PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has every right to be concerned about horses being raced at ages younger than three, and problems with breeding, medication, the use of the whip and dirt-versus synthetic tracks.

But to single out jockey Gabriel Saez for the way he handled Kentucky Derby runner-up Eight Belles is wrong.

In the wake of the filly's death, a PETA representative said that the jockey should have sensed that Eight Belles was having problems and not used the whip.

     WHAT?!

In reality-and this comes from the filly's trainer-Saez did the right thing by using the whip to prevent the hosre from crashing into the rail.

NOBODY could have foreseen Eight Belles having to be euthanized after breaking both front ankles, following the race!

I don't question PETA using the "big stage" to bring up valid points about the sport of horse racing.

But to call out the jockey was flat out irresponsible.

I Agree to that.

Now I May Not Watch or Be Into Horse Racing, but I did hear about that on the news and that is all out of proportion.

I only heard about "The Jockey Was Using The Whip Just A Bit Too Hard or Whatever", But I Don't Know. It Just Seems To Me Everyone Has More Than 2 Different Stories Going On Here.

I'm surprised this wasn't a Ted's Take, but if it was, I didn't catch his opinion, but if it wasn't maybe you should bring that up and let's hear what good ol' T.P. has to say.

It's just devastating shameful to see what happened to the horse like that and to be honest, it sounds like this was all an accident, and nothing was intentional here and no one checked to examine on the horse to see if it was up for to be racing in the first place.

But I got a question and I'm very curious. When they said the horse collapsed and was on it's last breath and died, did Eight Belles win the race in the end?

Antoine~ Eight Belles came in second place as the only filly racing.

Tom~ I appreciate your blog. As I responded in Jen Lada's blog, I am a proud supporter of the Humane Society and PETA and while PETA may be a little extreme at least they are doing something positive for animals who can not speak for themselves. We may never know how this "freak accident" happened but at least people are looking a little closer at the ethics of horse racing and all else involved.

PETA Is a crock, and if you're a true lover of animals you WOULDN'T support them.

1. They support The use of humiliating and hurting people, even resorting to violence or threats of violence to "Get their point across."

2. It has been proven time and again that donations to PETA does not go to helping animals.

They spend their money on multi million dollar attack ads, billboards, commercials, web development, and to pay spokespeople to speak on their behalf.

(While some claim they volunteer their time, that time does come at a price. Past documents have shown just how much it costs to get a celeb to "volunteer".)

Very little money actually goes to helping animals compared to humane societies like the ASPCA.

Animals that could use that money die everyday at shelters because they don't have the funds to care for them long term. Instead of spreading the money where its needed, PETA chooses to spend that money on Getting Pam Anderson to pose nude.

During the last superbowl in fact... PETA had a commercial they were willing to pay $4.2 million to have aired during the game, targeting Kentucky Fried Chicken.

FOUR POINT TWO MILLION DOLLARS.

$100 would save 2 dogs and a cat from Euthanasia... Feed a shelter for a week... and buy new toys and blankets.

Can you imagine the good 4.2 MILLION bucks would do at a shelter or spread around several shelters in the nation?

instead they want to make commercials and pay to have them aired.

Your donations at work. Commercials to talk about the disgust of KFC, while hundreds of animals are being euthanised at shelters that can't afford to care for them.

Way to go PETA. Great way to prioritize.

This is actually a good article.

PETA can't even dispute many of these facts, because a lot of these facts came from PETA's own documents.

Two interesting links to read. (Please be careful when going through that sight tho. I stumbled upon a link about the PETA members who euthanised 30 healthy and adoptable dogs then threw them in the trash. There is photographic evidence from the Prosecuter's table.)

BREAKING NEWS
______________________________________________

New York City - In a startling development members of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) disbanded after being shown a basic food chain chart by Marion High School Biology teacher Fred McInnes.

"I was surprised that they weren't aware how the food chain worked,"
said McInnes. "I just showed them the basic food chain with humans on top."

"He showed us the chart and it was like somebody turned the lights on," said the PETA President. "We're at the top. We can eat anything below us. That makes my job useless. I never looked at it that way."

After showing the chart to several members an emergency board meeting was called. By a vote of 12-0, PETA was disbanded. "I'm really kind of heartbroken," PETA member Jenny Golsen said. "I'm looking forward to getting that new fur coat though. Does this mean I can eat a hamburger? Yee-haw!"
