Did anyone see the front page of Sunday's Chicago Tribune?

Right on the front page--a premier newspaper distributed internationally--the headline:

"MILWAUKEE FIGHTS A WAVE OF VIOLENCE"

The article details our city's trouble with violent crime. Since 2004, the article says, aggravated assaults are up a whopping 86 percent.

It doesn't note that Chicago's murder rate is far above Milwaukee's, as I understand it.

I know we've got a serious problem here, but I grew up here and I'm pro-Milwaukee. This kind of headline sort of disturbs me-- in terms of public perception.

I was going to do a local report on it, but switched to focus on the Virginia Tech incident.

I agree. It seems a lot of times that reports are one-sided, even if they aren't in the editorial section of the newspaper.

But yes, I think that the Virginia Tech story is more important than a city's jab.

My thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of the victims.

I moved from Chicago to Milwaukee to get away from the violence..granted that was 13 years ago and Milwaukee has changed but I wouldn't move back to Chicago for any reason. I still feel safer here than there.

Myra, I live smack dab in the middle of Milwaukee’s most dangerous, crime ridden neighborhood on the northside. There are more shootings, fights, robberies and home invasions in my community than anywhere else in the entire city. Crime in Milwaukee is dramatically increased and in my opinion Chicago and other surrounding states should indeed point out how our crime levels have increased. We should be shamed.

There are deep, complicated reasons why crime has increased in our city. Reasons that no one wants to say aloud. We talk about it among ourselves in huddled groups, or behind closed doors in our homes, but publicly no one wants to say the true root cause. I was brave enough to bring it up last year via an op-ed piece in the Journal Sentinel. I could not believe the response I received from that! I dared to say what we all think.

In my opinion until the people who are committing the crimes have a wake up call and realize that the way they are living isn’t working, nothing will change. And the local government can’t change that for them, MPS can’t change that, only they can. And as pessimistic as I may sound, I don’t think they will. It is going to get a lot worse before it gets better.

Both cities have some real slummy parts. But I'll bet Chicago has more bums. Every time I'm in Chicago I'm solicited for "spare change" 2x's on every block! It's rediculous.

Good point Myra. We need to keep in mind the stories that will be eclipsed by the VT tragedy.

Stories like Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez testifying before Congress about criminal actions he and his bosses committed by manipulating the justice system of our nation. Stories of how Paul Wolfowitz, besieged president of the World Bank, attempts to downplay his unethical and corrupt actions with his girlfriend... And locally, the growing story of Georgia Thompson and the actions of another prosecutor with links to the whitehouse that possibly spurred on her witch-hunt.

And not to be missed, the images of bloody victims in VT, make it obvious how missing the human faces of the tragedy in Iraq are. We don't see the suffering of the peoples of Iraq... not like we're seeing the people here...

As tragic as the VT massacre is, we must continue to report ALL the news that effects us all.

thanks Myra- good point.

Well the reason I moved from Milwaukee is that law enforcement is often uncooperative in doing anything to curb criminal activity. And between the measures of protecting the family and the taxes, it was too costly.

Milwaukee just needs some strong leadership in higher positions to try to bring it under control and that's pretty much in humor mode right now.

You have alderpersons taking more of a stand on crime than police chief Nan Hegerty. And when they do, you have her replying she wishes they would come to her first before going to the media because she already had a plan in the works. (Yeah right. Keep putting your foot in your mouth Nan. Not many people bought that one.)
