Wow, I was out in my garden last night photographing my flowers..... when all of sudden...WHOOSH!!! BUZZZZZZZZZ..... I come across the HUGEST bees I have ever seen!

"Now this is coming from a person that is eye level in the gardens across the area almost daily..."

Even the wings are Big~ and there were 5-6 of them so I dont think it was a Queen Bee? Any ideas?I hope they're not the KILLER Bees! Ha ha... No wonder they call It: Bee balm.. It is one of my favorite  flowers! Its like fireworks!

Hi Vanessa. Scary pics..lol.
I'm allergic to bee stings.
Killer bees are smaller and much more aggresive. They would have stung you.
Those may just be your garden variety bumble bees. Those are some big ones!!
Beautiful flowers too!!!

Pretty pictures Vanessa. Although that is a really big bumble.

I have a question for you. I planted ranunculus bulbs this year. Are those the type of bulbs that you have did up in fall?

Thank, Tina

Pretty flowers. I'll pass on the bees, though. Last time I was in the garden I was attempting (and failing) to get a vine to grow UP the little ladder looking thing I made and a wasp buzzed out of the cucumbers. I flipped and ran away.

Not too many things scare me. Centipedes, bees, wasps, and hornets top the list, though.

ughhhhhhhhh (shudder)

Yes they were pretty scary!

upnorth , yes raunculus ( also called wind flowers)
need to be dug up, its not so hard,....
here is another tip, you could just plant them in a pot, and then bring the pot in the bacement .... next year!!

we always have next year!! hee hee

I am STILL planting like crazy!!

I have 4 St. John's Wort bushes that have A LEAST, 70-80 big bumble bees like the ones above, on each bush. So far they haven't bothered us. The bushes a located around our patio, so when visitors come, over they really hesitate to sit out there. If anyone wants to plant perenials at a low cost, now's the time. We usually start buying them for no more than $3.00 a piece(even large shrubs). We get really great deals if we wait until the end of September @ Steins Garden Stores. We can get trees and 3 foot shrubs for only $1.00(with a 1 year warranty) and if it's not too cold we plant them or leave them in the buckets and plant them directly in our garden after it's done for the year. Works for us every time! Now is also a great time to plant seeds from your older perenials. By Spring time I have beautiful flowers starting and they grow continuously til the end of Summer.
HAPPY PLANTING!!!!!

Hi gardendesigner, this is off the topic, but I was wondering, I bought 2 hibiscus trees not noticing they are a zone 10. So I planted them in pots and they are beautiful. Can I bring them in for winter and put them back out in spring, will they bloom all winter?

Luv your flower and insect pics! A favorite photo subject of mine, too.

I'll have to stop by and visit your store.

Hello every one!
first off... yes you can certainly bring in your hibiscus trees indoors for the winter ... they will still need sunlight and water, and give them a good agressive pruning in feb/march. then a good feeding of fertilizer. Dont bring them out again untill it is 70 degrees at night. good luck ,
My granda ma has had one for 45 years! cool hey?

Thanks for the note tecant... thats quite a compliment from you!! Stop by on a sat morning, but beware I might have to show you 20,000 pictures of flowers! hee hee
