and wife were with me, I think we made the right choice. It was still a great ride!
The weather's finally warmed up enough for the dandelions to grow. If you haven't done so just yet -- it's probably time to fertilize your lawn -- and let that chemical kill the weeds that are just now beginning to pop up.
I'm a firm believer in the Scott's products. But I wondered if anyone else used something that really works great for them. I was tempted to use corn gluten -- because Ted Perry suggested it in one of his "Going Green" stories. Check it out by CLICKING HERE.
In the end, I went with what I know.
It would be hard to top this past weekend for great motorcycle riding conditions. Full sun, warm temperatures. It would have been nice for it to be a little less windy -- but I'm not about to get greedy. It's not often we get three days of solid sunshine in the middle of summer.
Anybody else hit the open road this weekend -- whether on a motorcycle, bicycle or maybe a convertible??
Spring garage cleaning...

Already done it. Last weekend, when the sun shone down, I hauled everything out of my garage (where does it all come from) and put it all back nice and neatly.
Here's the question I want to throw out to you all. I wanted to get all the winter grime off my garage floor to stop tracking it into the house. I use a little water and ordinary dish soap. Worked pretty well. But I wondered if anybody else had any better solutions this the salt, grime, mucky mess that lingers on the garage floor.
C'mon Mother Nature!?!?

Sheesh... Throw a couple of 80-degree teaser days in late March and we're all thrown off. Isn't that something? I mean, I've lived in Wisconsin my whole life -- know what it can be like here in spring. Heck, I've seen the snow on Mother's Day weekend. We should all expect it. Then why is it so difficult to deal with these colder temperatures after we get a hint of what's to come?
Guess the motorcycle will have to stay in the garage at least another week -- battery tender and all.
