I saw in the paper today that PETA wants jockey Gabriel Saez suspended while the death of filly Eight Belles is investigated. As I'm sure you've heard, the horse had to be euthanized on the track Saturday after breaking both ankles during the Kentucky Derby. Despite the injury, Saez and Eight Belles earned the second place finish. It was an incredibly sad thing to watch, let alone experience.

So can you even imagine having this organization trying to blame you - the jockey - for the untimely death of the animal? And trying to take away your livelihood while staging some bogus investigation? Did I mention they want his winnings revoked as well? I've never been a professional jockey (necessary disclaimer) but I'd imagine that these folks have a very special and unique relationship with horses. One that is based on respect and loyalty and trust. But I could be wrong.

I'm all for the ethical treatment of animals - relatively speaking obviously since I wear leather and eat meat. But I think this situation is just another opportunistic, publicity stunt on the part of PETA. Attaching their position to the latest headline making story. They claim an investigation would determine if the jockey had any indication the filly was hurt before collapsing on the track. But even if that hunt comes up empty (if?) they're happy to take issue with the whipping of the horses mid-race.

Of course they are.

The letter to the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority also seeks a ban on whipping, limits on races and the age of racehorses, and a move to softer, artificial surfaces for all courses.

Aye yay yay. Does this annoy anyone else?

Jen-

I agree that PETA are very annoying. They are a very radical organization with messed up ideals. Calling for horses to stop being whipped in a race? I can tell you this much, a whip does not hurt a horse. If you hurt the horse, he will buck you off. I rode a horse and the saddle slipped down his back. He did not like that at all and he let me know. (I found myself sitting on the ground looking up at him.) Racing horses have been bred over the years to be faster. Unfortunately, this has also caused them to become more fragile. Was Eight Belles death sad? Yes. But having spent a lot of time around horses you come to realize that these racing horses are glass compared to the horses normal people ride. To think that these horses do not love to run and race is silly. If they wouldn't want to do it, they wouldn't. If my horse doesn't want to cross a tiny stream, he won't and there is no way to make him do it. (Tugging, pulling, bribing, begging... he won't budge.)

PETA should really get their priorities straight. PETA needs to realize that there are people out there who eat meat, wear leather and use animals for work. This country would not have survived if the Native Americans and the colonists had said "Gosh, those animals look tasty but killing hurts them so we will eat and wear plants."

Who should we listen to? Should we listen to the people who work with horses every day, who love them and train them and make them their number one priority? Or should we listen to the radical PETA who "liberates" thousands of mink from mink farms into the wild, only to have the

Nope, it doesn't annoy me at all. I am a proud supporter of the Humane Society and PETA. While PETA's measures may be extreme at least they are garnering attention from people who otherwise don't care about any animals other than their "pets."
Horse racing is selfish for humans. Yes, horses love to run. Then let them. Let them run in a field without a jockey whipping their hind end. Let them run without wearing blinders. Will they get hurt in a field? Maybe. But, not on national television where thousands of people, children included, are subjected to seeing it (and hearing it) played over and over.
God Bless Eight Belles.

In my opinion...PETA is nothing more than a bunch of self righteous nut jobs who need to find something better to do with their lives, along with Greenpeace. Part of God's Covenant with Noah was that man would have dominion over all animals. That means racing them, whipping them, wearing them, and eating them.

Southern Belle-

The al Queda's measures are extreme and garnering attention. I suppose you support them as well?

PETA are nothing more than a bunch of terrorists. They sabotage and destroy to get their way. They ignore the rights of others to get their selfish views across.

If you love animals, why would you let captive, human fed animals out into the wild where they die of starvation?

Why would you throw red paint onto fur coats, rendering them useless to the owner and dishonoring the beautiful animals that gave their lives up for the coat?

So you don't agree, that's nice. What makes your right? Why can't the rest of us express our views as well?

No, I don't support Al Queda, that's ridiculous.

You are right...everyone CAN express their views. Did I say anyone couldn't? I think I very respectfully presented my case.

Thank you for attacking me.

When people advocate violence, they lose their right to an opinion.

I have no idea to what violence you are referring.

I simply try to help the animals and do what is right for them as they can not speak for themselves.

You want to see violence? Go visit a factory farm and watch how they kill animals that will be on your dinner plate tonight.

I'm not sure why you are arguing with me. I accept your opinion, why can't you accept mine? What about your other blog where you said all opinions accepted? Pot meet the kettle.

Have a great day.

PETA Extreme = violence

(FYI- the animals are killed in a quick and humane way. I have visited the farms and it quick and painless.)

Just to be very, very, clear, when I said:

YOU...........GO...........GIRL!!

I was specifically soley referring to Ms. Lada.

I would also add, that if I were not happily married (which I am), an attractive young lady like Ms. Lada, who LIKES/LOVES sports, has a very rational view of PETA and enjoys meat and leather.........well, I would say she seems almost too good to be true!

Just one mans opinion...................

I would also say (back on topic) that no one is for the "inhumane" treatment of animals. What is considered humane/inhumane becomes quite subjective.

PETA Is a crock, and if you're a true lover of animals you WOULDN'T support them.

1. They support The use of humiliating and hurting people, even resorting to violence or threats of violence to "Get their point across."

2. It has been proven time and again that donations to PETA does not go to helping animals.

They spend their money on multi million dollar attack ads, billboards, commercials, web development, and to pay spokespeople to speak on their behalf.

(While some claim they volunteer their time, that time does come at a price. Past documents have shown just how much it costs to get a celeb to "volunteer".)

Very little money actually goes to helping animals compared to humane societies like the ASPCA.

Animals that could use that money die everyday at shelters because they don't have the funds to care for them long term. Instead of spreading the money where its needed, PETA chooses to spend that money on Getting Pam Anderson to pose nude.

During the last superbowl in fact... PETA had a commercial they were willing to pay $4.2 million to have aired during the game, targeting Kentucky Fried Chicken.

FOUR POINT TWO MILLION DOLLARS.

$100 would save 2 dogs and a cat from Euthanasia... Feed a shelter for a week... and buy new toys and blankets.

Can you imagine the good 4.2 MILLION bucks would do at a shelter or spread around several shelters in the nation?

instead they want to make commercials and pay to have them aired.

Your donations at work. Commercials to talk about the disgust of KFC, while hundreds of animals are being euthanised at shelters that can't afford to care for them.

Way to go PETA. Great way to prioritize.

This is actually a good article.

http://www.renewamerica.us/columns/tabor/050622

PETA can't even dispute many of these facts, because a lot of these facts came from PETA's own documents.

Not to say other animal causes don't have their issues... but having spent time at local Shelters in Wisconsin and Michigan, I can tell you they do a lot more with small donations to help animals, than PETA does with their multi-million dollar organization.

True animal lovers support local shelters... not places like PETA.

Aravynandrea~

Thanks for the info. I had read that article before and was unable to find PETA reports to dispute them. I do not donate money to PETA but to the Ozaukee Humane Society. I have looked into volunteering there this summer when my job slows down a bit.
Speaking of humiliating people though, I felt like I was immediately attacked on this board. I can understand everyone's concerns; especially when presented respectfully. My concerns are for the animals. Period. One mention of PETA and all of the sudden I'm also an Al Queda supporter and advocating violence.
Again, I appreciate your information. It was very helpful for me.

Unfortunately, as a supporter of PETA you'll get that. I can't say I feel bad for PETA supporters. You were verbally "attacked" (Though I really don't look at it that way. JoJO has a point)

A friend of mine was physically assulted by a PETA member because her coat LOOKED like it had fur trim, even though a blind man could see that it wasn't even Faux fur. It was a cotton fiber. She needed 3 stitches.

They want fair and humane treatment for animals, yet they kill more animals in a week than 5 humane shelters combined in a year.

And they assult, humiliate and attack people. How does that help do anything for their cause other than make them look like nut cases?

they spend money on commercials that never air and bilboards that are removed because they voilate privacy acts (Like using pictures of Prostate cancer survivors without their permission... saying "Got Milk" as if Milk is the only link to prostate cancer.)

What's sad is... when you hear "Animal rights" people think PETA. And when people think PETA, they think extremist nut cases who are off their rocker, and ignore them.

That doesn't help the cause for humane treatment of animals. Not 1 ioda.

Not to mention, look at this statistic consumer affairs came up with about donations.

If you give $100 to your local humane shelter - Between $80 and $100 goes to humane wellness whether its buying food, blankets, making pamphlets about Animal Awareness, cleaning supplies, and help suplement the pay for workers to keep the society functioning.

You pay PETA $100... $1-10 goes to animal care. IF that. Most of their money goes into Euthanasia and animal disposal, commercials, billboards, paid celebrity sponsorship... so on.

here are more good sites you should look at.

http://www.petakillsanimals.com/

http://www.consumerfreedom.com/news_detail.cfm/headline
/3045 (This one is a good one about the murder of 30 adoptable dogs by PETA)

http://www.petakillsanimals.com/petaTrial2.cfm (Prosecution's evidence in the case of PETA's animal cruelty case... WARNING Graphic images of euthanised animals at the hands of PETA.) The workers who did this did this at PETAs request... and are rumored to still work for PETA

Still think PETA loves animals and believes in Animal rights?

Basically, when PETA gets involved in Animal rights... its only well publicized cases. They're media hounds. Sad thing is, they don't spread the word, they do the opposite. PETA gives real animal welfare supporters a bad name, and no one takes us seriously because of them.

http://thoughtsfurpaws.com/dogs/peta-kills-pets/ Pay attention to this line... PETA employees even admitted on the stand that the group frequently kills animals. How frequently? Well in 2006 the group took in over 3,000 ani

Continued where it stopped....

--------------------------

Well in 2006 the group took in over 3,000 animals. Only 12 were adopted out.

There was another website were PETA activists were quoted as saying, they'd prefer animals to go extinct before they're made into pets. However, I can't remember what site I saw that on.
