My question today--and I'm really interested in knowing what you think--is:

Should highschool students have an "open" lunch, in which they can leave school grounds for a half hour or so.

At this point, I don't see a real good reason for it.  My kid's highschool might have an open campus for lunch next year.

I know that kids are supposed to be learning responsibility at that age. But I don't know if an open lunch is the way to go. Going somewhere to grab lunch, eating it, and driving or walking back within a half hour seems like administrators are asking for trouble.

But  maybe it works at some schools.....????

Menomonee Falls has had open campus lunch for a long time and it has worked out well.
The kids would revolt if it was taken away.
I have never heard anyone complain about problems.

My nephew goes to Men Falls High and says that his friends know not to abuse the rules. It works out really well.

If it makes kids more responsible...

I had an open campus in school. Worked well there were really never any issues around it. Friend lived right behind school so we usually ended up with a home cooked meal from his mom, better than any school lunch!!

The seniors at our school can leave campus, but they have to sign out first, then sign back in when they come back. Everybody used to be able to go off campus between finals, but now we have to stay. A lot of people complained about it, but I don't think it's such a bad idea. Being at school for 2 hours from the end of one final to the beginning of the other with your friends is actually pretty fun if you don't have class (i.e. stealing people's cell phones, turning them on silent, then being chased all over campus, raiding the lunch room, sharing chinese food)

As long as it doesn't have more incidents as with the Wakesha kids who ended up driving in front of the Semi. And if they're not going to be there we shouldn't have to buy their lunches, as is the case for our underprivileged. No need to even more tax payer dollars.

It would work for somoe high schools, some it wouldn't. If you limit it to only juniors and seniors, or maybe just seniors it could work. It all depends on the school My high school had open lunch, but only for the juniors and seniors. But that was back in the 70's and times were a bit different. You wouuld have to have strict rules for those who don't come back on time. Many restaurants have restrictions on allowing students in during school hours. For instance, right by Pulaski, there is a Cousin's, Starbucks, Einstein Bagels and Noodles Inc. And Leon's is right there. I know that Cousin's has a student restriction. Not sure about the other places. If anyone wonders why all those places are right by a high school, they are also located by the police station and St. Luke's. St. Francis isi also nearby. There are a lot of workplaces in that vicinity. My daughter's high school is right by downtown and they get in trouble with security at Grand Avenue for being there. And the school had problems with kids tardiness and skipping after lunch. You have to know your students.

Teachermom has a good point. I had open lunch when I was in high school and it worked fine. You just need to make sure the restaurants in the area are willing to cooperate and let the students in for lunch.

Maybe have the students show their student IDs during lunch time.

Think of all the times you go out to lunch....how many times do YOU really want to go back to work?...Don't tempt them...school is as close to work structure as you can get...let's not tamper with that any further.
Besides we are already trying to keep them out of the malls on weekends why would we want to give them freedom for lunch??

No I don't think they should, In our climate today. 40 years ago, I never heard of Pot, or Drugs. Other then what you would get from the Doctor's. Our way of life have changed to much.

Oh, come on!!!! 40 years ago, there was DEFINITELY a problem with pot and drugs! 40 years ago was 1967, summmer of love, war protests, LSD and all that. The drug culture was in existence at that time. But One_provider has a point. If the malls want to restrict kids unsupervised, why let them go to the restaurants? Like I said, many of the places near Pulaski already don't allow students during school hours. And the temptation for skipping is too high.

Unless there is a problem with the students going why should they not be allowed in the mall at lunchtime? Not all teens cause trouble.

I think its a good idea. It teaches the kids responsibility and also gives them a little freedom. As long as they get to there next class on time it should work out good.
