You played.  We cheered.  You retired.  We cried.  You rode off into the sunset a hero.  I understand you have "the itch" to play.  But, please... don't scratch.

This is Aaron's team now.

Your legend is at stake.

Are the Packers a Super Bowl team with a quarterback (Rodgers) who has never played three consecutive quarters without getting injured?

The Packers management need Favre more than they want to let on.

Bryan_Polcyn i agree with you wholeheartedly. Sports is a buisness. The Love of the game is calling Farve back. This just reminds me of the Michael Jordan "comeback".....he'll scratch the Legend too. It'll stay intact, but this might be painful to watch.

Good Luck Favre. If you really want to play, i don't think Ted, the National Guard, or a thousand Bears or Cowboys can stop you.

"This is Aaron's team"

Give Rodgers a chance. If the Packers had listened to fans back in the day do you really think Farve would have been allowed to stay as long as he did? I love the selective memories here.

Two words for you. FARVE RETIRED! Get over it. If you were true Packers fans you would support the team. Farve is a great quarterback but he got tired. Lets say a few games in and he gets wild and the tiredness shows. All who support him would turn and blast the Packers for not playing Rodgers more. It happened last year (those of you without selective memories will remember that).

Farve is not a guarantee of a Superbowl. Last year proved that. Now stop looking with rose colored glasses. Let the man retire with a little dignity and not be one of those sports heroes who cannot say goodbye then comes back and taints his memory. Let him go!

Maybe the media should stop jumping on his every word.
I am sure he has the itch. He devoted his life to playing. It doesn't mean he's going to scratch it.
I will give Rodgers a chance. We've seen him play and know his injury record. He has a lot to prove. It isn't even fair comparing him to Brett. It's like apples and oranges.

Everyone loves to blame "the media" for jumping at Favre's every word. The media is doing what it has to do. When Favre hints at coming back, it's an unavoidable story.

Brett Favre is a very smart man. He doesn't drop hints to Chris Mortensen of ESPN by accident. He KNOWS what will happen. He may say "it's all rumor," but he's 100% responsible for it. And he knows it. This is intended to put pressure on Ted Thompson.

I'm not surprised Brett has the itch to play. He predicted as much at his tearful goodbye news conference. But there's a difference between getting the itch and acting on it.

Michael Jordan left the NBA on the perfect shot after his 6th championship. Then there was that dreadful Wizards experiment.

Favre left on an interception. However, he also dragged Packer Nation through a virtual funeral. He laid himself to rest. We paid our respects. We mourned his departure from football.

To think that was all just a mirage is hard to swallow. There is a time to move on.

Brett knows the media will jump on it and this causes the stir amongst fans.
Now it's gone from "he has an itch" to Ted Thompson rejected him.
If he plays, he plays. If he doesn't, he doesn't.
Anyone who has ever played a sport will tell you it's hard to stop after years of playing.

Brett may come back as an assistant coach or as a consultant. Football, unfortunately, is a young man's sport. I think Brett knows that.

I always thought that would be cool, desert.
He would make a great coach, just like his father.
Brett knows it's a young man's game. It just isn't easy to take that.
Even after I had my knee surgery from torn cartiladge I still tried to play softball. I was 34 at the time and thought I still could. I was very competitive and had played for 20 years. The first time back on the field I caught a hard linedrive and broke my thumb. I knew then my time had come.
Why can't Brett be human? Maybe we're just to used to him being more than that.

Ted Thompson is out of order for real about that comment he made that we all heard.

"HE DOESN'T WANT BRETT FAVRE BACK"! Has he lost his mind? Now I see why people said Ted Thompson needs to go somewhere else. That comment was just real bogus and total disrespect for Brett Favre, his former teammates, and the fans as well.

I will admit and we all heard this too, Brett Favre did say he didn't have no plans to do anything after his retirement and he hasn't done anything since 4 months ago.

Just because he's on the Reserve Retirement list doesn't mean he can't come out of retirement. He can come back if he want to. Let's not forget, the man has 2 years left on his contract and if he wants to play one more year or go ahead and finish up those last 2 years on his contract and then call it quits then I say "he should go for it and I'm behind him on it 100%.

Now, don't get me wrong, your body can only take so much in any sport you play and when it starts taking its toll on your back, arms, hands, legs, knees, and feet then it is time to call it quits eventually.

I'm quite sure he does has the itch and his family is behind him and like his mom said yesterday, "it was a shock and surprise to her because she didn't know anything about it till the last minute".

Whatever Favre wants to do, they need to just let him do it. That is his decision to make. There is cats in their 40s who are still playing pro basketball and pro football as we speak.

Ted Thompson has lost his mind for his remarks. If Brett does come back, it doesn't mean he will be a starting Quarterback. He would just be a second or third reserve to help out. Being a backup Quarterback wouldn't be all that bad for him, as long as he gets some play time on the gridiron, then who cares.

And Bryan, Michael Jordan wasn't all that bad with the Wizards when he came back in 2001. At least we still knew he had some kind of game left in him still.

If the retired #4 can find some way to "UNSTITCH THE ITCH" and knows what he feel what he should do best, then he knows what he has to do, it's just that simple for him.

Antoine, you know how much I love your posts. (How's the new job, by the way?)

But, I don't want Favre back at this point. Don't get me wrong - he's probably the greateast, toughest, most likeable quarterback to ever play in the NFL. But what I love even more is that he left the game on top.

Why mess with the perfect legacy?

Bryan_Polcyn, you nailed this!

Favre is very media saavy, as was MJ. The media will make Ted to be "bad guy", that's a given, the sacrifice will be Thompson's job, and Brett will be the saint.

Perfect script Brett. I just hope F0x6 doesn't give you the around the clock coverage you deserved going out.....coming back into the game. I will cry with you once but not twice.

Thanks. That comment means a lot to me (as for the new job I didn't stay around long, we weren't on the same page, I'll tell you what happened in an e-mail and what I'm doing to correct myself)

Hey, I don't blame you for not wanting him back. There are some people who feel that way too. I mean, he did break every NFL Record you can think of (number 1 in everything). He did leave out on top and I can agree to that...

Perfect Legacy? Every record, every football field you played in, every city and state you went to, every foundation you helped out for kids, it just doesn't get any more better and greater than what Brett Favre has done for those last 17 years in the league.

Michael Jordan, Brett Favre, Mark McGuire, Stone Cold Steve Austin, etc...It Doesn't Matter.

Can I ask you a question? If you were in Brett Favre's shoes, would you stay retired or would you be doing the exact same thing he is doing, feeling what he's feeling, and going through what he is going through as well?

I would be feeling the itch because that's what his life has always been.
When someone retires after decades of doing something and, being dedicated to it, it's hard to change your life. It's almost like a divorce. The lifestyle you're used to is gone.

hi bryan_polcyn::::
thanks for the post. my question is if who would be the starter if rodgers gets hurt? i believe in my mind that favre would not accept a backup role with the packers and i even mentioned this on another post from another blogger. i have read on the bottom of the screen on WIWB-CW14 OUT OF GREEN BAY(fdl service area channel 13), and it said that he is denying the rumors and so are the packers. as always, great job on the posting of this blog.
anyway, one quick question i have for you, bryan_polcyn is this: what did scottie baldwin get sentenced to in the witness intimidation case you had on the news earlier in the year. i would like to hear from you on that question. thanks.

KB you right. It is hard to give something up that you love so much. If #4 wants to come back, that's all good. Brett and Football go together like chips and salsa. One thing is certain, he's still got game.

If I was in Brett's shoes, I would've been more careful before I called a news conference and announced I'm done. He put us through the Favre Funeral. If I were him, I would've waited (again) to make the call.

Otherwise, I'd accept that my playing days are done. (Then again, that's easy for me to say - isn't it?).

Okay, so there is an "I" in I-Team. But don't be fooled. There's more Team than meets the eye. There are my producers, Patrick McCraney and Jennifer Schwarz. Our extraordinary editor, Dave Michuda. And then there are some of the best photojournalists in the business. As for me, I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri (Pattonville High School). I got my bachelors degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. And I've worked in both radio and television in Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin. In fact, I met a Wisconsin girl while working in Des Moines. We got married in the spring of 2000, moved to Kansas City, and four years later, she brought me home. We have two of the cutest kids on earth, plus two cats that give our Dyson a workout. I love snow skiing, soccer, Texas Hold 'Em, the St. Louis Cardinals, and ice cold beer (not necessarily in that order). I have a passion for my work. But there is no greater joy in my life than being a dad. Subscribe to my blog and you'll get an email everytime I add a new post.
