I still remember the first time my wife turned on our "audio" baby monitor in Kansas City, and we heard our next door neighbor gossiping on a cordless phone.  It gave me a knot in my stomach, but I was too embarrassed to tell her.  We just switched channels from A to B.

But, there's something even more disturbing about SEEING inside someone's home.  So, I was absolutely floored when my producer told me that the wireless device we were testing for an investigation was picking up a nanny cam -- with a baby in his playpen.

Check out our page and watch the story.  What this little $100 device can do is astounding... and more than a little unnerving.

Do YOU have a wireless video camera?  Are you sure it's secure?

The best way to make sure your wireless camera is safe from this is to purchase one that can be coded. The cheaper models can be picked up easily. It's best to purchase a camera system from a dealer and have it professionally installed so that your system can be set for you. It costs a lot more, but in the end you are more secure.

If you think about it, it is the same with your wireless computers. Anyone can tap in, if you don't have a coded system.

Good reporting and good comment Kat... (wondering why you are so smart about this) - :)

Not to say that this is a bad thing for what I'm about to say, but it looked pretty cool for a camera to be in a car on your dashboard.

Anyways, for those wireless cameras, think of it as like a walkie-talkie or a CB radio. What do those have in common with a wireless camera? They pick up "INTERFERENCE" (except there is no PTT Button on a wireless camera) and good thing there isn't.

I must agree and admit that seeing that in plain sight through a camera was offly disturbing, even if you don't even know which houses has nanny cams. Store Security Cameras, I don't know about those, but it depends on where the cameras are located in these stores. Like if they have a camera behind a cash register or in a backroom or wherever, then it depends on how disgusted it makes you feel whether if the situation is a good thing or bad thing.

Let me ask you all a question: I know things like that happen, and not on purpose or intentionally, but do you think these cameras say in particular like the exact one you bought Bryan, could be used in a good way without privacy being invaded into homes, but more into like businesses when stores are being broken into or robbed?

There's nothing in the law that says you can't have a wireless camera in a car and the Chief and the Mayor and the Aldermen are always talking about people in all communities everywhere to get involve to help find bad guys and any suspicious criminal activity and help keep the city and communities much more safe and I think maybe something like that can help big time. What do you all think?

It may sound stupid from me, but anything can happen for a good reason and good cause.

privacy? hmmpf, there is no such thing as real privacy anymore in this high tech age. Privacy is an illusion.

Okay, so there is an "I" in I-Team. But don't be fooled. There's more Team than meets the eye. There are my producers, Patrick McCraney and Jennifer Schwarz. Our extraordinary editor, Dave Michuda. And then there are some of the best photojournalists in the business. As for me, I was born and raised in St. Louis, Missouri (Pattonville High School). I got my bachelors degree from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. And I've worked in both radio and television in Missouri, Iowa, and Wisconsin. In fact, I met a Wisconsin girl while working in Des Moines. We got married in the spring of 2000, moved to Kansas City, and four years later, she brought me home. We have two of the cutest kids on earth, plus two cats that give our Dyson a workout. I love snow skiing, soccer, Texas Hold 'Em, the St. Louis Cardinals, and ice cold beer (not necessarily in that order). I have a passion for my work. But there is no greater joy in my life than being a dad. Subscribe to my blog and you'll get an email everytime I add a new post.
