I just talked to a friend of mine this evening.

She recently had surgery that left her with a disability.  She has a blue and white handicap parking card in her car.  She had parked her car in a handicapped parking space at her apartment complex when she came home from work.

As she was leaving her apartment a little later, she found a threatening, hand-scrawled note under her door from the management of her complex threatening to tow her car if she parked in the handicapped designated spot again. (!!)

My question is this:  What is with the management of this complex?  Are they really as clueless as they seem?

Has anyone else had a problem like this?

How can we educate people so that this scenario does not happen again?

I had that same thing happen to me, except it wasn't the management it was someone else that lived in another apartment. At the time I didn't have the plates yet just the tag. There was 2 flights of stairs that I had to take to get into my apartment (which is the main reason that I moved from there) so I would park in the parking lot in the handicap spot so that I would only have to do 1 flight. Anyway one day I got a note under my wiper and it said "I think you need to stop using that tag and start parking somewhere else so someone else can use that spot. Also if your handicap then I'm a pro football player.". They never left a name or anything to it so I could confront them about it. Just because someone doesn't look a certain way doesn't mean that they are not. And then another one that threatened that they would report me and have my vehicle towed. I gave up and just parking in the garage and did the 2 flights.
I also get many dirty looks in store parking lots when I park in those spots because I don't look a certain way, so because of that I try to avoid those parking spaces unless I have too so I don't get glared at. Every time this has came from the older people.

This kind of ignorence doesn't surprise me. I have the same tags on my car and have gotten the same thing before. Fortunately, I have a good lawyer who knows how to 'educate' that kind of ignorance.

People are rude and inconsiderate to the disabled. Those who violate the rights of the disabled should be penalized severely. Perhaps this would inspire them to be a bit more respectful!

I would like to be able to say that I am a suburban dweller working 40 hours a week with an SUV and 2.2 children and I have spare time in which I golf. However, none of that is true. I would just LIKE to say that. So I did.
