Wisconsin's first Steak n Shake has now opened, although they are still doing staff training and will not open for breakfast for about two weeks. It is located on 124th & Burleigh in Tosa.

I remember going to a Steak n Shake years ago in Illinois. But I don't remember it being a sit down restaurant with a waitress. The place had a 30-minute wait today. So I would hold off and go in a few weeks when the crowds slow down. (I guess we were all just too anxious to try something new.)

I stuck with their signature items "an original steakburger", "famous french fries" and strawberry "hand-dipped milk shake". I had to take it to go since the place was so busy. But even that took about 10 minutes.  But the drive-thru seemed to be moving along.

The fries are small straw type, very good, and come in a pretty good size holder. The burger was good, but the shake was better. Burger reminds of Culvers or Sollys. Fairly flat, so order an "original double" and it won't be that filling.

They have a large menu if you "eat in". It is definately worth checking out..... later. Let me  know how you like it.

Interesting! I work on 124th & Townsend. Going home last week, I saw this place and thought to myself - what is that?

I will definately try it. The fries sound good to me!

I first went to Steak-N-Shake while visiting my sister in IL. I thought "Stupid name, how good could the food be?"

Boy was I wrong. . . Sure the burgers aren't huge like you get at Kopps, but they taste every bit as good. The fries are great. I love those little shoestring fries, much better than even McDonalds fries (and I would run over my mother for McDonalds fries - figuratively of course).

I am not a huge milkshake fan, but I did try some of my son's and it was good - but not being a fan, it really didn't move me.

Hopefully, this will catch on here in Milwaukee and we can look forward to having a couple more that are closer to me. 124th is way to far to go.

The reason it was so crowded is because they were doing 50% off for the first week. We put in their security system and they asked us if we wanted to try it, but they were so busy I said I'd wait. Now I can't wait to try it. These descriptions sound tasty!

There's another new flatlander restaurant that's in that area, it's called Potbelly. They have great subs and soups. It's in the strip mall on Capitol and 124th. Try it if you get a chance. To me, Cousin's has gone downhill ever since they stopped making their bread fresh. Lately the Cousin's I get has hard, crumbly bread. It tastes stale. Such a shame. Cousin's used to be the best. Now I like Jimmy John's and Potbelly's better.

Katbird - I swear you are all over the place. Good for you for putting in a security system!

I love shoestring fries and will have to try it.

Jimmie John's is good, as well as Potbelly's.

When I was out drinking (back in the 70's), everyone had to go to George Webb's or Superbia's. (Did I spell that right?) I tried Superbia's on Hwy 100 and Bluemound and they are not what they used to be.

My daughter is a Manager at a Gold Coast sub shop and they are so close to Superbia's taste and I think they are even better.

Hi again Jane!
Where is there a Gold Coast?

OOOO, Potbelly's I love it. Not the worlds largest subs, but they are good and what you get fill you up.

There is one downtown on Plankinton and Wisconsin where the Hooters used to be (directly across the street from Mo's, The Riverside Theater and Boarders Books.

While working at Marquette I would have Jimmy Johns 2 or 3 times a week. They are good, but after a while one can grow tired to them.

Erbert & Gerbert has a place on Water St. between Wisconsin and Michigan that is pretty good.

There used to be a Steak & Shake in front of Regency Mall in Racine. They closed because people didn't care for their service. We went in with a small group of people for dinner after shopping at the mall. Let's just say we never went back. My husband ordered a shake and received it well after we were finished with our meals (only after asking where it was a million times). I'm hoping the new one in Tosa will be better than what we endured during our visit.

Ok..I went to the one in Tosa and I am VERY unimpressed. Four dollars and 40 cents for a burger no better than Culver's small one. My bottom bun was soggy, the burger was small and they put huge pickle slabs on them. My fries were cold and soggy and my shake wasn't thick at all. The total for a burger like that, fries and a shake was 10 bucks!! Never again!!
