The latest school shooting was really close - Northern Illinois University in Dekalb, Illinois.  Nice, quiet Dekalb. 21 students shot, 6 students dead.  Their parents must be heartbroken, scared and angry.

Is anyone else afraid to let their kids go to college?  Anyone let their kids go to the mall anymore?  Out for a night with friends?  Do you worry about their safety?

What steps do you take to keep your kids safe?

I don't know about you guys, but I''m apprehensive these days.  Is our world getting so violent and scary that we all have to stay home?  Acquire our education on-line in the privacy of our own homes?  If we want to have some fun, are we going to have to invest in Wii for our living rooms?   II am concerned about workplace violence, too. Are we going to have to work from home so we can be safe?  Where do we draw the line?  ARE there any lines anymore??

These shooting are horrific and so tragic. I don't understand why the shooters have to take so many innocent people with them. If your going to kill yourself, so be it, but leave the innocent behind.

You have a good point. But similar shootings have happened at malls and even at the courthouse in that city in Missouri. There have been those kinds of shootings at workplaces also. my point is that it's not only colleges that are the target.

True, it isn't only colleges that are the target. My point exactly! You just don't know where the next shooting will be. Will you be there?

I don't want to play the devil's advocate, but these are isolated incidents that are happening more frequently in places they are not considered common. Because I have been exposed to "hoodlife" These shootings do not seem too intimidating to me and I don't feel that it should make people hide, but rather fight back... I say this because as I have stated there was a time when violence was so common that it did not phase me... Know I am not as exposed to it, but I do live and work in a community where violence is everyday and the possibility of being a victim is possible, but it will not keep me from doing what I have to do. I think my exposure has made me more award daily of my environment and I think that people need to not be paranoid, but aware and no how to react when situations go down like this. There has to be some common sense techniques that one can do when incidents like this happen like one "HIT THE FLOOR" two, "DON'T RUN, IF YOU DO, STAY LOW!" three, learn to speak, a simple "hi" might make a world of difference in somebody's day.

"The only thing to fear is fear itself". Colleges are safe, it is people who are dangerous. Hiding is not the solution, isolation is not the solution, it is the need of more mental health services and people paying attention to that need... Don't hide and don't feel that this is something that will happen regularly being scared will drive you crazy.

I agree with the previous poster, even though I don't have that much experience with "hoodlife" :)

These shootings suck, but after I pause for a minute, its time to move on. Stupid people do stupid things and that makes the news a few times a year.

True, you don't know where the next shooting will be. Will you be there? Probably not. If you are, well... not much you can do about it.

You can hide in your living room and dream about life or you can live it. There are more people killed in cars by accidents than by shootings. Are you going to keep your kids away from cars? You have two choices in life. Live it, or hide from it. I choose to live my life and will take whatever risks that incurs.

Personally, I favor the idea of concealed carry due to issues like this. A person that is trained on the use of their gun and knows how to use it gives one chance for a responce to a situation like this prior to the impact being as high as it has been.

I would like to be able to say that I am a suburban dweller working 40 hours a week with an SUV and 2.2 children and I have spare time in which I golf. However, none of that is true. I would just LIKE to say that. So I did.
