he's done.  That's a great old sports cliche for a pitcher who's got nothing left. It's time to take him out, he's no good to anyone right now.

Apparently it's not just for athletes.  Saturday at Miller Park a bearded dude sat down at the end of the row where we were sitting.  He's must have been 5'10'', 250 pounds with a mane of hair that hadn't been cut in awhile. Might have been a nice guy but he looked liked a bad ass. Let's just say if a fight broke out, you were hoping he was on your side.

He showed up in the 7th inning, sat down and finished drinking what I'm quite certain was NOT his first beer of the day. Within minutes he was passed out:chin planted firmly in chest, hands clasped around his Genuine Draft plastic bottle, and eyes lids closed as if they were heavier than manhole covers.

A bunch of Cubs fans sitting near him started placing their near-empty beers on his lap and in his arms.  One by one until he had a small recycling center covering him.

And then the cell phones came out. Paris Hilton didn't have her picture taken as much as this guy did yesterday. Some posed with him, others just took video and pictures and started sending them to friends everywhere. An usher and some cops came by, told them to knock it off and then decided (wisely, I think) to just let the guy sleep it off. I guess the thought being a passed-out drunk is safer than an awake one.

The guy's head HAS to be pounding today. Monday morning, in offices from Chicago to Des Moines, people will be sharing the e-mail sent to them by friends who were at the game. The subject line will read: "drunk Brewers fan..must see" and strangers will laugh at the sight of him.

And the thing is, I can't muster an ounce of sympathy for the guy.

He did wake up. He looked around and saw he was a spectacle and the near-empty bottles covering him. And then (I kid you not) he started drinking what was left in each bottle placed there by strangers who wanted nothing more than to mock him.

Baseball. For some it's America's Passed-Out Time.

I don't blame him. Since I quit drinking I can't watch baseball. It's like watching grass grow. And the fact that everybody around the drunken sot had little else capturing their attention is a testament to that very truth: baseball is boring.

You'll know it's me in the stands if, one of these days, the camera scans the crowd and there's a guy holding a banner saying "DO SOMETHING!" At the very least, baseball needs a pitch clock, limited managerial time outs, and they've got to disallow that stepping out of the batters box nonsense.

Maybe we need a Vince McMahon XLB league. I mean, we've got guys on steroids holding bats... it DOES have potential...

awwww....well I like baseball.

But honestly, I can't decide who's worse, the people mocking him or the drunk.

Seriously sad.

I've seen this a few times at Miller Park myself. It's downright ugly!! Lets hope he was doing his best "Wrigley Field North" impersonation!

Antmarta...you've seen people do the dump cans on a sleeping person thing before?
Since when do people feel it's ok to do something physically to someone they don't know?

No Katbird I am talking more in reference to people just coming in to the ball park so smashed out of their skulls that they can't even walk. I've seen some stager into their seats drunker than a skunk and fall asleep in them. I've even seen a guy fall down the stairs he was so drunk. I do not condone this type of behavior, being so drunk you can't even stay awake to watch a ball game or making any person in this drunken state the object of ridicule.

I don't understand why they don't stop serving someone who is visibly intoxicated.

You know I don't understand why they don't either kat. I am sure a lot of them are in the parking lot drinking their fill prior to entering the park. They shouldn't even be able to enter the park in the first place in that state!

Last summer we went to a Brewers game courtesy of a local paint company my husband does business with. We were on a bus loaded (and I do mean LOADED) with a bunch of painting contractors and their employees, many of whom were three sheets to the wind before getting to the stadium. After a two-hour tailgate party, half the bus stayed outside while we went in. A few showed up in the fourth inning, drunker than skunks, and still got served.

After the game was scary, when one of the drunks got into the bus driver's seat and almost had the thing in gear! My husband tore out of the bus and told the driver, who was standing near the door smoking. He was in the bus like a shot and got the guy out of the seat.

I think we were the only two sober people on the bus, besides the driver. Afterwards, the store manager apologized to my husband and assured him things would be different next year. Ya, right. Needless to say, we won't be attending the beer bash baseball trip again!

That's just a shame. Imagine the amount of drunk drivers on the road after a ball game. They should put breathalizers in the stadium for security purposes and if you blow at or above the legal limit you're done, stick a fork in ya!!! Take your car keys and get another ride.
I hate when I see intoxicated parents with kids. That REALLY pisses me off. You see that at ball games, Summerfest and State Fair. These people are driving home with their children. They should be ashamed and stopped.

The true sign of an alcoholic is when you say you can't have fun without alcohol.
I should know.

I don't drink, and I've been accused of being alcohol phobic, but I'm not. I just grew up with aunts and uncles who got toasted at every family gathering and let their kids have a 'schluck' whenever they wanted it. I tried that a couple times, until I realized how nasty beer tasted. Then seeing the behavior of my relatives while drunk, I decided that if I was going to make myself look like an idiot, I'd much rather do it sober, so I'd know what I was doing! LOL

Well I have a couple drinks when I go out, just because....Moderation. I have kids but can consume two beverages and keep it at that.

Some people are just idiots.

I agree with you, Jen. I don't know which is more sad, the guy that's drunk or the people making fun of him!

I really don't feel sorry for him, though. He did get himself into that condition.
I'm not a drinker, but I certainly wouldn't begrudge those who drink IN MODERATION!
When you go that far, it's time to stop.
