Democratic Presidential candidate Senator Hillary Clinton is calling on the Bush Administration to boycott the Olympics opening ceremony -- not the entire thing, just the opening ceremony.

The reason? To press China for its crackdown on Tibet.

Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not? BLOG IT!

Either way the Bush adminsitration is screwed because no matter what they do it is going to be wrong, but if you are going to say it is ok to go to the rest, they what statement are you making by not going to the ceremony? Do you think the Chinese really care if we are there or not? I think we should just stay out of it for once. Let some other countries deal with it.

I don't think that Senator Hillary Clinton's call for the Bush Administration to boycott the Olympics opening ceremony will have any effect what so ever on anything.
It is mind boggling to think that the IOC even awarded the Olympics to Beijing! The most populous and polluted city! It has been likened to awarding the Olympics to Nazi Germany 60 years ago.
In any event, I think they are going to have their hands full during these Olympic games in Beijing. I believe there will be plenty of protesters along with violence as well. Terrible choice, just terrible. What were they thinking???

I think the Chinese care very much if we no show the opening ceremony. It would be very embarrasing to them to have a country of our stature say "We'll come for the sport but not the party."

Plus, I'm quite certain other countries would back out of opening night. The story then becomes "these countries aren't at the opening ceremony and here's why."

I too am still baffled as to why the Chinese were allowed to host these games. I believe we should compete (it wouldn't be fair to athletes to keep them home) but it wouldn't bother me a bit if the Olympics opened and we weren't at opening night.

I agree that it would be a good idea to boycott the opening ceremony. And if I were an Olympic athlete I would think twice about competeing. Not for political reasons, but I would fear for my health what with the reported pollution situation.

Well hooray for Hillary, like she really cares. Just politics as usual for her. It's probably a good thing she won't be going - she might be pinned down by sniper fire.

I think it should be totally up to the athletes whether or not they participate in the opening ceremony or the games. The Olympics is not about politics, its about young people competing in sports. I think it's time the politicians and the rest of us realize it's not about us, it's about the athletes. Let them do what they feel is right.

Put yourself in the athletes shoes. You work your entire life to get to be the best at your sport and some idiot politicians decide to make a statement. Let the games begin and let the politicians and activists go find another stage to play on.

I would support the US not participating at all in the Olympics. I know its not fair to the athletes, but that has always been a risk of the international games... tough love I suppose. Olympics have been cancelled before due to politics.
1940 winter olympics for instance... which didnt resume until 1948!

Considering people are being killed by China (have we forgotten that China is still Socialist and Communist and still an 'enemy' in many ways?), I dont think anyone should be complaining about not being able to participate in a 'game'.

I am shocked that the Olympic Committee hasnt stepped up already and changed the date and location. It has happened in the past for similar reasons, and considering the circumstances, I think it should happen again. I think that would send China the message, and that Olypmics shouldnt be held in any country that is in any sort of international or civil conflict... it undermines the intent of the games. I also think that the 'crap will hit the fan' if the games do continue... there is so much potential for an international incident to happen now... Munich anyone? There will no doubt be demonstrations (the games will provide extra publicity) in a country which is very 'intolerant'. I think its a bad situation waiting to happen, and it will cast a shadow on the games no matter what which is unfair to the athletes. Depending on what happens, and how China will no doubt react to any disruptions, it could lead to international conflict same as WW1 and WW2 (yes, many argue that it caused this one as well since WW1 led to WW2 really)

How come everyone is concerned with China killing people and how wrong it is and because of it we should not participate in games. Yet, Saddam and sons were killing just the same and we actually did something productive about it and we are the evil devils. In my opinion dammed if you do and dammed if you don't. Do what you want.

When are we going to learn to keep our noses out of other people's business??
