Recently I had a wonderful dinner with friends and to our delight, our friends went above and beyond the call of duty.

They prepared two different kinds of steak - cuts of meat that were almost 2" thick! -  some beautifully prepared crab legs and double baked potatoes!  Of course there was drawn butter,  mushrooms and onions and some adult beverages.

Decadent?  You bet!  An everyday event for us?  No way!  We're most often eating chicken nuggets along side the kids or maybe something from the freezer section at Aldi or Pick n' Save.  A big splurge for us is to get a rotisserie chicken from the grocery store or pick up a pizza.   Our grill is only rarely graced with steak and is more likely to be barbecuing some chicken or hamburgers.  That all being said, it is wonderful to indulge every now and again and sometimes it takes good friends to remind you of the joys of good, well prepared, food.

Of course, as with most meals, its as much about the company as the food.  I have had memorable dinners over left over pizza because the group of friends was so wonderful but there is something to be said for getting out the good dishes, spending a few more dollars to get some top of the line ingredients and really treating yourself and your good company.

What's my point?  Am I bragging about my yummy dinner or something?  Well, sort of - it was brag worthy - but really I just thought I'd write this up as a reminder that sometimes you need to treat yourself and take the extra steps to make a meal or a get-together feel a bit more special.  It think Oprah has a saying that goes something like "use the Sunday dishes" and I guess I have to agree.  Even if you (like me) have to pinch every penny you've got, there are times when you need to go the extra mile - even if that just means frozen pizza on  Grandma's fine china!

I agree wholeheartedly!!
Some of our best BBQs with friends were nothing more than burgers and hot dogs while the kids played outdoor games.
What matters are the good friends and the atmosphere.
That sure sounds like a great dinner. We love grilling steak. We don't do it real often, but it is heaven when we do. Even the dog gets some tenderloin. Although it seems like such a waste because she doesn't even chew!!!
I saw your little one with you this morning!!
How precious!!!!
You are a really great dad and a fun weatherman.
I'm glad you came here!!
Enjoy your day, Rob!! Afterall, you guys forecasted it and here it is. Thank you for such a great day!! Why not thank you? People are quick enough to blame you when it isn't nice.

So Rob, did you let Brad cook for you? He is into all that isn't he?

I love to cook and to bake for other people, but as for my own family, they get lots of quick meals. But with my handy dandy food saver, we have bbq pulled pork (yes I did make it myself) and sirloin roasts, and ribs, along with a freezer full of great things to make for them when I feel like it. But my ultimate favorite dinner is breakfast. I have this pancake recipe that has only half a cup of flour in it and I don't use white flour. We top them with fruit, a small amount of nuts, and sugar free syrup. The kids absolutely love it.

And yes Rob, your baby is sweet. I miss those days.

Wow! You have great friends. I agree, wholeheartedly. When I finished my preliminary exams, I went to Pizza Hut and "pigged out" on their "all you can eat" pizza buffet and the next night, went to Olde country buffet and treated myself to a nice three course meal. I'm hopefully going to be an adjunct professor next semester, so I emphathize with you (e.g., pinching pennies). However, it is good from time to time to reward oneself for hard work and or effort.

Besides the importance of pinching pennies, I believe what is more important is avoiding credit card debt. As far as I'm concerned, credit card companies are nothing but glorified loan sharks. If a nice meal costs $20, pay with a credit card and it may end up costing $35 to $40 once interest kicks in. A family is better off staying within their budget by eating from the frozen food section at Pick N'Save than eating gourmet food on a regular basis and using credit cards in order to foot the bill.

omg, way off topic, but don't get me started on the credit card comapnies. They are thieves plain and simple. PEOPLE! STAY AWAY FROM THEM IF YOU CAN!!!!! I am excited because I had alot of debt and in less than 2 years, I will be debt free with the exception of my house. But I am paying through the nose and every other cavity in my body to do it. I just don't want to be strapped to anybody so after the credit cards are gone, I am going after the mortgage.

I love the last minute cook outs. On the week end one of my brothers or sisters will call and say (come on over). I do have to say that I am blessed with the whole family thing. My mother and step father also hold a good last minute cook out. No matter what week end it is, someone is having a cook out. Everyone usualy brings a dish to pass and we all chip in to buy the meat. It usualy turns out to be an all day feast. We will cook pork chops, chicken, burgers, hotdogs, brats, and ribs. I'm so glad summer is coming. I like my four seasons, but spring, summer and fall are the best. Thank you Rob for bringing us the weather forcast.

A long, long, time ago in a farmers field far, far away, Rob noticed a change in the wind and became fascinated with the weather. Why you ask? (Pause for you to say "why?") Well, it was at that moment he realized he was downwind of the manure pile on the turkey farm where he grew up! After that he watched the weather very carefully in an effort to save his sense of smell! Okay, that's not entirely true but I did grow up on a turkey farm and I have been fascinated with weather and broadcasting for quite some time. I began my career in radio before making the jump to TV. I worked on Good Morning Toronto. After that, I decided to pursue my dream of living and working in the U.S. and joined Wake Up Rochester in Rochester NY. I spent three years in "Bills Country" before coming to my senses and moving to "Packer-Town!" (GO PACK!) I also spent some time trying to make it big as a comic actor and studied the art of improvisation at Toronto's Second City Theatre with teachers like SCTV's Joe Flaherty! I moved here with my beautiful wife, Tanya, who's the real comedian in the family, my son Noah, who's giving my wife a run for the title of funniest Haswell and my daughter Nyla who is the cutest 2 feet of human being you could ever meet! We're very excited to be living in the great city of Milwaukee and we're looking forward to learning all there is to know about Wisconsin! By the way, where do you buy those cheesehead hats anyway?
