It has been a weird winter / spring in our house! Everyone has been taking turns with coughs, running noses and fevers.

One day when we were all feeling relatively ok we decided to go out to eat. I'm sitting at the table...laughing at Tre (who at 22 months has given up high chairs alltogether since he was 18 months) so he has been sitting on a normal chair and you can just see his eyes peeking up over the table! Sami is coloring with the crayons the hostess put on the table and Bryan is indulging himself in the bread basket while I sip on my beverage (ok a beer).

Suddenly we hear the kid at the next table scream angrily. The man at the table is annoyed and tries to get mom to hush the child. The mom frantically looks through her big ole bag of tricks (I'm assuming for a snack or toy). WRONG! She busts out with the Tylenol and gives her daughter 2 dropperfuls. Mind you the girl looked to be about a year and a half or two at the most. I thought it was a weird thing to do.

"Here here here...here is your Tylenol" mom said to the girl. "Now be quiet".

I brought it Bryan's attention and said "This is why they're starting to pull meds for infants!". As we were finishing dinner, the little girl started wailing again and mom frantically busts out with 2 more dropperfuls of Tylenol.

Now I AIN'T no doctor, BUT, it is my guess that girl had 3 more dropperfuls than she should have been given.

And it didn't appear that the girl was in any pain whatsoever. But judging by the big grin whenever she got the Tylenol, my guess is that she gets it quite often.

We were in a family restaurant with LOTS of kids. Kids cry. Kids make noise. If you're gonna get frazzled at every little peep "johnny" or "suzie" are gonna make, get your food to go...but please don't load your kids on the drugs because you don't know how to be a parent!

Right on, Jen.
I knew of another "mom" who did the same thing with Benadryl. She would even joke about how it "knocks them out". I knew her mother, so I told her what she was doing. She immediately called her daughter and had a discussion with her about parenting.
Sometimes a child just wants a reassuring hug or wants to be noticed.

Exactly!

You always gotta pack enough stuff to entertain your child...even some snacks till the food arrives.

I knew of a daycare provider that gave the kids benadryl to make them take longer naps. Let's just say she is no longer doing childcare. She should be in jail but just an ole' slap on the wrist. As usual.

OMG! Seriously?!?! Thats HORRIBLE!

On a SLIGHTLY different note, can you imagine how many infants are getting child or adult cold meds now that the infant stuff has been pulled?

Yeah she was a real prize. She just made the mistake of telling to many people about it thinking it was funny.
I think Tylenol is great for a baby when they have a fever or are teething, but a cold needs to run it's course. Cold meds do not cure colds. Nothing does. Fluids & rest are all they need. Parents today dump cold meds down the throats of their kids the minute they have a sniffle.
When we were little I don't ever remember seeing or ever getting medicine of any kind unless we HAD to go to a doctor for an ear infection or something that required an antibiotic. I think even those today are given out to freely. Generally your body can fight most things off by itself if given time.

Sit me next to the overly-conscientious parents any day versus the zookeepers who are oblivious to the wailing of their dozen or so rug-rats crawling about the restaurant/movie theater/bookstore/[insert otherwise peaceful venue here].

Tylenol? Phfpt! They should make St. Joseph's Quaaludes for Children. Or at least equip the other patrons with blowguns and tranquilizer darts...

Overly-conscientious? I would hardly call giving Tylenol everytime your child makes a peep overly conscientious.

Perhaps that wasn't your point. I just felt I had to say that.

I really feel like i didn't do my part and report this woman who shouldn't even be a parent. Drugging her kid up in public should be a crime.

blah.

Just as long as you're cool with my blowgun/tranquilizer proposition, I won't push the rest of the argument...

I allways make sure that my children had a nap and a diaper change and a load of little stuff to play with when we go to a resturant. When I went shopping I would make sure that the children had already eaten too. I loved taken my children shopping with me because everyone just went nuts over twins.

I also forgot to say that my strpmother did tell me once that when her kids were babies, she would give them meds so the child would sleep. I told her that this was not right. When my children were upset, I would give the child a bath. rub their back, check the diaper, and just go threw all that I could without giving the child a drop of meds. If that baby didn't have a fever, they never got meds. A mother can prety much tell that if the child has a couph or pulling on the ears, that is when I took the child in to get their ears checked. I am a pro at detecting ear infection. My children had ear infection all the time until the tonsels come out. When the baby just had a little conjestion, I would have the himudifire in their room. The body has to work itself out.

Even singing works wonders. If you keep your cool and sing crazy wacky songs....kids love it! Thats what I do....I won't say anything about the dancing! Haha

There are many times we wouldn't go out and eat because Tre was acting like a "monster"...people forget that crying is how babies communicate. Its what they do. They're not doing it to make our lives miserable, even though it may seem like that at times.

jjg----as long as i can use it right back at ya! haha.

You are so perfect. Can I kiss your ring my lady? Way to pass judgement. I'll bet you live on the east side, or Mequon.

Hey now...I don't pretend I am perfect, but i sure in the hell would never put my kids health at risk with overmedicating them. When i see a child under TWO getting 4 dropperfuls of Tylenol in less than an HOUR...thats TRAGIC...no matter how much you would like to believe the PARENT had rights. What about the rights of the CHILD? What about the HEALTH of the child!?!

And no, I have never lived on the east side or mequon.

And whats with the ring comment? I don't get it.

I simply wrote about an important issue and could really care less if you agree with my blog or not...and you have no idea what I am like as a person...as you have never seen me or met me.

Oh look, Duarschloch is stirring the pot again.

I saw that one of the other bloggers posted something about the use of Benadryl to make the kids sleepy. Several years ago a baby under one years of age died at a daycare provider because they were giving Benadryl to infants to keep them quiet. It always amazes me when I hear things like that. How stupid can people be? You wonder if people read the back of the bottles before giving this stuff to their children. Too much Tylenol can cause damage to the liver.

This is the article about the Benadryl.

Jen, way to go. Upnorth, the blog you are talking about I think was from Pinks. That was a while ago. But yes, this is a problem and Jen has a right to bring it up. If that child received three times the dose, what do you think is happening to his or her liver? Tylenol is especially known for doing lots of liver damage even with just a few extra doses. People actually die that way.

Actually Mrs. Tracy, it wasn't Pinks blog, it was a blog he wrote and also a comment he left on another blog (both recently). It seems that most of the comments he makes are done so to cause reaction. That of course in only my opinion.

I have TWO FABULOUS kids. Every Sunday I go to karaoke not because I sound good but because its fun. I spend time on MySpace keeping in touch with friends and family(http://www.myspace
