The other day I was covering the unfortunate car crash in Waukesha, in which four teens were injured.

The car they were riding in turned in front of a huge semi. The kids were on a half hour lunch break from Waukesha West. They were all 17 years old--scheduled to graduate in just days.

I started talking with people who were standing around. An ATT worker was one of them. I asked him if he saw what had happened--no camera--just asking.

He said, "no comment". This ISN"T news. I said a group of kids were in that car, I think that's important. He replied, "this should not be on the news".

I told him I guess our jobs and perspectives differed. He gave me very dirty looks and walked away.

I know people are disheartened by a lot of what they see on the news. I also know many people take their feelings out on the nearest person in a catastrophic situation.

But, Mr. telephone guy:  I don't tell you how to hook up phone wires. Please don't tell me what is news.

I will take it into consideration, however, that you looked all of 26 years old.

*nods*
Sometimes, I do question some stories reported on, but I understand what is news to one, may or may not be to someone else.
However, it does get a bit repetitive to hear about all the shootings and now, the plane crash-esp. when there really isen't quite any new information to bring out.
I don't know, that's why I'm not in TV or Jorunalism. To each their own, but how some positive stuff now and again, hm? :)

So about 115 people die a day multiply that by 365 how is that news? How is it special. Going to affect us for years to come. Thats what I look for in news. The longeivity of news is important because what is news if not rpoblems and solutions changing our society. I say society meaning it must affect many people. We live in Milwaukee. It has to affect more then one high school and a handful of people to be news. Especially when its an every day occurence. News is recent events and this might be news compared to me throwing a party but it is not news compared to things like Scooter Libby going to Jail or huricane Katrina.

Demboy:
You need to start watching the National News. This is a Local News Channel. You can always change it.

Physical appearance On the average

I might just know who you spoke to... oh wait you said 26... maybe not.

As a parent, I like to know what's going on with other kids. An informed parent is a good parent. Although it is so sad what happened, I would apply that lesson to my son and say - hey, these kids had 1/2 hour for lunch and they were probably rushing. Those few extra minutes are not worth getting in an accident and risking their lives.

The national news is all covering Paris Hilton going to Jail they've got the same problem. Many don't have Cable. That leaves no National news channel here.

Local News could do a better job at reporting. That car crash wasn't news. But Bush starting a cold war over a defense shield in Europe is news. Get it?

The subject of "what is news" is very subjective. But, if you have children who drive or will drive someday, then a crash like this is an opportunity to speak with your kids about what can happen in an instant.

While news should not be a place to start a what could happen conversation with your kids. One of the most important part of news is that it is important.

Because this was an accident where four teens on lunch break were injured this report serves a purpose. It may tell other teens to slowdown and be cautious. It may make them think.

News is just what the word means. Something new that happens. There will always be people who question the importance of some stories because they feel it doesn't effect them.

You are a local news channel. You report on news that happens locally. When something major happens in world news that is reported also and usually as a lead in story. I don't see a problem here. Can't please all the people all the time.

I totally agree Julie. When I found out about that crash involving teens, it was the second one I heard about in recent weeks. I have my last child starting driver's education soon.

With the prevalence in the news, it certainly should send a huge message to parents that teens are not only misjudging the speed of these trucks as they pull out in front of them, but failing to recognize that these vehicles can't stop like a car can. Are they not being taught this in driver's education anymore? (By the way, I didn't know that kennyk aka tonguebath worked for ATT.)

I understand where you are coming from. It is useful for being a lesson but I think a local mews cahnnel for at least half the news should cover national news because the fact stil remains many don't have cable. There are so many important things going on outside of our town that affect us. As AJSB said the missle defense plan could lead to another cold war. When you compare it to a car crash they don't equal out.

If a local car crash is not considered news then what is? If I want national news I watch the national news or check the internet. I want to know what is going on locally. I want to know why 45 north is backed up. I want to know what happened down at the lake. I want to know why two idiots at GHS were fooling around and why one ended up in the hospital.

You do not need cable to watch national news. It is on regular tv as well as cable.

Centauri, could you define GHS for me? I obviously missed a piece of news that may have been important to me if it means what I think GHS does. (For the record, I am being serious.)

I'm a cable news person now and don't have much time to watch that either. I think the car crash WAS news and as such, properly reported on. However, the local media here, led by the Urinal/Sentinel is notorious for reporting things that are NOT news, but rather personal opinions and biases. Many in the local journalism profession use their resourses as a tool to promote their personal agendas, and that is simply wrong, not to mention unethical.

I think this is VERY MUCH a news story. For some reason tho, this makes me think of Arnold's wife Maria, who I've heard apparently recently called off a return to TV News because of all the hoopla the National News paid to, dare I mention the name, Anna Nicole Smith.....I guess she felt News had lost it's way.....

In many ways I guess that's the way I sometimes feel.....there's only so long you can carry a story and then it gets repetitive...cut away and go back to regular programming and if there's anything new...break back in.....wall to wall coverage of an event can get tiring....I found myself changing the channel away from the local channels during the plane accident because of the wall to wall coverage BECAUSE nothing new was being reported.....

fanning....now on that note I totally agree.
The "celebrity" news is so unimportant.
Why in the world do I care what these idiots are doing?
Tell me when they do something good.
I don't need their dirty laundry.

HI BLESSED!!! Yes, we do seem to be meeting often!!!
Have a blessed day!! haha

News has become more like entertainment now based on what people want to here and what is real stuff going on. That is the reason for Anna Nicole Smith. In a poll I believe it was Gallop it was found that people who watched the "daily show knew more3 about news then people who watched the 24 hour news channels.

I LOVE THE DAILY SHOW AND THE COLBERT REPORT!!

Oh man...don't get me started.

I so agree with what Al Gore stated to Jon Stewart. Even though they are comedy based shows, they show more of the real news then other news channels. They also break the news apart and have guests and skits that show us things we normally wouldn't see.

So, yeah.....I like your avatar Demboy. :)

I agree with Stewart and Colbert. Both use satire to point out real problems with the news like FOX and Mark Folley. At least someone sees that news is going downhill.
