Wayne was a phony. A chickenhawk who was all bluster and no substance. (And a bad actor to boot!)

Aw hell no...if someone is phoney it's you kenny, I mean ifilus! And that chickenhawk remark, I'm betting it describes you to a tee. (My, my the things people say out of envy.) LOL

Shads, I loved it, especially the pictures. Welcome to blogging!

Shad, I thought it was very nice.

As for John Wayne being phony, I guess to each his own. That being said, I will take movies like The Quiet Man or El Dorado (I could go on and on) over most of the junk that is on T.V. nowdays.

Again Shad, great tribute to our beautiful country, made only better by the voice of John Wayne.

iIfilus you’re showing your ignorance when you make the statement that John Wayne was a
phony. Granted, that may be your opinion, and like butt holes, everyone has one. However, yours appears to have a case of diarrhea.

John Wayne always supported the men in uniform. Due to a football injury he was never
able to serve in the military, even though he made a special tip to Washington to ask to be
able to serve. When they declined, John Wayne turned his energies to ways in which he could help. He made films for the War dept. during WW2. John Wayne was very active with the USO visiting the troops from WW2 to Vietnam. His film, "The Green Berets" was Wayne’s tribute to those who served.

John Wayne went on several moral boosting tours to Vietnam. He never shied away from "hot
zones" and instead of having separate quarters, he ate and stayed with the troops. During this visit he was given a "Yard" bracelet by the Montagnard People of Vietnam. The silver bracelet was presented to him by a Montagnard Strike Force led by a U.S. Special Forces A-Team. The Montagnard bracelet is a symbol of friendship and respect.

I’m not placing John Wayne on a pedestal. I’m simply pointing out he is one of the many
people that are proud of America and are not shy about announcing it. You appear to have
missed the message, preferring to focus on who was reciting it. Perhaps if you stepped out
of that little dark room you dwell in you’d find your negativity wouldn’t develop so easily.

Wayne was an outspoken supporter of the Vietnam War, but he was not a proponent of free speech. In the 1950s, he was president of the right-wing Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals and cheered the Hollywood blacklist during the House Un-American Activities Committee’s purge of entertainment industry leftists.

Later, he denounced antiwar protesters, saying: “As far as I’m concerned, it wouldn’t bother me a bit to pull the trigger on one of ’em.”

Wayne was, in reality, a draft dodger. He was a blusterous cheerleader and champion of militaristic patriotism and combat he had never dared to experience. Indeed, Wayne had “other priorities” during WWII — achieving superstardom was more important to him than defeating fascism. With much of the acting competition away in the Pacific and European theaters, Wayne was able to storm movie theaters to solidify his stardom. While Jimmy Stewart and his fellow celebrity servicemen were real action heroes, Wayne was a mere celluloid hero who played the part in the safety of Tinseltown’s home front and back lot.

According to Pilar Wayne, her husband “became a ‘superpatriot’ for the rest of his life trying to atone for staying home” during WWII.

Part of the reason we will never have peace in the world is because we judge people based on their beliefs.
I may not agree with what a lot of people think, but if their actions bring positive results, then I can put our differences aside and support their positive actions.
There will never come a time when everyone in the world agrees on everything.

I'm sure glad I focus on positives; because people who tend to focus on the negatives usually become losers (who go absolutely nowhere in life). Losers can't stand people who have accomplished so much, so they make them targets of criticism in order to feel good.

My high regard for John Wayne remains the same, despite the derogatory remarks meant to defame him.

ifilus I'm having trouble figuring out what part of "football injury" you don't understand. The military wouldn't accept him so he made films that brought the wars home to the public in a way that wouldn't demorilize the home front. at the same time the USO shows he did for the troops brought a little bit of home to the wars. to me that is a true patriot.

Shads, thanks for a great post. I enjoyed it alot.

I appreciate all the responses to my post. It is not surprising that one person appears to prefer to allow his brain’s negativity bias to dominate his thoughts. Hmmmm, wouldn’t that be an interesting topic?

cplweez: What exactly was the nature of the football injury that prevented Wayne from serving?
