HOW PEOPLE WEAR THEIR PANTS IS BECOMING A HEATED POLITICAL DEBATE IN ATLANTA.

LAST NIGHT HUNDRED PACKED A CITY COUNCIL MEETING TO SOUND OFF ON PLAN TO OUTLAW BAGGY PANTS.

THE PROPOSAL WOULD BAN PANTS THAT SHOW BOXER SHORTS OR THONGS. PEOPLE BUSTED WOULD BE FINED... BUT NOT JAILED.

SUPPORTERS SAY ITS MATTER OF PUBLIC DECENCY.

CRITICS SAY IT'S A NEW FORM OF RACIAL PROFILING THAT WOULD ALLOW POLICE TO TARGET YOUNG BLACK MALES WHO WEAR THEIR PANTS FAR BELOW THE BELTLINE.

A SIMILAR PROPOSAL IN STRATFORD, CONNECTICUT  WAS REJECTED THIS WEEK AFTER CRITICS CLAIMED IT WOULD BE UNCONSTITUTIONAL AND UNFAIRLY TARGET MINORITIES.

THE ATLANTA MEASURE WILL LIKELY FACE ANOTHER PUBLIC  HEARING BEFORE IT COMES TO A VOTE.

WHAT DO YOU THINK?  SOUND OFF AND BE HEARD.

I think it's a stupid look. I don't have a problem with it unless it's showing part or most of someones bum. That goes for women with thongs as well. Where was this law when plumbers where showing it off so much?
There's not many young black males in my area. There's plenty of young white males that sport this look. I usually make a joke about it to their face so they are embarrassed and pull them up. I think if they are showing the "crack" area of the bum, then it's indecent exposer and there's a law on that already. Perhaps it just needs amended?

I think that anyone who thinks that-that look is cool whether they are white black or purple I could carelees what color should be fined and the part of pants burned, and whether they be male or female does not matter either.that look should not be tolerated by anyone and we should not have to look at that either.

I absolutely HATE the baggy pants look, but I question how effectively this law would be enforced if it was passed. There are so many other issues that need our attention.

And I DO NOT think that this is a racial issue. I see just as many white, hispanic, and other races wearing the "baggy" look. EVERYTHING isn't a racial issue (and yes, this is a Black person saying this!!)

Believe it or not, the largest purchasers of hip hop music and fashion are LATINO kids (look it up, it's true). I'm just pointing that fact out because a lot of folks automatically think of young black males when the subject of baggy pants is brought up. If people just go by assumptions or "what they see on TV", they're not being realistic about this "image".

I think that the "baggy pants" look is either loved or hated by kids of ALL RACES. I also think that if parents put their foot down a little more with regards to acting and LOOKING respectful, the issue of making this a law wouldn't even BE an issue.

Sorry I couldn't resist the crack speckle one. I think it's offensive that anyone can walk around showing off the underwear. The school district where I live allows baggy pants as long as the underwear isn't showing.

I have no desire to see anyone's ass or their choice of undergarments. I've seen all types wearing this look and it doesn't do a thing for me or them contrary to what they may think. This is much like those young ladies who think it's OK to wear hip huggers and crop tops when they have fat rolls hanging all over. NOT ATTRACTIVE, NOT COOL, NOT anything positive.
Add a belt, buy a smaller size and stop walking like you have BLEEP in your pants like an infant with a full diaper.

Personal I feel it's disrespectful and there's really no reason for this style except for the fact that this is a part of the prison system. From what I've been told it's a label to let other inmates know who is taken as a mate and who’s not. So unless you are a part of that lifestyle you shouldn't wear you pants in this manner.

Whether you like the look or not don't we as a society have much larger fish to fry?

Let's tackle ridding the country of kiddi-diddlers, jailing congressmen playing hide the salami in public restrooms, and trying to get Ben Bailey above 0.200 on his weather predictions.

If we ban baggy pants where do we stop? No red shirts? No turquoise socks? When do we elect the Nazi's into power?

Race has absolutely nothing to due with it!!! I see a pretty even amount of people of several races, so that is not the issue. My question is--Why do they bother to wear a belt????

It's not a case of racial profiling. It's indecent exposure. I think more states ought to follow suit and make it a law that anyone caught wearing pants that show underwear or thongs should face a fine or jail time. If I saw someone wearing that at a job, I'd send that person home to change or they can take day off. What kind of statement are these people making when they wear baggy pants? That's something I want to know.

You guys are making good points...I just thought of one more thing:

I wish we could round up all of the guys who wear the baggy pants and tell them emphatically that GIRLS do NOT find this look attractive!! So if they're dressing "baggy" because girls find it attractive, they are sadly mistaken. I have NEVER found this attractive, and neither does ANY female that I know! I even heard this topic discussed on the radio one time, and EVERY female that called in said they thought it was ridiculous!

And LADIES...any guy who is attracted to you simply because you're showing your THONG is NOT the type of guy you need to be bothered with in the first place!!!

Wake up, smell the coffee, and PULL UP YOUR PANTS!

I just saw that on television the other night and I thought to myself, "It's about time". I myself, as a parent, wouldn't allow my sons to show half their butts because I thought it was disgusting, anymore then I would have allowed my daughters to walk around with half their bras in full view. That's not to say they didn't do it once they left the house - but they were definately aware I didn't like it.

This isn't racial profiling - it's just another excuse for certain types of people to wine and use the discrimination clause in order to be able to do what they want. I don't want to see another person's underwear and I can't understand why anyone would want to expose it to the world. Do these young girls have any idea what those thongs straps look like sticking out of their pants? I'll tell you - the first think I think of is a Kotex belt - of course they're much to young to remember what THOSE are. If a person wants to stand out in a crowd, then have them do it by portraying themselves in a more positive, productive way. Even with school dress codes in force, you still have kids violating them on a daily basis and their parents complaining that their kids should be able to dress as they please. School isn't a fashion show - it's a place one goes to for education. How can kid's pay attention in class when they're constantly trying to keep up with today's disgusting fashion trends?

It amazes me to hear parents of these kids say, "it's not right to tell my child what he or she can wear" - don't they realize how it makes them look as parents? If these parents are so int

If the kids knew where this idea of wearing loose pants slung low around your waist showing your underwear comes from they might stop it.
The whole thing came from the prisons. Before the fad hit the streets in the 80's the only people wearing their pants like this lived in prisons. The meaning was that you were for sale to the highest bidder, if you know what I mean. the prison pimp would would parade the punk around the prison wearing his pants in this fashion, when someone wanted to use or buy a punk they would know who was on the market. That also had a beginning because in prison they take your belt so you cannot hang yourself or use it as a weapon, hence the baggy pants.
