What happened to Bon Jovi?

It all started with "Who Says You Can't Go Home."  The track from their last album that features the lead singer from country group Sugarland.  But that version wasn't even the main one.  It was buried as the last track under the title "Dirty Little Secret."  Now they've gone and released a full Nashville inspired album.  Let's just admit it, they made a country crossover album.  Let me step back for a moment and say they I have every CD the band ever put out, including "This Left Feels Right" where they rerecorded a number of their hits.  I even enjoyed a few of those.  But even the band has admitted that idea was a mistake.  I have seen the band in concert seven times.  Most recently for their tour in supprt of "Have A Nice Day."  I even got to go on stage once a be a part of the fan pens they have has a part of their set.  One of my favorite Bon Jovi songs is "Captain Crash and the Beauty Queen from Mars."  And, as most fans are, I was able to overlook the occassional mistep.  But I listened to this entire album through a stream they are offering through the VH1 website.  What happened!  I'm not expecting them to continue recording songs like "Runaway" or "Roulette."  But come on.  These guys are totally selling out.  Even though most out the girls who were in Aqua Net and spandex 25 years ago, are now soccer moms driving min-vans, that doesn't mean their style as aged that dramatically.  This is just a case of the band picking the most financially lucrative market and catering to it.  Instead of being a band who is true to their fans, they are just another cog in the record industry machine.  This is the first Bon Jovi album that I will NOT be buying.

It is not necessarily selling out but trying something different. Most artists who have been around as long as Bon Jovi have been will want to try something new. Springsteen is a great example of that. He records what he wants to - not what is "expected" of him.

As for the new Bon Jovi - give it a chance. You may be surprised.

PS-I saw Bon Jovi the first time when they were at a Summerfest free stage way back during the Runaway days and drove a friend to Cedar Rapids to see them so I have been a fan for a while.

I saw Bon Jovi on the view yesterday and he explained a lot of his change and why. Times change, people change. He's still fantastic as a performer from what I see and hear and still as good looking as ever! Give his new music a chance~

Sometimes musicians get tired of playing a certain style of music and music is written from the heart in most cases. How is that selling out? Selling out would be mindlessly putting out their 80's style pop-rock to appeal to fans like you. Aerosmith comes to mind as a band that followed that formula.

Change is good. I hated the old Rush style, but I love what they're putting out now. (I have a broad range of various types of music, but a lot of the old Rush music sounded the same which is probably why I disliked them.)

I would think musicians who are flexible with music format have a greater potential for success. (Isn't that what Idol is all about too?)

I think my wife said it best when she said that Jon Bon Jovi is simply following his fans, not the other way around. And since the late 80's when Garth Brooks took the country by storm with country music, more and more fans have gravitated toward that genre (of course I wouldn't want to forget 'Achy Breaky Heart'). Personally I dont Bon Jovi has done an even decent album since 'New Jersey' in late '88, and I still say their second album, '7800 Farenheit' is by far their best record. But a Bon Jovi concert crowd in 1986 is still about the same as a Bon Jovi concert in 2007....probably 7 females to 3 males. And let's get serious, who doesn't like to have a few drinks at a karoake club and work up the nerves to sing 'Shot through the hear and you're to blame', or 'We're halfway there'.
