We're working on a story about graffiti in West Allis for tonight's 10 p.m. broadcast.

The mayor of the city is getting ready to unveil a plan to target taggers. Meantime, business owners and residents are fed up with the image graffiti projects.

Municipalities around the country are coming up with ways to deal with the problems.  One town in New Jersey plans to fine the victims of graffiti if the fail to remove it within a certain period of time.

Is graffiti a problem in your neighborhood?  What is the best way to stop it?  Who should hold responsibility for its removal?

Fining the victim is not the answer. That is blaming the victim and victimizing twice. Providing proper security for property, especially at night when taggers are more active, is a better solution. Should we make taggers criminals? Tagging is defacing property that does not belong to them, so is that criminal damage to property or disorderly conduct?

I live in "old West Allis" and its funny this is posted I was about to make a post about this myself, kinda.
I have noticed tons of graffiti around my neighborhood now.
I walk my dog 2 times a day so picking up after her I learn the alleys rather well so I can dispose of her waste.
Its no surprise that the one really scuzzy, dirty block has the most graffiti.
Like desertwind stated fining the good people is kind of a slap in the face. They didn't ask to be tagged up. How about the city fining itself for not removing it off the power poles or stop signs? Maybe the city can allocate x amount of dollars for paint that is to be used by homeowners to cover graffiti, lord knows we are taxed heavy enough.
I do see plenty of police patrolling around at night and when I caught some guys breaking into my neighbors car they responded within 2 minutes easy. I can tell they are trying to clean this area of West Allis up, and it needs it.

welcome to the blogging family, mike_lowe. for who would be responsible for cleaning it up, if it would be a 10o or 12 year old, their parents would be held responsible for removing grafetti from where their kid sprayed it. great job on the posting of this blog.

Taggers should have to clean up all graffitti on the block when they are caught, not just their work, but everyone's. It will make them think twice before they tag again.

I like that idea, jazzbode! And while they are at it, they can pick up the garbage in the neighborhoods, rake the leaves, do all the manual labor that the city pays city workers to do. The city workers can run the vehicles and supervise.

I think they should fine the Alderman in charge of the district. That way something would actually get done to bring the problem to an end as they actually have the resources(police)to put toward ending the problem.
