I have been watching the news and everyone seems to be reviewing the highlights of the news during 2007

.It is interesting to note that no one has mentioned the miners who were buried in Utah.

"The  miners were trapped on Aug. 6 in the Crandall Canyon Mine, and efforts to reach them came to a halt on Thursday, after the tunnel that rescuers were attempting to dig toward them caved in, killing three more men.

"I don't know whether the miners will be found," Murray said. "But I'm not optimistic."

A day earlier, relatives of the miners lashed out at officials and the mine's owners, faulting their rescue efforts as insufficient and asserting that that they were simply waiting for the six buried men to die."

So here is a toast to all the "little" people - the people we seldom hear about, the everyday workers who labor to make our lives easier.  The honest, hard-working people trying to raise their families as best they can and who represent what this country used to be all about.

Rest in peace.  We will remember.

Amen! I have to admit that I had forgotten that event. But my respect of coal miners remains. It is a dark, dirty, and dangerous job.

Dark As A Dungeon
Lyrics: Merle Travis
Music: Merle Travis

Come all you young fellows so young and so fine
And seek not your fortune in the dark dreary mine
It will form like a habit and seep in your soul
Till the stream of your blood runs as black as the coal

Chorus
Where it's dark as a dungeon and damp as the dew
Where the danger is doubled and the pleasures are few
Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines
It's dark as a dungeon way down in the mine

There's many a man I've seen in my day
Who lived just to labor his whole life away
Like a fiend with his dope and a drunkard his wine
A man will have lust for the lure of the mine

[chorus]

Oh when I am dead and the ages shall roll
My body will blacken and turn into coal
Then I'll look from the door of my heavenly home
And pity the miner a-digging my bones

[Chorus]

Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines
It's dark as a dungeon way down in the mine

Basher thanks for posting those lyrics, very powerful.

Makes me sad to think about the men that enter jobs like that because of their need for the money and not many other choices to support their families.

I've met a fair number of coal miners on my trips to Appalachia. Few of them retire healthy. Most go off on a disability--mostly their knees and backs give out. Sometiems those guys will work in a 30" (yes, inches) coal seam and spend their entire shift laying on their side. Not a one of the guys wants to see their kids go coal mining. And yet, where there is so little else for work, too many do.

The song "Dark As A Dungeon" by Merle Travis is available on iTunes. You can also find it on the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band CD "Will The Circle Be Unbroken".

I saw the story mentioned on one of the "year in review" type things.
They ended up giving up trying to find these miners, didn't they?

I guess the media had more important things to cover like Brittney Spears leaving the house w/o underwear or Lindsey Lohan entering rehab again!
TV truley has become an "idiot box" in the last decade.
I confess, I DO watch a lot of sporting events on TV and when I see comercials for upcoming programs I just sit there and shake my head saying to myself..."What kind of idiots watch this stuff?!?!?!?!?!"

I would like to be able to say that I am a suburban dweller working 40 hours a week with an SUV and 2.2 children and I have spare time in which I golf. However, none of that is true. I would just LIKE to say that. So I did.
