I made this as a comment in one of the blogs. My wife asked me if Harley riders have designated drivers for when they had too much to drink and don't want to drive. I thought that it might make for an interesting discussion. So, I'll break it out into a separate blog entry.
With all of the parties and concerts and such, what do Harley riders do for a designated driver? Drivers of cars and pick-up trucks are always warned to have a designated driver if you are going to be drinking. How do Harley riders do that?

i am greatful that charter reached a deal with the big ten network! finally i can watch the badger games from home! for us cable subscribers to charter, the new channel is on channel 73, and on hd it is on 795.
after this season of football and basketball, they are going to reevaluate and decide where to pace the channel. why not leave it on the expanded basic cable package? if they reevaluate, they may put the big ten network in the digital sports viewing tier. if they do that, it will make me mad and so will you.
i want to hear from you bloggers who have charter communications in there area. if they put it in the digital sports viewing tier, would you be mad if you do not have that package?

Here we go again!
September second is the first day most kids will be going back to school.
Earlier blogs have mentioned that we should be looking at how history is taught in our schools. In fact, there is a controversy going on right now in the Milwaukee Public Schools about a series of textbooks the district wanted to buy, but has not, because of objections from some teachers and community members.
Stay tuned for my reports on that.
Anyway, who has an idea on how the most historic presidential election the United States has had in it's almost 300 years, should be taught?
It's not in textbooks yet, and since they only buy new ones every 7 years, the first term of whoever wins in November will be over before new books are written.
Should kids be encouraged/required to watch the candidates on TV? Should they write reports on the debates? Should teachers hold discussions in class on the candidates and their platforms?
No matter who you support, we are watching history in the making in 2008!
And, as I often say in my speeches about my business: News is history in the making, get it right!

So you don't ride a Harley? Never heard of a Fat Boy? Couldn't care less who Willie G is? No worries. This may not be your party. But, you're invited anyway. I'm telling you, it's worth your time to say hello to our guests from around the globe.
In the mad sea of chrome, leather, do-rags and tattoos around Milwaukee this weekend, are some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. They're disarming. Easy to talk to. And they want to tell you all about themselves.
Last night at the HOG 25th anniversary party, my wife and I met an insurance broker from California who bought his first motorcycle - a HOG, of course - at age 65. He's 66 this year and on his first ever cross-country tour.
We met a former semi-pro hockey player from British Columbia. He could've bragged about his Soft Tail, but instead he told us about the 3-year-old daughter and infant son he left back home. Turns out, he played high school hockey with a former St. Louis Blues star named Tony Twist, a man who was practically a cult hero when I was growing up in suburban St. Louis. Small world.
We met person after person gushing with stories about the glory of the open road and why it's great to be a part of the Harley family. Good people, indeed.

I confess - I'm not a member of the Harley Owners Group. But, a friend who is graciously brought me along to the HOG's 25th anniversary party at Miller Park Thursday night to see Kid Rock in concert.
I've always heard Kid Rock puts on a good show, and let me say he (and his band) did not disappoint! He knows how to work a crowd into a frenzy, put on the brakes, and pump it right back up again. The band was sharp, mistake free, and energetic.
More than anything, Kid Rock's versatility blew me away -- southern rock, hip hop, country, heavy metal, classic rock, rhythm and blues - you name it, he played it. He even mixed in a fair amount of humor. The man can sing. And he knows how to put on a show.
I never would've pegged a Harley crowd as a fit for a young street-rapper from Detroit Rock City. But, this isn't the Kid Rock who busted onto the scene a decade or more ago. He's a well-rounded musician and entertainer. This guy is the real deal. He even won over the harshest critic of all - my wife, who never stopped dancing.

Brand New Harley
You might think I’m a banker, and on weekdays, it’s true
But underneath this poly-cotton blend is a skeleton tattoo
Which I got when I was drinking
And I’m showing off this weekend
On my brand new Harley-Davidson
I may work in an office and look respectable and clean
But you should see me dressed in leather on my American machine
You would swear that I’m blue-collar
On my 15-thousand dollar
Deluxe, brand new Harley-Davidson
Come Friday evening
I don’t shower, I don’t shave
And I put my little earring in
And it’s time to misbehave
Yes I will clean your teeth on Monday
Or put braces in your mouth
But don’t flash ‘em at me Sunday, boy
Or I just might knock them out
My psychologist, he told me that it’s important that I ride
So I recreate my warrior who is pent up nine to five
And it’s therapy for hours
On my fifteen-thousand dollar
Deluxe, brand new Harley-Davidson
I kick off my loafers
Put on my big black boots
And I swear and curse while I rehearse for
My nasty attitude
Yes I will do your taxes Tuesday
So you get some money back
But call me CPA on Saturday
And I’ll have to kick your ass
No I’m not in a costume, I’ll bet a junk bond I’m real
I am an archetypal man astride a stallion made of steel
I’m a rebel, I’m a gangster
I’m a whiskey-drinking prankster
On my brand new Harley-Davidson

Why don't you guys cover a "sober" (no alcohol allowed) gathering of Harley riders?
So far it seems that all Harley riders do is drink and hold concerts.

Hmmm........I must say i have to agree w/ you too, 100%
This is good for the city, Millions pumping into our local economy.
.......and these bikes are pretty stunning at night w/ lights all over them, (awesome)
[On the other hand]......"I have seen Harley Riders who just don't know the area too well. Understandable. Be doubly aware of your surroundings on the roads. Furthermore, some bikers signal to get off the highway......then suddenly swerve back in the slow lane.
MOST BIKERS ARE RESPONSIBLE RIDERS & SAFE RIDERS.
just like most auto drivers are responsible.
It's bad at night too.........for instance..... on the interstate, when i see obviously inebriated, confused Harley-Riders just plain intoxicated.
Not a Traffic Cop in sight, ........the contradictions of LIFE.....always amuses me.
Oh Well......since this is a speeding-ticket grace period for ALL bikers....that means less tickets for US "metal box riders" too. I hope.
Still....this is just plain spectacular to see so many bikes, Hail to the sophisticated IRON HORSES.....run free! run free!
Be Safe!!!!!.......Please!

Obviously everyone knows that Milwaukee is now infested with bikers. I thank all of these people for contributing their hard earned cash to our local economy.
I live downtown, and when I go to Pick N Save I usually take Juneau east to with Milwaukee or Jefferson. So last night I drove through the intersection of Water & Juneau. If you don't know this is the heart of the Water St. bar area. If you watch FOX 6 news you would know that the city has converted most of its downtown parking to motorcycles only. As I drove through this area 99% of the parking spots are taken. Water St. was packed with motorcycles. If the Harley tourists are packing the bars on Water St., who are the Designated Driver's. Who are driving these metal torpedoes back to Milwaukee hotels after bar time?
It's pretty frustrating to see every Harley event in the area feature tons and tons of beer, and encourages people to come out and drink. It just doesn't make sense, when most people are riding their bikes.
So I wonder, is local law enforcement giving these riders a free pass on drunk driving? I know it sounds crazy, but I've heard almost nothing about the "security measures taken by police to enforce the law". Just about every Saturday I've gone to Water St. there were police on horse back or just plain camped out policing the area. Last night, not a cop in sight.
If police issue less than 200 DUI tickets, somebody was asleep on the job OR police are trying not to rain on everyone's parade.
I don't know how else I can explain how easy it should be for cops to catch drunk drivers.
A fatal DUI motorcycle crash would definitely stain Harley's 105th celebration.

So as we know, the drivers at waste managment are on strike...Why???
They are on strike because they think they're pention plan isn't fat enough, when are ungreatful American workers gonna get a clue?
What happened to the days that we were happy to be working and have a job with good pay, good benifits and that is stable?? Don't people see what happened to all the union manufacturing jobs over the years and now the Auto workers Union because they keep pushing for more and more and more and than when the economy hits a slow down it all comes crashing down and they're jobs get eliminated??
Pention, what is that??....I don't even have health insurance but you don't see me trying to force someone to give it to me or pay me when I don't work for them anymore for that matter!!
Oh and than the ignorant bunch stands in front of the entrances to the land fills and cause traffic back ups on the streets so it causes problems for me to do my job!
Any other thoughts on the subject??? Anyone else see a problem with the mob invented Union tactics????

Don't be alarmed! It'll just be me...my 3 youngest are going back to school tomorrow. At 7:20 am (PROMPTLY), I will be dropping the little darlings off at their school. I will stand there by my car, waving, with tears of joy streaming down my face. At 7:25am, the bell rings and I will hop in my car, put the top down, crank up some Big & Rich and let out a yell that'll be heard for miles around!
Don't get me wrong now, I love the little angels...but Lord have mercy on a poor mom that has had all 8 of them, 2 grandkids, 1 grandchild due next month, 3 big dogs, 2 turtles and a husband under foot all Summer long!
All school year (last year), I had to fight with them to get up for school. Granted, it's hard waking up at 5am (no matter how young or old you might be), but out here, school starts promptly at 7:25 am. I have a half hour drive into town to take them to school. But miraculously...come Summer, those little buggers are up at 5am with no prompting. Not only that, but they were asking me at 6am if they could go out and play! I was like "No sir! I am not turning y'all lose in the yard at this hour! My neighbors would take up a petition to have y'all muzzled and leashed by noon!" Crazy, I'll tell you!
All Summer long I heard "Ma, I'm bored. Can we go shopping? Or can we spend a couple nights at a hotel so we can go swimming?" Lord! When I was a kid, I was happy to just go out and play. Not kids these days. They want to be busy spending money or being entertained. Heck, I didn't stay in a hotel until I was married and had 4 kids.
I can't complain about their choice of music, since all 8 listen to the same stuff that I do (Country!). I also can't complain about too much of anything else about them. It just that they were ALL here ALL Summer long, wanting to go everywhere and do SOMETHING right that second.
My baby is starting first grade this year. Daddy is very proud of her. I just sit back and giggle because she is so much like I was at that age. She doesn't like school, she wants to stay home and run barefoot around the property, catching frogs and caterpillars and bugs. She's such a tomboy that it's scary! She doesn't take any smack from the older ones. She stands her ground. If one of them picks on her or messes with her, she can really cut loose!
My next oldest is starting 4th grade. He's smart as a whip. He skipped 2nd grade because of an I.Q. test. He's the one that has wanted to be a Priest since he was 3. He got to meet his teacher lastnight...she's really awesome.
Then my next one is going into 6th grade. He's my "Mr. Cool". He's too cool to wear this or that, too cool to get wet in a water fight...just TOO cool.
All three of them go to a Catholic grade school out here.
Then there's my (almost 15 year old) daughter...she starts at the high school this year. That girl holds the world's record for time spent in the bathroom. She's always "flat-ironing my hair!" or whitening her teeth. I just started teaching her how to drive last week and now, that's all I seem to be doing. She keeps dragging me (screaming and kicking) out to the car.
The other four kids are all over 18 and out of school. They work for me in my glass block company. One is starting up his own glass block company and another is opening his own replacement window company.
These and SO many other reasons are why I will be whooping it up come 7:20 am tomorrow! Mama is going to come home and enjoy having the house to herself. Of course, I may have to scream periodically...just to see if I have gone deaf!
Have a wonderful Thursday y'all! I know I will!

Then they went back to Karen and asked her about the second female. Now Karen, the women from the free thinking party, instead of saying something to the fact of, "well, if she feels Barracks speech's do not move her, then it is her right to vote for who she likes", no instead, Karen the free thinking person said, "is she crazy, it's like making a complete turn around". Karen, your parties motto should be, "FREE THINKING AND INDIVIDUALITY IS FINE, AS LONG AS WE ALL THINK, AND DO THE SAME THING".

Preface: For the blogs on "My Take", I'm going to try Triple Takes. I don't know if I'll continue to do this, but in retrospect, I'll give it a try.
First Take: The DNC. Yes, I've been watching the Democratic National
Convention. Really I'm paying attention to it. And yes, I did see the speech that Michelle
Obama gave about her husband. Now I realized, that this was her speech
she gave to a national audience about the side of Sen. Barack Obama
that we never knew. I didn't get the gist of momentum, but to me, and I
did say (to me) maybe this was a platform for her just to present
herself more. I'm just saying. Cut her some slack. At least she tried.
Overall, the tone was positive and I don't have a complaint about the
factor between now and November 4th. It even made Fox News Analyst Juan
Williams cry. Secondly, I think Hilliary's speech on Tuesday stood a
tone that some of her fans or supporters really need to hear. I said
this on MySpace, and I'm going to say it here, in a clean way: Move On!
Like most of us need to "move on" past the Sen.Obama/Rev. Jeremiah
Wright angle. In the words of Tavis Smiley, "many Americans don't
understand, that he's standing in a Keynesian tradition". Review the
footage from Real Time with Bill Maher for that one. The footage that had Tavis Smiley referring about patriotism, Frederick Douglass, and mentioning Martin Luther King's view of the Vietnam War.
If you are a true
Democrat, man up with your party! And I mean "man up"! OK, I know that
she and Barack had the heat neck and neck, and I must say the
Democratic Side of the race was very interesting between the two. But
the question is now, who's name is on the ballot on the Democratic side?
And who won the most delegate votes? To quote the rap group Tag Team
from 1993: "Whoomp! There It Is." All I'm saying is: just "man up with
the party" with a purpose of having an opportunity to maintain your
vote, and progress for change. Just to comment, Hilliary's speech was
fair and balanced in a good way. And meaningful! As far as Bill Clinton's speech from Wednesday night, enough said. You can call it whatever, but during a week like this, it's history in the making, as reflecting on the 45th Anniversary of the March of Washington, and MLK's "I Have A Dream" speech. Plus the 88th Anniversary of the Women's Right to Vote.
Second Take: The MPS Empty Class Factor. Let me be brief on this one.
I know that MPS begins on September 2nd, and the kids are prepared to
go back, from what I've heard. But the take on this one refers to the
NSI schools that were recently built with new classrooms, labs, gyms
and no one is using them. What's up with that? You got all these empty
classrooms, computer labs, and recreational areas, and no one is
telling them about it? What a way to waste time with dollars and cents.
What's going to happen to those classrooms? Lord only knows. But since
this is out, my suggestion would be use the classrooms for extra space
to accommodate for students who couldn't fit in other schools. Now I'm
assuming that there may be need for more teachers. Put them over there!
Security, Engineers, etc, same thing. I mean do something with the
classrooms and schools that will not be a "lost cause". Maybe turn them
into boot camps or detention centers! I know wishful thinking. My
mother brought this up, and by the way, she is a
part-time educator for an MPS Charter School (although she's retired supposedly!) She
brought up not only the empty unused NSI schools like Clarke, but also
some the schools that are closed. For example, my old elementary
school, 38th Street School is closed, and my old Middle School, Jackie
Robinson are closed as well. Both schools are unused, and the only thing
that is keeping them going is electricity, boilers and generators. Plus, according
to her, the more the boilers and electricity flows, it effects taxpayers money. Strange
but true. To clarify, read the JS Watchdog Section of the MPS NSI
Construction classroom results. You might be shocked and not pleased of
the reports. For the other reasons, since the classrooms are empty and
no one is using them, where are all the children/teens have gone? Maybe
MPS should reinstate the old plans that was used years ago in terms of
the schools being on top of their game. Just my opinion.

Third take: Harleys. Yes, H-D is turning 105. Can't we please be on our best behavior about this one? I had to sneak that in there, I'm sorry! I don't have a problem of V Twin Engines revving up, and going full burn on a blacktop. Now for the record, I've read some reports about bikers being bad in all. There are some good bikers, who do positive work in the community, like church! You probably don't hardly see them or mention them, but they do some good work. I've met some, a couple years back, around the 100th. I'm familiar about Harley-Davidson's charitable causes with the MDA, which is cool, of giving back to the community. What about the Patriot Guard Riders? Those who go out and pay respect to those that died in uniform. And which group of riders mostly attend? Harleys. Oh check this: What about the Throttle Twisters? They are one of the oldest Motorcycle Clubs in Milwaukee. And one of the black owned also. Check them out on Myspace. They too, provide positive work in the community as well.
Yes, it's all about a motorcycle. But it's more than that. It's about a motorcycle that been around for over 100 years and making an impact. Which is it still an impact today. It's every 5 years, that Milwaukee receives this celebration. I mean that is something, at least the city can be proud of, that this machine was born here! I mean, MillerCoors is leaving for Chicago, why not get behind Harley? What all this means is, I think the citizens need to relax. Law enforcement is probably out and checking to see if there is no trouble. Let the Harley Fans, the city, and the company have the celebration for one weekend. Without the grace of God, there would not be an Anniversary of any kind coming from Harley-Davidson! That's right Harley enthusiasts, I said it! Need to thank the good Lord above. And when September 1st comes, and after Labor Day, it will be back to normal with our jobs, families, MPS' first day of school, the Fall Election, and Football of College, High School, and the NFL.
This is my Triple Take. Right or Wrong. Just my Thought.

I am not sure how or where to begin. Well...this story is about my Dad (The Gear-Jammer). Ever since my Father was a young boy, he dreamed of becoming a semi truck driver. He was able to drive a truck in the service, & followed his dream & became a semi driver. As i grew up, i remember going every year to see him perform in the annual truck rodeos. Over the years he had obtained much respect for being a safe & devoted truck driver, he had received many awards, allong with his pins & patches... he was also a member of the Teamsters Union, he wore his Teamsters Union patches along with all the others on his jackets & hats with pride. He allways would say how good the Teamsters Union was, & how they supported the honest hard workin truck drivin man. He amazed me with his loyalty not only to his work & teamsters union, but especially to his family!!! And allways spending any spare time he had left to helping others in any way he could. My Father retired in "2000". He looked forward to spending more time with his family. As the years of his retirement went by, my dad started to feel ill in "2006". He would say how run down he felt, & that he just could'nt catch his breath as he used to. He put it off, relating to it as getting older symtoms, or thinking that he would get better. By the end of that year he was helping out my grandma, when he passed out & later was hospitalized & put on oxygen. The following months to come was heart breaking for me. As i helped out as much as i could, i watch my fathers breath slowly being robbed from him. Allthough, i reacted strongly, i would go home and just cry silent tears of greivng pain. On Easter of "2007" i went to see my dad. I had brought him a chocolate frosty...it was his favorite! My dad wanted his toe nails cut, he said no one would do it because no one was certified. So i cut my dads toe nails, then washed & massaged his feet, & put lotion on them, for they were so dry! I did not really realize...that i was spending my last Easter with my dad. On April 15, 2007, my dad passed away. My mom & dad were married 47 years! After my dad passed, my mom found out that she would no longer be receiving my dads pension. This was a shock to all of us! We thought how could this be? There must be some mistake! Well, the teamsters union informed my mom that they had signed off on the pension when my dad retired in "2000"!? What happened was, when my mom & dad signed the paper work, the lady that represented the teamsters union retirement pension, was talking about insurance. She informed them that the insurance that they provide would be very costly for them, & that signing this form you will not have that extra coverage. My parents agreed, & said that they would look into getting there own insurance. The lady then quickly handed them the paper work to sign, my parents signed & the lady, quickly as she handed it to them, took it back! My mom has been before the Teamsters Union Board, & they have denied her, stateing that the paper they signed was noterized & there is nothing they can do. My mom has tried to appeal this decision, to no avail. My mom has no money for an attourney to fight this battle. She is considered poverty leval, she does not get enough from S.S. for her to survive. How can the teamsters union be so cold & so heartless!!! They may as well have spit on my fathers grave, & spit in my mothers face as-well!!! To have misrepresented the documentation & mislead them to sign such an important form. My dad gave his life...HIS LIFE to the teamsters union in whom he was so dedicated & loyal to...to the very end! And the teamsters turn around & stab my family in the back!!! It has not only hurt my mother but myself as-well. Seeing her go through her greeve after loosing my dad, being married 47 years, & then have the union rape my mother of her dignity...she has not been the same ever since...shame on you teamsters union!!! You have dishonored & discredited onee of your finest membors & have disgraced his Family!!!!

On August 16th 70,000 Christian kids gathered on The Mall in Washington DC for a day of worship, fasting and prayer for our country. It was The Call and similar events are going to be held around the world.
This is what the event is all about: TheCall is a divinely initiated, multi-racial, multi-generational, and cross-denominational gathering to corporate prayer and fasting. We believe that our nation is in desperate need of the mercy of God and a great Spiritual Awakening. TheCall is committed to mobilizing people from all across America to gather together to petition God for His undeserved mercy for our nation in 12-hour solemn assemblies. Just as in the days of Joel, we believe that now is the time to blow the trumpet across our land, to fast, to pray, and return to the Lord with all our hearts.
For whatever reason that apparently does not jive with a media template of what kids should be doing. In 2000 The Call gathered 400,000 kids on The Mall. There was no news media coverage, or at least none that broke nationally. IIRC, one AP reporter wrote a brief dispatch about the event. When I inquired of a local newspaper editor why that was, he told me flat out that if the kids had been protesting or rioting against the government there would have been lots of coverage. But teenagers praying and fasting, even if there is 400,000 of them, that is simply "too nice an event to cover." Besides, he said, no local kids were involved. Baloney, I told him. My church had sent like 7 busloads of kids and there were other churches from the metro area as well. He muttered something about there being a weekend and no one to cover it.
This year, about 35 people from my church and perhaps an equal number of other churches went to DC for The Call. I know that they didn't try to get any media coverage. I know the reasoning: The local news media wouldn't cover it anyway. So, trying to get them interested is a wasted effort. That goes for Fox 6, too. A motorcycle rally and it associated boozy events warrents more coverage than a gathering of Christians on The Mall. (Note: the Christian Motorcycle Association is going to be at the Harley events. Don't bet on there being any coverage of them. Too many boozy parties to cover.) In fact, based upon the past experience with the local news media, I guess that my church was making the correct assumption. Oshkosh, Wisconsin is the site of Lifest, one of the largest, most successful Christian music festivals in the nation. It draws 18,000 people a day to listen to a wide variety of music by international Christian music stars. I know for a fact that the each year the event organizers beat themselves silly trying to get news media, particularly the Milwaukee news media, coverage of the event. Yet the only time that it has drawn media coverage in Milwaukee outside of a story buried inside the Metro section of the Journal Sentinel was when a young lady was tragically killed on one of the rides. But you get 25 kids protesting the police arresting one of their friends and there is coverage galore for day upon day. Frankly, I don't get it and probably never will. That is probably why I'm no longer in the news biz.
No, I just don't get it. I don't get why the media covers college-aged anarchists rioting at the DNC in Denver but doesn't cover many times more people,multi-generational at that, who gather to pray and fast for our country. Back in 2000 some time after The Call there was a gathering of about 10,000 homosexual activists in Washington DC. The media covered that like a blanket. At several of the early Promise Keepers conferences where there were 50,000 to 90,000 men in the stadium worshipping the Lord and dedicating themselves to be godly men, the news media was fixated on the 20 or so feminist protestors outside. I recall a friend of mine telling me how one paper's coverage of a PK event contained more about the protestors than it did about the men attending the PK conference.
Recently Tom Heinen, the Journal Sentinel's religion reporter, accepted the paper's offer of a buy-out. He's gone, seeking work elsewhere. You'd think that some news outfit (attention Fox6!!!) would take on the task of having a reporter on the religion beat. But then again, that would probably be a wasted effort since it would involve events that are "too nice to cover".

I've got a living to make. Let me know when all of this flapdoodle is over. I'm tuning it out.
