A major pet peeve of mine...

 ...plastic garbage bags!

I can't think of anything good about them.  They are too small. They rip. They're seen around town in trees, against fences, flying across roads.  They empty themselves all over the trunk of my car.  It takes twice as many plastic bags as paper bags to hold the same amount of groceries.  When I say 'paper' the bagger usually seems bothered.

My son was a bagger for a while and confirmed my suspicion...that baggers like plastic better because it's 'easier.'  Oh well. For me it's paper all the way! KTmke

I can see good in both...
Plastic bags can be used for a dirty disposable diaper....

Paper make great book covers for back to school...

I heard once from someone that you should beware of the brown bags due to cockroaches breeding in them. Whether or not that's true--I wouldn't want to risk it.

But I will say that at Walmart they give you too many plastic bags. They put only 2-3 things in each bag and spin the little spinner for you to catch it. I find that I can buy 20 things and end up with 10 bags.

every time you get plastic bage, why not use them in your bathroom as garbage bags. that would save you $ on small garbage bags for the bathroom. put them to good use. do not throw them out. they are perfect for small garbage cans in the bathroom. every time my mother gets grocries, she always gets plastic bags. try using them in the bathroom as garbage bags. you will like that very much. i guarentee it. so, give it a try.

I use the plastic ones for doggie bags - we even use the newspaper ones. I mainly get them from others for donations. I usually get paper bags. I use them for yard waste (why pay to advertise by buying them at Home Depot or Ace Hardware) I also use paper when baking cookies. I put the cookies on the paper bag to cool. Then a lot of the grease is off the cookie and onto the paper bag!

I double up the plastic bags to scoop cat litter on a daily basis, so I would definately miss them if they stopped using them.

Plastic Bags all the way for me. After I do my shopping from Walmart or Walgreens, I use them for bagging old newspapers, plastic, and aluminum cans in order to carry them to the recycling bin. And for my wastebasket in my bathroom and picking up pet waste before cutting the grass. Furthermore, I store up new plastic bags to be used for other duties around the house.

I prefer plastic as well, and utilize them for most of the duties mentioned above. I also found if I double the bags the handles of the bags fit perfectly over the arm rests between the bucket seats in my van. This provides a great litter bag.

the ONLY positive I see in plastic bags is when it comes to frozen foods. Sometimes the paper bags rip from the moisture.

But, I would have to say that bringing your own canvas bag is the "ideal." of course... I understand this is more difficult when you're buying groceries for an entire family and have more than $100 in groceries. But, if you're just getting a few things...why not bring your own bag?

I work at a grocery store. We have some customers who bring canvas bags, which work great, except they get heavy. My store wants to to bag in plastic when possible, so they just got rid of most of our paper bags, including the ones with handles. Now people want us to bag paper inside plastic so they have handles. Now we end up using 2 bags for every one before. We still have standard paper bags, but they really want us to use plastic because they are cheaper. I find ways to reuse them at home, and occasionally drop off extras at places that take them for recycling (Walmarts)

By the way folks, you are not entitled to pick up an extra paper bag to take home with no groceries in. We have to pay for them too...so if you want extra, we will charge you for them.

I find the plastic bags quite useful.
I use them in garbage cans, for picking up doggy poop and for when I have to take things to school, work or to a friend.
Years ago , when I worked at a grocery store, we had one bagger that would ask , "choke a bird or kill a tree", instead of the usual "paper or plastic" question.

I prefer plastic because I reuse them. They're great for small trash liners, scooping up cat poo, and I use them for lunch bags. Paper is bulky, and tears too easily.

I used to like Randall's grocery store here - they not only gave you paper or plastic, but cardboard boxes as well (you had to pay extra). We always reused those.

However, I keep the plastic bags around to use them as lunch bags or bathroom garbages, etc. I don't have any major preference - as long as you reuse them, does it matter? Wal-Mart has boxes to recollect the plastic bags at the store.

I think all stores could learn a few things from ALDI's policies. You buy your bags no matter if you choose paper or plastic. This encougages people to bring them back with them for their next purchase. Also having to put a quarter into the cart to use it requires you to return it to the right place to get your quarter back! No more carts all over the parking lots.
