Listening to the news on the radio the other day, I heard that a barrel of oil rose to an all time record high of $117.00.  I have also noticed and felt the effect of that change when visiting the gas pumps myself.  I have to drive over 55 miles a day for work so I understand the cost of what's involved.  More and more of my paycheck is going towards the cost of transportation.  Not to mention, I have two teenage boys (16 and 18) that require additional mileage and additional gas.

So I got to thinking.  What is the real reason as to why the oil companies are reporting such huge profits and we are stressing for every gallon we are pumping?  There is something that I really do not understand here.  Why isn't our government getting involved to control and regulate the unbelievable gouging that is being done to the average American?  Instead, our President, (who comes from an Oil Family), diverts the issue into what the environmentalists love, safer and cleaner automobiles.   I manage a gas station and I listen to complaints, day after day after day.  As if I were controlling the current cost of each barrel.

We need our chain of command to listen and act now.  Starting with our County Executive, our  Mayor, our Legislature and finishing with our Congressmen and Senators.  Someone has got to stand up and say enough.  I was forced to quit smoking because of the price.  I didn't want to quit and I don't want to hear people saying that I am better off now health wise.  That doesn't change the fact that I had more likelihood to be killed by a drunk driver then to die by smoking.  But that is not what this is about.  If you believe in God, and you believe that he created all, then Oil must have been on his mind when he decided to give us the engine idea, right?  So why do we now want to stop using that most important treasure of the center of our earth?

Lower the prices already.

here is another thing that is really going up. i heard from someone that a barrel of fuel went up to $117.00. i agree with you. we need to do some complaining to our politicians and get something done about the rising costs of gas and fuel. great job on the posting of this blog.

I totally agree on a couple of your points. Gas prices keep climbing because we as consumers are willing to keep paying for it. We buy the gas-guzzling.. big engine powerful fast cars... varooom varooom. And now the "best" the car manufacturers can do is maybe a 25-30 mile per gallon car?? SHEEEESH Back in the 80's, there were plenty of vehicles that easily got 30, 40 and even 45 mpg. Mind You--- i love my cars. My hubby and I enjoy our Charger with a 440 in it. Most likely will be keeping it in storage this year because of the gas prices.
My gut tells me that the politicians aren't going to do anything about it, I mean... let's blame Bush for the oil price woes. Gotta keep the focus off the fact that the DEM CONTROLLED LEGISLATION that begged to be voted in.... won control.... and promised to make life better, hasn't done anything to get us away from foreign oil dependancy. OHHHH but now let's add corn to the mix. Driving up food prices, so we can drive our gas guzzlers down the road. Hopefully I can qualify for Badger Care, Badger Foods, Badger Transport, Badger Housing and *gosh* it is great to live in WI.

not sure i want our Congressmen and Senators talking to the oil exec. any more everytime they do the gas pumps go up 60 cents over the following two weeks. everytime there a reason this broke that got disrupted, well they get fixed don't they? when does it go down cause the value is fixed. it looks like it will come to a labor union shut down. the shipping yards and the truck drivers will get fed up. I completely reduced my travel expense, and because of it the goverment get less of it's tax from me, because i can't do the work cause i'll lose by time i pay for the travel.

I happened to be in the Milwaukee area the other day - on the freeway system during peak traffic hours to be exact. I noted that probably 80% of the vehicles (including the big SUV's) had a driver and no one else in the vehicle. So much for car pooling as a way to save energy. I started to get a little upset over the situation then realized it's not our fault - it's the government's fault (more specifically, George Bush's fault). Why doesn't he come around to arrange car pools? Why doesn't he come around to schedule our days so we handle all of our errands with one trip? Why doesn't he try to sell us that little 4 cylinder engine or that hybrid? Why doesn't he lower the prices of gas in a supply and demand economy? I guess we, as citizens and consumers, will just have to take the bull by the horns and try to solve this problem ourselves - yeah, right.

Hay Mr. Hicks, could you get your producer to do a story on the REAL reason that gas has skyrocketed? If Saudi Arabia still owes us over 100 Billion dollars for stopping Sadam and his henchmen from taking over their country during Desert Shield, why are they not repaying us in the form of oil? No one can tell me that this is because of saving the environment that it is hogwash. Oil is a naturally made substance that supports all lifestyles. If we were not intended to use it to its fullest, then why did God put it here and give us the technology to use it? I am sick and tired of the minority dictating what the majority will do. Anti smokers, anti sex, anti automobile, anti god in our schools, anti government, anti anti anti.

Enough already. Some politician needs to find his or her cahona's and fight fire with fire. I am not going to walk anywhere so some whacko environmentalist can feel better about themselves.

But answer me this, if I buy a car from a family member that owns 3 vehicles and the car has a retail value of $10,000 but I bought it for only $500.00 (family discount), the State will jump in and say NOPE. You have to pay taxes on the whole thing!! So then why are they not jumping in when the tables are reversed?

Riddle that one. Oh ya, Mr. Bush is now worth a kazillion dollars. Must be from all that oil on his property, at least someone can still drive a big pick-up.

As long as G. Bush is in office or anyone else that goes along with this war is in office, gas prices will keep going up. The war is being funded through the high price of gas.

Oh I forgot to mention don't get a catastrophic illness and hold a private insurance policy either. Between the insurance premiums and the gas prices you will go broke.

How this country isn't smart enough to get off of this Global Welfare program we're on and start taking care of things at home?

Okay, I have a buddy in Kuwait (was in the army, captured and tortured when Sadam invaded), and yes, gas is cheap... its pretty much water in the well there. BUT, they also pay extraordinary amounts for utilities, like thousands of dollars a year for electricity, so dont get too upset.

The problem with gas is that its an oligopoly. There is 'OPEC', and a few major companies working together, and then there is the US. Its our own fault really. We let the lobbyists whipe out the possibilities of alternative fuels after WW1 (oil lobbyists petitioned to have the US make alternatives 'uncompetitive' and help set up the infrastructure and government backing for oil). Until then, all cars ran on gas, ethanol, etc. So now, years and years later, conservatives have determined that we will only use gas, and now those who supply the gas are raising the price. Well... why didnt we keep ethanol or other alternatives way back when? Oh, yeah... gas was too cheap to bother. No matter if you like it or not, gas is on the way up, and thats it. Its still a deal in the US... UK is something like 6pounds ($12) a gallon... been like that for a while. Conservatives kept blasting 'global warming' and stagnating change towards alternative energy. The thing is, now its not so much the environment, but the economy, which dictates that perhaps we should have started running on something else a long time ago. The fed has predicted that oil will reach peak demand in ten years, meaning oil will be too expensive to be worth using for our energy needs. If we had alternatives in place alread

already, at least oil would have to compete against these alternatives, and the price might not be so bad... but its too little, too late. This should be interesting... I think we will see many changes similar to post WW2 Europe. Suburbs and cities wont be as large since people wont want to travel as far unless by mass transit (rail). Smaller communities with local commerce, industry, and housing will pop up... heck, more people will want to live downtown again rather than out in the burbs. Homes on the East Side should really shoot up again soon.
