Hot and Cold

So....I'm currently a Journalism major at Valparaiso University in Indiana. I have quickly realized that this is not the school for me. The easy thing to do would be to transfer back home to UWM. However, my parents have made it very clear that they do not want me to transfer. They have given me an ultimatum. If I transfer home to Milwaukee, they will provide NO financial assistance and I will NOT be able to live at home. As an only child, I have no one else to turn to for help or assistance. Applying for FAFSA has resulted in another blow. Because I am a dependent child and both of my parents are married and have jobs that do support the family, I was only offered $1700 from UWM. That is a start, but I cannot put myself through school with that amount alone. I am determined to move back home to the city that I've grown up in for almost 19 years. Milwaukee is my home. And this is my life. I don't want to load you with my sob story, but I am ready to drive my life in the direction of my choosing, not my parents'.  I believe education is very important, and UWM is a great school in a great community.

Can anyone help me? Should I wait? Or should I leave and be happy? My happiness comes at a price, my parents' sadness and disappointment. Are there any good scholarships for people who are ALREADY in school? PLEASE don't tell me about fastweb because it doesn't work. Everyone uses that site, which depletes my chances. Someone help! Are there any mothers out there with an opinion? Other college students? Fellow alumnus?

I switched schools at the demands of my parents, hated it, ended up dropping out and delaying my college education by many years - and I ended up paying for the remainder of my education myself anyway. Was it easy? NO. But I did it.

Is there anything that will make your current school do-able? A change of residence, joining a student group or club? You are at a good school. Try to hang in there. It IS easier when your parents help. And college is only four years of your entire life. And those four years go very quickly!

I transferred to UWM before my 4th year of college. I finished up there and was very happy with the journalism program there. You have to do what you feel is right for you. My parents couldn't help me out financially with college so I took out extra loans (SallieMae.com) to cover costs...

"Is there anything that will make your current school do-able?"
Honestly, no. I don't have a vehicle or any means of transportation, so I feel really trapped. I can't go catch a movie, go shopping, or just get away period. This is such a small town, and I miss the big city. And I'm not interested in any sororities.

"You're at a good school"
Everybody KEEPS saying that. My parents believe that it's not what you learn, it's the NAME of the school that matters. I feel like I'm some prized possession or trophy, and they just want to brag about what school I go to. They made me come to this school. What's so shameful about UWM?

"It's only four years of your life"
18-22 is very important to me, and I don't want my parents controlling it. They got to control 0-18. Now I want to live my own life, and I can't. :( I didn't want to come to this school. They made me.

"I took out extra loans..."
I'm so scared of high interest rates! But I guess that's what has to happen, right? Will I need a co-signer?

I know how it is. I haven't been to an out of state college, but I know about transfering out of one school to another. In 1996, I made a choice of leaving ITT Tech to go to MATC downtown. ITT at that time didn't have any of the basic skills areas to get me where I wanted to go in their Computer Aided Drafting Program. So I talked with my parents, and some church members that I wasn't satisfied with the program nor the school. So I ended up at MATC and used Financial Aid to cover the costs of books and tuition in their Printing and Publishing Program. And I was 19 pushing 20 years old then. When I enrolled in UW-Stout, I was offered Scholarships and Grants from the state to keep the costs in check, and I kept my grades up above 2.0 between 2002-2006. And plus I had 5 MLK scholarships to add up to my college tuition.

I learned a long time ago, and I'm sure everyone has done it, that you have to do what makes you happy. If Valparaiso is not the college for you, there is always other universities you can look into, like UWM. As a suggestion, look into other 4 year UW schools like Madison. If you're able. I feel your pain, but you'll find something that would benefit you!

I'm a Journalism & Mass Communications major at UWM. I plan to take Matt Lauer's job on the Today show in about 6 years. I also plan to have my own talk show and magazine.
