Inspired by the actions of the state legislature last week, I too went out and spent money I didn't have for something I really didn't need. In my case, it was more music.

I read some good reviews of the new Alison Krauss/Robert Plant CD called "Raising Sand". I love Alison Krauss. If she put out an album in which she just covered WHAM songs, I'd still probably buy it because of her voice.  She could rent herself out as a lullabye singer and I'd dip into my 401K plan to get a good night's sleep.

I was never a huge Led Zeppelin fan mostly because I never felt like smoking pot before putting an album on. (Settle down Zep-heads, I'm just teasing.)

Ok, here's the deal on "Raising Sand". I didn't love it. In fact, I barely like it. Krauss and Plant sound fantastic and they play off each other well. The problem is I didn't care for the song selection or the music--and that I blame on T-Bone Burnett who produced it.

But I have much better things to say about another Alison Krauss release: It's called "A Hundred Miles or More" and it's sort of a 'best of' album. This one really features her brilliant pipes and her ability to tell a story thru a song. It's just lovely.  There are also some heart-breakingly good duets with James Taylor, Brad Paisley and John Waite. I'd get this album if I were you, it's a great listen.

Speaking of great listens.....

It took me waaaaayyyyyy too long to get exposed to the genius of Johnny Cash and I'm ashamed to admit it took even longer to get hooked on Willie Nelson. "The Essential" is a collection of Willie songs that you expect ("Mammas Don't Let Your Babies...On the Road Again"..etc) but it also has some great covers of classics (Patsy Cline's "Crazy" and Ray Charles' "Georgia on my Mind") and some great duets with Emmylou Harris and Waylon Jennings).

I never gave Willie much credit. I always thought of him as sort of a punch line for jokes about back taxes and excessive marijuana smoking. I was so wrong.  If a campfire could sing, it'd sound like Willie and I meant that as a compliment. There's a smoky warmth in his throat that draws you in. I understand-finally-why he's such a hit with people who've seen a thing or two in life.

Hi Ted,

Both of my parents were HUGE Johnny Cash fans and growing up he, and the other "classics" were all I heard. My friends thought I was to "hick" because that type of music was pretty much all I knew. It amazes me now that it's ok to like that type of country. Oh, well. I still have all the albums that my parents had, they are pretty fun to look at. And I also agree, Alison Krauss has an amazing voice. Check out her songs on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? Soundtrack.

Sorry it took you so long. They are all fantastic artists in my eyes. My kids who are in their early 20's are totally into Johnny Cash, Patsy and Willie. Who would have thought? Funny, when they were little and I had that music blarring they told me I was an old and needed to "get with it"! Look who's listening now.
Whiskey Lullabye is one of my favs! And the video is great too.

Note to TP: Willie Nelson singing "Crazy" on "The Essential" is not a 'cover' since he wrote the song. (Patsy Cline covered the classic Nelson composition in 1962.)

I always thought that Elvis wrote "You Were Always On My Mind" because he sang it, but then found out it was Willy. I guess Willy is good at more than just singing.

Sorry Lovinlife. Willie did a nice cover of 'Always On My Mind", but he didn't write it.

Johnny Christopher, Mark James and Wayne Carson Thompson co-wrote that song which was originally recorded by Brenda Lee and released on June 12, 1972. Elvis released it in 1973. Nelson in 1982.

Really...the music on Raising Sand was all over the place. The one song I did get hooked on is Rich Woman. It had sort of a Pulp Fiction feel to it and those instrumentals would have been nice if they had been in some of the other songs.

(T-Bone was involved with the music for the movie Cold Mountain, and some of that is on the A Hundred Miles or More album.)

I agree with you Ted. The new album by krauss newest release it's fantasic I love it. I am a huge Johnny Cash fan as well and simply enjoy brad paisley as well. I actually didn't buy the raising sand cd because I didn't particularly enjoy it. Well anything country is def. my taste. Johnny Cash and Patsy Cline are honestly legends which will never be forgotten.

Often, people unfamiliar with country music discount many of the acts without giving it a try.

I'm not a big fan of country music --- so a few times my husband dragged me to concerts and I left delighted.

Two of the best concerts I've been to were Brookes and Dunn and Toby Keith. In fact, I had a 24 hour crush on Toby Keith after I saw him perform. What a rush!

Johnny,Willie,Conway,Dolly,Pasty,Loretta and so many more those were they days of great Country.

There are some great of today also Reba,Randy Travis,Garth,Alan Jackson and many more.

I love it when I can sit down and listen to music and understand the words they are singing.

To me also of the music today sounds just like someone is screaming and you can not understand a word they are saying.
