I knew it was windy... ridiculously windy. Windy enough to practically knock me over while running errands. Windy enough to make it rain horizontal. I knew it was windy.

But it never occured to me that the wind - the ridiculous wind - would be capable of pushing our gate open. Dumb. It wouldn't have been a big deal except our dogs were in the backyard. WERE.....

I was about 46 seconds from hopping into the shower when I heard brakes screech, a collision and a horrible prolonged yelp. "Did you hear that? I asked my husband. Instinctively, I sprinted downstairs only to find a frantic driver who'd abandoned her vehicle and was running towards me. "Is that your dog?" she shouted pointing to a heap of fur that only slighty resembled my dog. I screamed! It was.

We rushed Wrigley to the vet. Tears. X-rays. Heart-wrenching yelping. Waiting. More X-rays. More tears. Seditives. Brochures. Broken Pelvis. A few bruises and cuts. Could be much much worse.

So now I'm typing with one hand while my other strokes my heavily sedated/medicated puppy. They say he should be alright with a lot of TLC. I feel awful. I should have known better. The wind was ridiculous, afterall.

I am glad your dog is ok. I have bungee cords wrapped around both of my gates as a precaution.

I'm so sorry to read about your poor puppy!!! My thoughts and prayers to you both.

I have a puppy that will be a year old on Thursday, and the worst she has seen so far was her operation to be spayed...and I felt so guilty for puting her through that!!!

Don't beat yourself up, he's not blaming you, he's just happy you're there to take care of him and smother him with love!!!

Jen, the same thing happened to my neighbor's puppy a month back and it's amazing how quick they recover, and don't be so hard on yourself...everyone learns from their oversights.

Centauri, I have bolts that lock into posts about 4 inches, but I think the bungee cords offers a great additional insurance. Thanks for the excellent idea!

Jen -

This made my heart sink. I'm glad to hear that Wrigley's gonna be OK.

And thank you for sharing this...I am going to put safety latches on my gates this weekend. I would never have even thought of it.

Jen,
I hope your pooch will be ok!
Lots of TLC and I'm sure he'll be alright.
I don't have a fenced in yard and my dog is blind from his diabetes so I go out w/him and keep a very close eye on him.
Wrigley?
You're not a Cubs fan, are you?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I might have to start watching another sports cast if THAT is the case!
LOL!!!

Jen, glad to hear your puppy is going to be alright. IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT!! Give him as much and attention as he needs. The good thing about puppys is that thier love is unconditional. Good Luck!

Thank you so much to everyone for your kind words and thoughts... I do have a puppy update:

After a very rough, sleepless night (for all of us) highlighted with puppy cries and capped off with Wrigs staring off into space for a while, we brought him to the Animal Hospital off Silver Spring.

The docs said surgery was a must since the pelvis is broken in four places including in weight bearing bones. Trouble is even if they do the surgery, the docs couldn't guarantee he wouldn't suffer nerve damage to his hind legs. Not to mention, it's expected to run between 3500 and 5000 for the surgery. Yikes!

However, since the other option was to put him down (which I couldn't try to consider) Wrigs is having major surgery sometime tonight. Please keep my pup in your thoughts! He's such a tough, happy, caring little guy and I'll be devastated if he doesn't make it through.

Thanks again!

Oh Jen......my heart goes out to you! Our pups are a part of our family, and when anything happens to them it can be devastating. Just try not to blame yourself......it's not like you did it on purpose.
Keep us updated on how he's doing!

Maybe had you named him "Miller" instead of "Wrigley" none of his would've happened?
(Just kidding, trying to lighten the mood and hopefully bring you a smile.)
Let us know if you do any fund raising for your cause.

Oh, Jen, that's awful but I'm happy he survived. My husband and I lost our dog (hit by a car that didn't even stop) one week after moving to Wisconsin. I thought I'd never get over it. We now have 2 dogs. One of whom broke his leg as a pup and we spent thousands on! But, he was just a baby...well worth every $$. I hope your dog will be ok.

Oh Jen, I'm so sorry.

I'm praying for you and your husband and Wrig!

It'll all work out, dogs are absolutely amazing when it comes to coping with stuff like that.

And if TLC's gonna make him better, he'll be better within the week! : )

I'll keep him in my prayers tonight. Good luck and God Bless!

I'm the newest face in the FOX 6 sports department... and I love tapping out little sports blogs to inform, entertain and encourage conversation. I'll be on the desk this fall for the High School Blitz (Fridays @ 10:20pm), the Saturday sportscasts (6, 9 & 10) and joining the veterans every Sunday for the Fox Six Blitz! Most other days, you can find me bouncing around Milwaukee's sport scenes working on feature reporting. Got an opinion? We've got the perfect place to share them! Blog away! You know we will!
