Senator Jesse Helms died on July 4th.  He served five terms as a Senator from North Carolina.  He was UNQUESTIONIABLY onE of the most controversial, outspoken politicians of the 21st century.

I never lived in NC, or even in the SE whil he served and at the time, I really didn't follow politics.  The only time I saw him in the news, he always seemed to be villified.

I found an article by David Broder of the NY Times written in 2001 calling him a White Racist.  Maybe he was a racist, maybe he wasn't.   I don't now what was in his heart.  A lifelong Southerner, he certainly had the reputation of being racist and in my brief research into him, he certainly played racial politics.

Nonetheless, at the very least, I thank him for his years of public service and and may he rest in peace.  Heck, he and George Carlin may be yucking it up as you read this blog.

Public service?

Over the course of his long Senate career, Jesse Helms repeatedly blocked significant legislation and failed to pass any meaningful bills of his own.

He was an unrepentant bigot who not only lobbied against civil rights, but went out of his way to offend and belittle African-Americans.

He opposed gay rights, foreign aid and AIDS research while supporting Pinochet and the Salvadorian death squads.

And for that you thank him?

It seems to me that "things" were much more under control when we had bigots and white racists in control. I don't know if he offended and belittle Afican Americans as much as he realized that certain people do not have the necessary controls to regulate themselves and to act properly and productively within our society. It seems to me that things were much smoother in the early 1950's.

Sometimes we need to pay attention to our elders. They have lived longer than the rest of us and they are pragmatically wise where we may not be.

He and Carlin???
I seriously doubt that.
Jerry Falwell and Strom Thurmond may be waiting for him, but Carlin?

Maybe if you were white things seemed much better. I can not believe you typed that. Are you saying blacks can not regulate themselves and act properly?

By the way, if and when Senator Ted Kennedy, Senator Byrd, or any other long time Liberal passes on. I will echo the same sentiments.

And yeah, he and Carlin, they certainly disagreed alot more on issues in this realm than the agreed........but wouldn't that conversation be fun to listen to??

And destertwindrider.......you may want to consider rethinking your previous post. It certainly seems quite insulting to African Americans.

Dose, it would be funny to listen to Carlin's rant and watch Helms back down.
Either way, I will not make fun of someone who is dead. He was an old man set in his old ways.
May he rest in peace.

Avid exerciser. Recovering Liberal as I came to see how liberal economic thought ignored basic economic principles such as the laws of supply and demand and embraced the philosophy of moral relativism. I am an American, dad, and husband with the notion of being a "global citizen" somewhere further down the "what am I" list. Although admittedly not a very good multi-tasker, I have two fitness related jobs and one full time job: being Dad to an 9 and 3 year old.
