I read an interesting article last week about pet prescriptions.  In it, a North Carolina couple spent thousands of dollars in meds just so their pet can stay healthy.

According to the Animal Health Institute, Americans bought $2.9 billion in pet drugs in 2005.  At first, I was very surprised -- but come to think of it, I've contributed to that number.  My dog and I have waited it out when the vet's office has been full.  My family and I have spent a number of late nights at the animal ER and never have we been the only ones there.

I know lots of people who consider their pet a member of the family.  I also know a number of people who will pay the extra money for special diets and medication just so their pet can be healthy.  Then there's the other couple of people I know people who think a dog is "just" a dog.

What do you think about all this money being spent on their care?

I am a animal lover. I have owned everything from hamster's to horse's. They all have been given the best care affordable by me. Vet checks regularly, the best food, regular grooming and unconditional love. I know some people over do it with their animal's and I that's their prerogative to do so. I know some people have those thought's as you say, "a dog is just a dog" or cat or horse etc. They have feelings too. They can get the same sicknesses we do. I would think that those people that feel that way would be better off with a stuffed animal.
We also need to be rational when it comes time for our pet's to be put down and not suffer needlessly no matter how much money we spend on them. We can not for our own selfish reasons forget our beloved companions and the love they've shown us. We need to do what is right for them when the time comes and let them go. That's the hardest part of being a pet owner!

I will be the first to admit I was one of those people that thought of a dog as "just a dog". That was about 2 months ago!!! We adopted our sweet little puppy Molly from the animal shelter in Jan. and since then only the best will do! Just like I will make changes in our budget for unexpected expenses with our children I fully understood that would be the case for our new member of our family. She's worth it!

My wife and I have to give our mutt the best care we can; the critter is so affectionate we have no doubt she'd do the same for us, were our roles reversed. Seriously, we wound up with a 50 pound lapdog that acts absolutely thrilled to have been adopted.

I know many people who spend a lot of money on boats, snowmobiles, motorcycles, and other big-ticket toys. From where I sit, none of these things add as much to one's life as a good dog.

If I've had a rough day, seeing my best guy, Aso, makes all the bad go away. I'm sure many pet owners would agree, they add so much to our lives. My guy was adopted from the Humane Society and he's added so much joy to my life. For me, it's worth it to buy medicine and treat conditions if it will truly help. They depend on us to help take care of them! But I also agree with antmarta that we do need to be rational about when we decide to treat, to what extent, and when to let go. I've gone through a similar situation and it was very difficult -- definitely the hardest part of being a pet owner. I just cherish the time we did have together.

antmarta and I were just on the phone this morning and my cat was purrrriing up a storm. Antmarta held the phone up to her cat Molly, so she could hear Charlie.

I forgot to mention how snooty her cat was. She just got up and walked away.. or maybe she was just playing hard to get. (hahaha)

I wish someone could just see my vet bills. I have 9 house cats. Each one of them gets their yearly check up, and rabie shots. Plus I have 4 dogs. I used to have a dog that had to use a doggy wheelchair but I finaly had to put her down. That cart cost me $400.00 plus I breed German Shepherds so I have the etra bills for that AND to top it off I have 1 horse. But I must say that the horse vet bills are much less that the cat or dog bills.
What can I say.....? I dont have kids.
