My sister lives in AZ and has a swimming pool. The FIRST THING she teaches her new puppy is how to swim to the steps.  If there are no steps in you pool, there should be.  Any dog could get in there--labs and retrievers are common breeds and often LOVE to swim.  Just put them in when you're NOT out there...get one of those "help the old dog get on the furniture" things and weight it down so it doesn't float.  You owe it to your neighbors...Small kids should be taught to "go to the steps" too.  (My sister has had 4 dogs over the years, all shelties.  Shelties are not usually voluntary swimmers, but if they fall in (like my dog once) they know where to go.
