Hot and Cold

I'm an 18-year old college student who is seeking a bit more independence: my first car.

Has anyone who's ever purchased a used vehicle like to share that experience with me? How much is too much to pay? How much is not enough? How many miles is ideal on a used car? Which makes/models are best? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank You!

:)

When I look for a used vehicle I like to make sure it has under 40,000 miles on it.
I also try not to go more than 5 years old.
As far as ratings, the Hondas, Toyotas and Chevys have the highest ratings, but that depends on the model.
For instance...I was looking at Saturn Vues for a used vehicle, Saturn is GM and I trust GM, I found quite a few used ones from 2002 and up with less than 40,000 miles for around $14,000 or less.
It all depends on what you're looking for.
May I suggest checking out Carmax.com. They have a great selection and are in our area. They seem well-priced and they give inspection reports for free on all vehicles.
Good luck!!!!!

In my humble opinion and that of my mechanic, don't buy a Ford or Chrysler.

Always focus on the inside of the car versus the outside. Most people worry about how the car looks versus how the car runs. You don't want to be out of pocket trying to keep your car going especially in the winter months. Most people don't want a car that looks bad, but my first car looked horrible, but I loved it and it ran good until I let others drive it... But when make a choice my uncle looked under the hood and made sure it had a good motor and transmission.

Oh yeah, Don't buy from JD Byrider or don't have a ridiculous car note for your first car. Many first time car buyers make the mistake of purchasing a used vehicle and they end up get it repo'd because they have to pay to get it fixed and can't keep up with the high interest car notes... Just a word of advice.

I suggest looking at lots that are actual dealers. The corner lots often take unwanted cars from auctions. As to what brand, they are all good brands and everyone has a bias. I suggest going on carsoup.com or autotrader.com.

terriellzey55 is right jd byrider and those sort of dealers are going to only produce high interest rates. I have a very good friend who works for Ewald Automotive group. try www.ewaldauto.com a local family owned dealer and you can expect nothing but professionalism from these folks.

Also, in addition to checking out the cars, to see if they run good, get a history check on the car. I'm not kidding. You can get a history check on the car to see if it had violations, parts replaced and more. The best sites I found are Carfax.com and Autocheck.com

I have a 1999 Saturn SC1 I will sell for 4,600. I had the engine rebuilt, it has a 3 year or 36,000 mile waranty on it. I also had the transwmission rebuilt 2 years ago. I also had the brakes down in the summer. I originally bought it used 4 years ago.
