Fox reporter Jonathan Serrie was on with us during our 5pm news today for what we call a "talk back"--it's basically a chance for anchors in one town to ask the reporter in another to tell us more about the story. Serrie is in Blacksburg, Virginia and he told Beverly and me a story about how VTU students made cookies and went from news truck to news truck 'thanking' crews for telling the story of the students who lost their lives.  That was a first for me.

Those students were witness to an unspeakable act and yet they were checking in on news crews. This isn't about how to deal with the media. This is about the grace I've seen from student after student after student interviewed about Monday's carnage.

I had the night off from "the news" tonight so naturally I came home to watch "the news" and as I flicked around from coverage on broadcast and cable stations one point was crystal clear: these are some of the most poised men and women I've seen on airwaves in a long time.  I watched one after another. Each was intelligent, poised, gracious and well-spoken.  On my best day in college I wasn't as articulate as any of them. And this, I'm quite certain, is not their best day.

I have no great insight on that. Nothing more to add.

They  just seem to be a credit to a school going thru a beyond-awful time and to their parents who surely can't wait to hug them.

I totally agree with you, Ted. I was pretty amazed at their poise, given the situation...

I agree...these kids are dealing with the most horrific act imaginable, yet their unselfishness and poise shines above all. Their parents should be so proud of them.

I'd agree with you as well. I've been fortunate enough to spend the past 6 months visiting friends in NC. And the one thing that has stuck out to me is how friendly and well mannered most, almost all the people are there. The poise and well spoken students at VT is just incredible. At the worst of times these young adults are showing incredible character. My heart and prayers go out to all of those affected by this tragedy.

I, too was amazed and humbled by the incredible poise with which these kids carried themselves in the face of such a tragedy.

As I think of my own child going off to College next year, I can only pray that something so horrible will never happen to her. As much as I would like to think that this could never happen at her school, I do know, from past events on school campuses, that this is a possibility everywhere. And it scares the hell out of me!

Very good point Ted!
My only wish is that all of the TV stations would stop airing the killer over and over again. Some magazines already have him on their covers and I am sickened by this. Why can't we hear about the amazing lives that were lost? As sad as the stories would be I cannot take another day looking at the killer, why do news stations really think this is what we want to see hour after hour? I truly believe that all of these pictures and focus on the "killer" add more to the desensitizing of our culture to violence. I am going to quote U2, "And I can't tell the difference between ABC news, Hill Street Blues, and a preacher on the old time gospel hour."
