Governer Doyle sure knows how to make enemies.  Do you know what a ban on smoking in bars would do to these establshments?  What is Doyle thinking?  If you don't like smoking, stay out of the bars or better yet, have someone open a non-smoking only bar for these people.  I don't mind the restaurants and work places, but come on.  People look forward to weekends and going out an relaxing and having a couple drinks and yes, smoking if they please.  What a crock.  Doyle, worry about something else like the gas gouging that is going on.  Or the repeat drunk drivers who have been arrested 8 times and are still on the road.  Get off the smoking kick.  If people want to smoke, they should be able to.  In bars especially.

Fully agree with everything you said. I actually wrote him a letter telling him how his logic that it keeps teens from smoking doesn't make sense since teens aren't even allowed in bars. He wrote me back a very polite letter that basically told me "TOO BAD" and your vote means nothing to me. Didn't even say your opinion is important, nothing. Just reiterated his stupid plan to persecute those who choose to use legal substances and should have a right to do so. I am with you that I have no problems with Restaurants and other establishments but bars? Give me a break. Also, I do think it should be the choice of every establishment owner. There will be several that would go non-smoking that way everyone could choose where to go themselves.

I agree with both of you. Forget writing Doyle, write your legislatures, Reps and Senators. Click on this link and type in your address to find your represenatatives. http://waml.legis.state.wi.us/
Everyone needs to write and voice opinion.

There are democratic ways to deal with this. In Waukesha The House of Guiness posted a sign that offered a Smoke Free Saturday night with live music. What a democratic idea, imagine that in a Democracy, Capitalist Country!
Doyles idea is Facist and wrong for freedoms and business.
The Wi Tavern League and the Restaurant league should have joined forces to fight this. Instead they sold each other down the river. Is someone is getting paid off here?

Another thing, I wonder why the Media has not reported any of the opposing view to these bans. The conclusions published in every second hand smoke study I have read are always inconclusive. Yet all they report is the opposite. Bars in states that have bans have lost up to 40% of business or closed, yet they choose to report the opposite.
This is a "politically correct" inspired issue that only serves to put up a smoke screen to more pressing issues, like gas prices, illegal immigrants, taxes etc.
I could go on and on!

Ahh, Doyle doesn't care if he loses the Tavern League and figures the smokers will die before he ever gets out of office (cuz of all the liberals who continue to vote for his sorry butt.) He has the Big Casino money. Also look at what Doyle is planning to tax. Everything that is free will;smokes, soda, marriage licenses and on and on to the tune of 2 BILLION. WHile we are helping people buy homes with tax dollars- Doyle will tax them out of their homes along with the elderly. The taxes in Milwaukee will be so high, only the drug dealing thugs will be able to afford to live here. Just wait until you see what he taxes next- food that makes you fat, fast food, candy, there's no end to how he is going to rape the tax payers. Smokers? They don't even hit his radar. But think of his ad campaign- "SMOKE! IT'S FOR THE CHILDREN!"

abeths - I have written to the others and received no responses back. Agreed, why is are the businessess not fighting this. I know there were two restaurants in Wauwatosa that did and received a "temporary" exemption because it was not "State" law and just a "City" law. I would imagine, knowing the decline and collapse of business across the country where the bans were implemented, that they would be fighting tooth and nail if they wanted a choice. Maybe they don't realize how much business they will indeed actually lose - most smoker's I know refuse to go to a restaurant if it's no smoking out of protest. And that's just food, not drinking. Some bars should be very concerned - Who are the people staying all night and paying bigger bills? Usualy the smokers. The media? They are typically always more in support of liberal governments. OR maybe the non-smoking lobby has the best "kick backs".

If we can impeach a president, isn't there something we can do to Doyle? He's a lousy governer and has no intention of helping the citizens. You're right too! Taxes will probably drive a lot of people out of their homes. Thanks for nothing Doyle. I'll bet the people who voted for him are re-thinking that choice. Go ahead and kick yourselves. It's ok.

I think the thing to do here is talk to the owners of the bars/restaurants we all go to and ask them what they're doing. They should be putting out Petitions for smokers to sign and turning them into their respected Leagues. I talked to one bar owner and he acted like he didn't know what to do about it, like it is just his destiny or something.

Keep writing your Reps on this, hound them if you have to and get your friend to do it too. Just because they are not responding does not mean they are not listening. Call them up if you have to.

We all need to remember here, that Government is supposed to be for the people by the people. The people did not ask for this, the Anti-Smokers groups who are funded by Federal/State tax dollars (OUR MONEY) are the ones who are pushing for it.
This is NOT a grassroots effert. Call your Reps and remind them that they were elected by you and that you pay their salary!
Make them listen.

good blog abeths. Thanks for the info. Come on everyone. If you don't agree with it, go to the website abeths provided and lets get something done about it. There are just as many smokers and non-smokers. If we don't speak up, they won't hear our side.

I love to Golf (not very good, but working on it). I love animals. I have cats, a bird and a dog. I'm 40ish, but look 28 (ha ha). I love thrift stores and can spend 2 hours in a grocery store. Most people don't like to grocery shop, but I use coupons and check the isles for all the good deals.
