I feel like I could have been killed. The truth is - there wasn't even an accident.

Have you ever seen the commercials for Bell Ambulance? Doesn't it say, "in a life threatening emergency, dial 911."? My question is...does that mean they are not transporting life and death patients?

The reason I bring any of this up is because I was driving on Sunday and a Bell Ambulance was driving with it's lights on, but no siren. I was going east with a green light and the ambulance was going south. My boyfriend saw the lights before me and panicked, which in turn panicked me. I saw the lights - slammed on by brakes - THEN the driver turned the siren on.  I never entered the intersection, but I feel like if my boyfriend wouldn't have seen the lights first, I would have stopped later and the ambulance would have hit me, he did not even slow down for the intersection.

Anyway, I was wondering what you all know about ambulances, and what the rights and responsibilties of the ambulance drivers are?

I don't know much, but you would think that they would want to avoid an accident as much as the other person. I can't believe they were driving with lights and no sirens. That was stupid on their parts. My uncle had an accident like that and was in the hospital for a very long time. He was in a coma for a while and had issues for a very long time.

My boyfriend insists that the only ambulances that are transporting life and death patients are the city ones, but I don't really know.

i believe by law that the emergency vehicles need to have their lights and sirens on while going on an emergency call. great job on the posting of this blog, ididwhat.

In this situation the siren ought to have been on or you or others might have needed ambulance transportation yourself. God was watching over you and your boyfriend that's for sure.

Did you call Bell Ambulance to complain? I had a concern once, and they were very nice when I called. They explained the situation, and even called me back a few days later to tell me how they changed their policies to make sure the same thing wouldn't happen again.

I didn't call to complain, I was so upset at the time that I didn't notice a vehicle #, and didn't think to call. I certainly will if something like this were to happen again. Thanks for the advice.

Something simular happened to my cousin almost 8 years ago now, and my story does not end like yours. My cousin was walking across the street and he had the right away when out of no where a Greenfield cop in an SUV was racing to a man with a gun call, the cop had on no lights or sirens and before my cousin could react he was hit by the cop and had no chance. He was still hanging on to life when he got to the hospital, but died minutes later. The hardest thing is I was watching the 6 oclock news waiting for my husband to come home from Southridge mall that same night ( and this was before we were notified) and I remember thinking how bad I felt for that poor mans family. Just as the story was ending my husband came home and told me that he saw a man walking across the street at south 76th street and Layton ave. get hit by a cop, and we did not find out till the next morning what had happened. I just want you to know his name was Armin Henie. So Armin I will love and miss you forever.

Not long ago, I was heading east on Janesville road. I was in the left lane, sitting at a stop light. The light had JUST turned red, I stopped. It was heavy traffic, with cars behind me and to the right of me. DIRECTLY behind me was an ambulance (Hales Corners ambulance). My truck no sooner stops and the ambulance driver decides to turn on the lights and siren! I freaked out and looked around for a way to get out of his way as he began blaring his horn for me to move. I had hoped that the light would have changed to green so I COULD get out of his way, but instead, I checked to make sure there was no cross-traffic coming, and I went through the red light to clear the way for him. I was pissed to say the least. I'm in my truck with 5 of my kids and this hotdog pulls a stunt like this??? I think it was stupid of him to do. Didn't he realize that by hitting the lights and siren and his horn at this point MIGHT have caused someone to panic and make a DEADLY mistake?
