A Slice of Life

My son has had to do alot of projects for school this year and many of them included research.  I remember when I was in school, we were assigned a paper, then we went to the library and checked out books regarding our topic, read them, and then wrote a paper. Then we had to do a bibliogrophy at the end.

Well, my son has all these things he needs to get done and I find myself saying "just google it" The only actual book he used for this particular project was a cookbook of mine because part of his project is about the dinner table in Italy. My book is not only full of recipies, but every section has info about the region and the set up of the meal itself.

So now I find myself asking this question. How does he do a bibliogrophy when he used only websites? I am not sure how I feel about this type of research because there are many things out there that are not reliable, plus, instead of reading, they just punch in a few words and all they need to know is right in front of them. How is that research? But at the same time, I also find myself thinking that I wish it would have been that easy when I was in school.

So what are your thoughts on this? Would you rather have your child do some good old fashioned reading and research, or is this better?

My thoughts on this are simple to say, but might be difficult to into motion. I suggest that you ask your son to do atleast 1/2 of the report the old fashion way and the remainder to use the computer. This will give Him the bibliography that he will need for the report. As far as for accuracy, I have found that checking on "Snopes.com" you can check for accuracy on many subjects.
At the end of a report I always told my Children to make the statement of, "The accuracy in this report is correct to the best of my ability." That was never questioned by any of the teachers in the years that both of my Children wrote any research papers.

**Congratulations to you for your involvment in your Children's education, it is something that you won't regret. As Children appreciate the help even though they don't always say it.

Thanks Milmom! I love the projects and it is fun to look up all of the different things. But there is just so very much. But so far he has gotten so many cool things done because of it.
But, I just think there is alot to be said about just reading a book and being able to comprehend it. His reading scores are great, but still. Maybe I am just jealous that we had to work our butts off just to get a paper.

I never allow my kids to use the internet when assigned things like a book report. I make them buy the book and read it from cover to cover. They haven't ever brought home a grade under a "B". I just don't like shortcuts on homework. I also do not allow the use of calculators in my home. Too many people rely on machines to do their work for them.

While it is useful to bounce some things off of bloggers - in this case I feel the best person to ask would be your child's teacher and what is acceptable to the school.

I don't think having a child surf the net for any purpose is appropriate because of what may pop up on any given search.

If an adult does all the on line search for information - it teaches the child nothing about gathering information from reliable sources.

I am not opposed to getting information from reliable on line sources. The key is finding the reliable sources.

Also, there are way too many "sources" that have posted all the info on any given assignment a child may have, ready for any child to copy and paste!

I am all for the child doing the footwork because there is a valuable lesson in fact finding itself, compiling the info and putting all the pieces together.

There is a time and place where your child will be asked to do an exclusive on line research project which should be done on school PC's as they have all the blocks necessary for underage children.

Actually I wasn't looking for inut on my son's project, I was just looking for opinions on homework that involves use of the internet vs books.

Git, That is so true, but our kids are told to use calculators in class, and as for the projects, they were actually given websites to check out for info. I am sure that books are acceptable, but the thing is that when everyone else is taking advantage of the web and other things, that puts kids who do the reading instead at a disadvantage because they need to get so much info in so little time. My son has 7 subtopics that he needs to report on in two weeks. I mean it is cool and he has learned things that we never would have found in books, so I am still torn on what I think.

No, not input. Let me clarify.

Yes, you should ask the teachers how they feel about the use of internet vs. books and what is an acceptable means of gathering information is for your child.

Got it. Actually, they were givin websites to go to for info.

But even last year at our old school, they were told to google everything. Like I said before, I really don't know what to think. I mean it really isn't a huge deal, and I even learned some things in helping out with this one, but it just feels so weird to me.

Kind of like ordering a pizza. You call (or go online) choose your toppings, and it gets delivered straigt to your door.

On here, you type your word and all of the info gets delivered straight to your screen. Then you write your paper and make your visuals and so on. I guess it's neat.

What do kids do that don't have a computer at home? Not everyone does. I think it's called a book and there should be more focus on that then there is on the internet.

When my kids were attending Muskego schools (back befor I had a computer~about 10 years ago) the teachers told my kids that they either need to buy a computer, go to a public library, or fail the course...period.

That's BLEEP. Well I guess with taxes as high as they are in Muskego the schools should supply one to each household. It's just nutz! When my kids were little in kindergarten they finger painted, read stories, made projects and napped. Now they are on computers at 5-6 years old. Blows me away!

Considering that Muskego has 6 or 8 (I don't remember the number) plasma t.v.s in the cafeteria of the high school, they should have a computer lab in each of the schools for kids to work on such assignments during their lunch hour or free time. Those plasma t.v.s were a slap in the face to the taxpayers in that community. Just another way to show the rest of the state how foolish schools in the suburbs can be.

I have been in the cafeteria at Muskego and seen those TVs. I thought wow, they must have the bucks here. What do they do with those TVs anyway?

Not too much, the parents went on a rampage and complained about their monies being spent so foolishly and they made it so that the t.v.s can only be used on certain special school events.

Oh so now they wasted their money on the TVs and are not allowed to use them? To me that is like good china. It is there just so that you can say you have it, but don't touch it. Very silly to me.

Everything about Muskego is silly...that's why I got the H E L L out of there.

Well, I will keep that one off of my places to live. But we are so stuck. We love our School which is in South Milwaukee. We love our church which is near the North side of Milwaukee. My husband works in Waukegan, but because I am divorced, I can't move across state lines with the boy, plus I don't want to give up the school and church, oh and yes, the peditrician. Love him too. Hate the city I live in though. Gotta love it!

Well just for my two cents . . .
The internet seems to be a lot more specific, you can look up specific dates or times or people and get pages on them. Unfortunately, about 80% of it isn't reliable. So I do use books a lot too. We have a 15 page history paper due and 10 out of the 12 sources we cite in our bibliography have to be books.

(And it is possible to cite internet sources--there's a format for it--url, date accessed, date edited/created, author, etc).

I will say that when I do find a book it's like a pot of gold because of how specific it is--and that's what you need, specific people, places, times, events. So whenever I find those few books that have the information I need in them, it's really satisfying.

I am married to a great guy and a mom of three. Our kids are spread out in ages so we have one in preschool, one in first grade and one in his first year of middle school. We spend alot of time on soccer fields and in dance studios but I wouldn't trade that in for anything. My favorite day of the week is Sunday because that is family day. I also love Friday nights after the kids go to bed. We love to take long weekends just to get away. Usually we end up at waterparks, but we all love the water so it is great. I love to eat out. Without the kids is best, but we do go out for lunch as a family every Sunday. It is just our thing. I stay at home for the most part and spend my days working in my kids classrooms or just taking care of the every day things. I am here to meet other great people and moms like me.I write about my life because that is what I do. I love to share and while some people are all about politics or news.... My stage of life is all about me and my family. So most of my blogs are going to be just that. This year, we welcomed our very first foreign exchange student into our home. It has been both a challange and a blessing. I am happy to have him and practicing for when my own children get to be that age. I will admit that it is scary having a high school student as a child of mine because of the freedom I need to allow, but I am learning to let go and be watchful but not overbearing on him. This is going to be an interesting year..
