Ted_Perry's Blog

Researchers in Great Britian and America have concluded that the 'midlife crisis' is something that will affect people across the world, not just in Western Europe and the United States.

They've even come up with a U-shaped formula that shows we're happiest and the start and the end of our lives. At the bottom of that "U" is the age of 44  where the probability of depression peaks.  As I'm 43 and 9 months, this story jumped out at me today.

In my "Ted's Take" tonight, I talked about a guy named Clarence Garrett who I know from the YMCA.  I profiled Clarence(who just graduated from college at the age of 87) ten years ago as he was always happy and he told me then it was because there was just no other choice. That always clicked with me. Sometimes, it's simple enough to say "Just Be Happy Already." Sometimes it's not.

And that's where you come in. What's your secret of happiness? No judgment here, just asking you to share your tricks for happiness. I don't care if it's a sunrise, a Bible verse, a yoga trick, a joke....just asking you to share.

Thanks in advance.

My secrets of happiness is knowing that #1 the God of the Universe loves me no matter what, I always have music in my heart (I listen to my Ipod all the time) and laughter, one favorite way I laugh is watching America Funniest Home videos. Last I love to be by the Ocean on the West Coast and watch a sunset and listen to the waves.

Why worry about things you are unable to control? Live each day as if it were your last and SMILE! If you smile, chances are you might make someone else smile. Life is good!

I believe in Smith & Wesson. And Ruger. I never have a better day than when I have been on the range. Anybody ever tried out a Bushmaster?? Now those things are FUN!!

Cooking a big meal.
It makes everyone sit down and talk to each other and I love the conversation, even if the T.V. is on. Good food always makes people happy and that makes me happy.
When I need my alone time to think and sort out life's happenings I go somewhere quiet with a lot of trees and not many people. Having five people in the house can make you feel smothered and I find happiness taking a break sometimes.

Honestly, the best way to make yourself feel happy is to make someone else feel happy. It's beneficial to both parties.

great blog teddyp!!--i can relate

i'm 42 yrs plus 7 months so happiness to me is knowing that TP is 14 months older....JK.

honestly it's family, meeting new people, ...traveling...actually everything gets better with age because i have stopped worrying about what others think about me, i'm more focused

(for ex:...i'm starting to wear the black socks with shorts with impunity.LOL)

I think our middle-age woes occur from our bodies wearing out and the realization that we "used to" be able to do many things. I find myself saying things like,"I used to be able to whoop butt in basketball","I used to be able to eat anything I wanted".....etc.. I've even joked with friends that I need a t-shirt that just reads "Used To".
I would bet Teddy used to be able to jump high enough to do the Lambeau Leap.
Besides, both of you need to stop being afraid, I'm 45 and 6 months and look at me....hehe.
I'm just so chipper and positive!!
::::sarcastic grin:::::
It's all downhill from here!!!!
At least on the downhill you don't have to try as hard. Just don't go too quickly or you may slip and end up heading down the hill faster. Maybe that's why as you get older you just want to relax more.

"Granny said sonny, stick to your guns if you believe in something, no matter what. Cuz it's better to be hated for who you are than be loved for who you're not. She was five feet of concrete, New York born and raised on the slick city streets. She'd cold stare ya down, stand her ground, still kicking and screaming at 93. I remember just how frail she looked in that hospital bed, taking her last few breaths of life and smiling as she said'don't get too high on the bottle. Just a little sip every now and then. Fight your fights, find your grace in all the things that you can't change and get right with the man." Van Zant

I beleive happiness is a choice. I choose to be happy. I know that my life was planned out for me before I was even born so I'm just going along for the ride and enjoying every bit of it. All the bad things that have happened to me were meant to happen. Looking back I wouldn't trade any of it. All the hardhsips I've had have made me stronger & happier. I wonder what God has in store for me each and every day I wake up. I'm 48 and 9 months and LOVINLIFE more and more the older I get!!

Wait till you get to 50 your learn that happiness isn't external it is an internal. I think giving also is apart of having joy the more you give the more joy and I forgot to mention being thankful for my family and everything God has given.

Being happy comes from within..too many ppl focus on what is unhappy in their life instead of looking around to fins happiness in what they have. Happiness for me is knowing my family is healthy, safe & together. having dinner together everynight..and enjoying the warmth of a cozy fire..needed that alot lately!

Hi Ted, sorry I joined the conversation a little late. I believe that when you keep learning, you will achieve some measure of happiness. Whether it's a hobby, or going back to college or taking a cooking class, knowing something, anything keeps your mind sharp and happy. And, if you happen to get pretty good at your hobby, how about teaching it to someone who wants to learn? After 20+ years, I'm back in college finishing something I should have done years ago. Fixing a life's regret can make you happy too....

"Qui enim voluerit animam suam salvam facere perdet eam qui autem perdiderit animam suam propter me inveniet eam"

This is my favorite Bible verse in Latin. In English it can be translated:

"For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for My (e.g. God's) sake will find it."

To me, what this simply means is that if individuals stay within the confines of their comfort zone, it will shrink around them and eventually the individual will shrivel up inside and become suffocated by this zone. It is only by expanding the limits of one's comfort zone that one can experience true freedom and life.
