I understand the purpose of a wheel tax to improve and maintain the roads, but isn't it a shame there is no way to recoup a wheel tax from the commuters that travel to Milwaukee everyday, add to the destruction of the roads, and then go back to their sububan homes untaxed for their contribution towards wearing down the roads?

I totally agree 'jazzbode'.. why would we alone in Milwaukee be 'HELD UP" for this? I just love the way these aldermen/women come up with this jazz. Why doesn't the County come up with a 'better material' to cover these roads. I don't think that extra money they are asking for would end up there any way. I think the aldermen/women should cough up the cash for this brillant idea or else agree on a 'Tollway' in and out of Milwaukee/Wisconsin.

Lately everytime these milwaukee alderman open their months I'm angry. Why should people in Milwaukee bare this cost alone. How many people outside of Milwaukee use our roads. What about people in Milwaukee who have a couple of cars ,trunks and bikes. I myself have 4 vehicle register in Milwaukee how fair is that. I sure don't drive them all every day but I keep them registered.

I think it's hilarious that they want to charge anything for doing THEIR jobs that they are already paid to do (and not a very good job at that). The roads STILL look like BLEEP. Not too mention, I thought the money people spent on lottery and is never claimed goes to the roads and property tax relief? Why is it the public has to pay more for the government to do the work it's supposed to do? They want more money for police patrols??? Isn't that what the police are SUPPOSED to do? Isn't that what they are paid for?? The same with filling potholes. That is the job of the D.P.W. and , since when can a business charge more because they are doing more business? So, because they HAD to work people pay more....lol.
It's all becoming so absurd.
I guess I should start charging customers for the paper I use and because I had to type up faxes and other documents. I mean, afterall, I am working harder , so why can't I charge more?
Maybe Fox6 should charge us per story for viewing them?
That seems to be the governments theory lately.
"If we have to REALLY work people pay us more."
I suppose it is cheaper just to sit on your butt.

Geez... why dont they just get with the program and adopt a toll system? If you put it at the city limits (or slightly beyond, maybe even state line), you could collect on all the traffic that passes through, yet leave the residents alone (for the most part). That way, you are targeting the right people, since freight tonnage and exports are the largest growing segments on the WI highway system.

Yeah right, like Illinois' roads are something to aspire to. NOW, if the transportation funds weren't constantly being confiscated and used for everything other than what they are supposed to be used for there wouldn't be a problem in the first place. And, if the bid process were a bit more controlled there might be some honesty and accountability on the part of the road builders, but none of that is in place, so we just keep paying, and paying.

GET A FRIKKIN CLUE.

The goal of the city was to allow the roads to get so bad nobody would mind a property tax increase to fix them .The money collected would be used for everything but roads .Wheel taxes would be added later to fix the roads since the property taxes couldnt cover the costs. Now Barret will have to explain why he will increase property taxes since the wheel tax must be used for roads .

Barrett has said he would veto a "wheel tax" but he wants to increase the "snow plowing fee" on your property tax bill by $5. Once again placing the burden on property owners. The idea behind the wheel tax was for everyone, including renters and commercial enterprises with multiple vehicles registered in Milwaukee, to help pay for road maintenance. Either way it still lets the out of towners who contribute to the deterioration of our streets off the hook. But then I drive through the suburbs regularly and I don't pay to maintain they're streets, so that's a wash. If they dropped the snow plowing fee from my property tax bill and no longer charged property owners for "assessable improvements" and gave me an iron clad guarantee that the money from the wheel tax would be used exclusively for street maintenance and nobody could "Doyle" the money and use it for something else, I would be in favor of it.

It would be nice if it would really do something to improve the streets, but I think it will be mis appropriated like alot of the monies coming into the gov't. Just ask the alderpersons how much of a raise they'll vote themselves this year. Shame, shame on them.

That is exactly my point jazzbode. The taxes we pay are supposed to be in direct proportion to the services provided by Government. Government has taken it upon themselves to provide unending services to those who make irresponsible choices, from the earnings of those who are responsible. On top of that, "they" get to decide how much they give themselves, and what kinds of benefits they receive. Then when it is discovered that there has been a questionable "benefit" added (Ament's scam) the public has no recourse, and are made to pay even though everyone knows they're being ripped off. It is poignantly obvious that the system is broken, and those in a position to fix it have no compelling reason to do so. When the people's trust, and their earnings are so severely abused, and their ability to elect honest people into office is thwarted by those who benefit from corrupt Government, they will find some place where there are honest people running the Government. This is why Milwaukee is becoming an industrial ghost town, and those who do live, and work in Milwaukee are being made to pay ever increasing taxes. Elect those who will admit, and promise to deal with the problem of Aldermen, Mayoral, Common Council, and Civil Servant's pay and benefits are out of line with the average citizens ability to pay. Taxes are being used for things they were never intended and the decay of corruption is taking it's toll.

Milwaukee government seems to be concerned with where their next raise is coming from to bother with little things like decent streets. I can tell you that Milwaukee's streets have damaged numerous vehicles in my social and business circles. And who has to pay for those damages? NOT Milwaukee's government. It's the owners of the vehicles that got stuck with paying for the repair work. Now Milwaukee wants to charge a wheel tax? How insane is that? Vehicle owners are paying twice!

Retirement in sight, and starting to think about a third career. It's getting to be time to take my ball and bat and go home. Need to start thinking about which tax-free state will get my pension money.
