One of the benefits of working at Fox 6 is this: my desk is only a few feet away from local TV treasure Gus Gnorski.

I profit from the proximity.  Friday was a prime example.

Gus and I were discussing an idea for a news story, and somehow, the topic turned to cheese.

Conversations tend to do that here in Wisconsin.

But this wasn't just any cheese.  Gus told me about the fried, squeaky variety: the cheese curd.

Despite growing up less than two hours from Milwaukee, just across the Illinois state line, I had never tasted a cheese curd.  It's not part of the Prarie State pallete.

But, I learned, cheese curds are a staple of the Dairy State diet.  I'm told you can get them at fairs, local shops and some restaurants.

Gus gave a good pitch.  He said they're delectible little morsels of fresh cheese, with a warm rubbery texture, usually covered in a crisp beer batter.

"The good ones squeak when you bite them," he said.

So, my questions to the Milwaukee area blogosphere:

1) Where can you find the best cheese curds?

2) What goes good with a cheese curd?

Please share your suggestions with me and the rest of Fox 6's blog readers.

That's where you HAVE to go for the best deep-fried cheese curds, aaro-nf, bars and UpNort.
The ones at Culver's are not the real thing. It has to be squeaky cheese curds and a beer batter. Most restaurants use cheese chunks and a crumb batter and that's not the real thing.
We make them homemade with real fresh cheese curds and a good beer batter.
Mike, have you ever had the cheese curds that squeak?

I hear ya Loipav, there is a place in Stangleville, WI (Kewaunee county) where you can by all different types of cheese, but if you get there early enough in the morning, you can still get the cheese curds when they are warm, squeeky and yummy.

Also, I think I know what cheese factory your talking about on 141 (is it still called Frigo?) in Lena, we always stop there on our way to my Mother in-laws house.

Nothing compares with getting cheese straight from the factory or the farm!!
I took a road trip with a friend up to Clark County. That area is filled with dairies.
We had three coolers filled with award winning cheese and we met some of the nicest people.
The other nice part is the butter and cheese are cheaper and fresher than we get from the store.

Whoa... slow down! Have you all gone mad?

We first need to determine that Mr. Lowe has renounced his evil Illinois past before we allow him access to the best of our curds.

Once we're certain that his wardrobe is bereft of Bears apparel [*shudder*] and the Cubs stickers have been duly scraped from his bumpers, then (and ONLY then) might we consider him worthy of our curdled delights...
