If you watched Wake Up this morning, you know we got into a chat about the dollar coin. Most of the Wake Up crew didn't like the idea but I have to say I am very much for it!

As you may know, I grew up in Canada where they have a one and TWO dollar coin with no paper bill equivalent.

Here they are:

But my Canadian upbringing isn't why I am for the coin idea. I actually agree with the idea because it is a long term cost savings!

I costs our government thousands to mint and dispose of old dollar bills. Coins last for decades where as bills have a very short life span. A coin can last 30 years whereas the average bill lasts about 2 years at best. Plus, the costs to the government of maintaining the quality and integrity of coins are lower than they are for notes, which must be inspected individually for fitness and counterfeits. To put it another way the government would have to produce 20 one-dollar notes over a 30-year period to match the life span of just one coin.

Here's more on coins vs. bills if you're curious:

On a side note: one of my favorite coins of all time has always been the quarter. Specifically the US quarter.

I used to save them when I was little and living in the land of Johnny Canuck. I always thought they were so cool and I would look at the year and imagine which cool event the coin might have been at. Think about it - because of the long life of a coin, that quarter could have been spent by a real hippy at the original Woodstock. Famous people might have had the exact coin you have. It's cool and fun to imagine if you ask me. In two years, how far could a bill really go?

My other favorite coin is the British one pound coin.

It has cool writing around the edges and it's very thick. It feels cool in your hand.

I'm actually not a coin collector, even though it sound like it! Ultimately, whether it's a coin or a bill, I'd just like few more of them every day!

I don't like the dollar coin idea. The biggest reason is because I hate change on me. At times I have allot in my purse. If I have dollar coins too, that just means a heavier purse.

Last time they tried the dollar coins, people just hoarded them. I am not sure if it will work this time.

If it does happen, I will just have to live with it. It's not that big of a deal though.

I used to use the Sacagewea (sp?) coins at rummage sales and most people loved getting them. The only time someone complained was a rummage sale at a church, and the person complaining was a nun! And to top it off, my total was only like 65 cents and I had told her I didn't want change back!

It is bad enough that Pennies, Dimes, Nickles, and Quarters slip out of my pockets when driving and end up between my seats. The new Dollar coin will likely find its way to my car floor (sooner or later); so I am not a fan of having dollars accumulating under my seats. On second thought it could be a great savings plan! I am a bit unsure, I just do not believe I am ready to give up the paper for coins. (I wonder if it would flatten on a railroad track like a penny- that could be neat)

It's funny you bring up the saving plan. When I go home to visit family, I am constantly under the impression that I have no cash then I shove my hand in my pocket and pull out like 14 bucks in coins! Piggy Banks fill up nicely with dollar (and two dollar) coins!

We used to do that penny on the track thing as kids too! I think it's a really bad idea though! We're lucky we never got caught or splattered! :-)

I picked up some of these at the bank this morning. My first impression was "These are quarters!".

I was all for this change, but upon seeing the coin I'm having second thoughts! I thought for sure it would be large and thicker than the Susan B. and Sacagawea. Nope. They're the same dimensions.

The only cool thing about this new coin is the "In God We Trust" inscription around the edge.

I can totally see my mixing the quarter and (Washington) dollar when at a vending machine, etc. Maybe it will be easier to distinguish when the other presidential coins come out.

Rob, Rob, Rob......I know you like the dollar coin idea, but it will confuse me too. I will think that it is a quarter also.

Also, I agree that it will make my purse heavier!

Then I will have to put my reading glasses on to figure out what I'm paying for!!! LOL

Rob
I'm not sure on this one although I agree it is too easy to loose a coin compaired to a bill.
Could you post a pic of the new one dollar coin?
It might help me decide.

I put a comparison picture in my pics section. Or, you can just go www.usmint.gov and look at it there. Their Flash animation shows it crisper and much thicker than it really is.

I always hated the loonie and the $2 coins (twoonie?) in Canada. Whenever I visited Toronto, by the end of the week, I'd think I didn't have a lot of money, but then I'd total up the change and realize I had at least $10! It's kind of a nice surprise, but it's also a pain to shlep all that change around.

Like someone else said, Americans tend to hoard strange coins. Or how about the $2? Remember those? They didn't last long.

The strangest coin I ever had was a nickel, I think, from the Bahamas. It was square, if I remember correctly. It was a loooong time ago!

A long, long, time ago in a farmers field far, far away, Rob noticed a change in the wind and became fascinated with the weather. Why you ask? (Pause for you to say "why?") Well, it was at that moment he realized he was downwind of the manure pile on the turkey farm where he grew up! After that he watched the weather very carefully in an effort to save his sense of smell! Okay, that's not entirely true but I did grow up on a turkey farm and I have been fascinated with weather and broadcasting for quite some time. I began my career in radio before making the jump to TV. I worked on Good Morning Toronto. After that, I decided to pursue my dream of living and working in the U.S. and joined Wake Up Rochester in Rochester NY. I spent three years in "Bills Country" before coming to my senses and moving to "Packer-Town!" (GO PACK!) I also spent some time trying to make it big as a comic actor and studied the art of improvisation at Toronto's Second City Theatre with teachers like SCTV's Joe Flaherty! I moved here with my beautiful wife, Tanya, who's the real comedian in the family, my son Noah, who's giving my wife a run for the title of funniest Haswell and my daughter Nyla who is the cutest 2 feet of human being you could ever meet! We're very excited to be living in the great city of Milwaukee and we're looking forward to learning all there is to know about Wisconsin! By the way, where do you buy those cheesehead hats anyway?
