Brad Hicks' Blog

When I'm out on my bike rides the last few days, I've noticed a lot of turtles on the roads.  I guess the flooding forced them from their ponds.

Poor little fellers don't stand much of a chance once they hit the road-- seen lots of squished ones too.

My back yard is along the Fox River in Big Bend and the last few days I must have counted 20 frogs, 10 turtles and now I have ducks swimming back there. I can deal with those creatures but not the snakes that are popping out of nowhere. Creepy! I also have huge carp flopping onto the grass. They are EVERYWHERE! My grand kids are having a ball over here with their fishing poles even though they haven't caught much. Our road is also closed due to the flooding and there are tons of people down there with kids and dogs swimming. Did you ever hear of swimming in the road? First time in 15 years of living here that this has happened.

Have you ever had snapping turtle ?? Very tasty. When I was a kid it was my job to help my Grandmother clean the turtles that my Father and Uncles caught. Then as I got older my Grandmother passed the job to me. It was like another notch towards being able to sit at the grown up table.

My dad actually mentioned that he'd seen one on a minor highway the other evening. He pulled over and saw another woman doing the same thing. They ran out and got it during a break in traffic and she said that she had a pond in her backyard, so she took it home. Happy ending, at least for that turtle.

Lovin...I know how you feel. My yard is even more full lately when the river rose. We never hit flood levels really. The Fox River really caused some problems. I hope you're doing ok.

Kudos to your dad and the lady, Pinks. It never hurts to help. I can fully understand not being able to see the turtles at night or during a storm. It's very kind of them to stop and give the little creatures a helping hand.

Get behind them and stamp your feet to get them off the road. Watch for snapping turtles - do not get too close to them and certainly do not pick them up! Find a long stick and prod them gently to the side of the road. And thank you!

I had 2 mud-turtles for a few years when I lived in Muskego...unfortunately, some pathetic excuse for a human being stole them. They were in a 50 gallon pond that I made and were hand-tamed to eat right out of my hand. They ate bologna and potroast, or whatever I decided to feed them.
Last week, my husband found another walking across the street in Muskego and he brought it home to me after an arguement. Most women get candy and flowers, I get turtles!

Children don't understand that many turtles carry a host of health problems & it is not uncommon for a turtle to be able to snap a 1/2" - 1" branch with their powerful jaws. What do you think will happen to someone's finger or nose when it is too close to a turtle? Please tell the kids to be carefull. If you have to pick up a turtle; pick it up by its shell with gloves because of their sharp claws.

In addition to campaigning to save the rain forest, there can be a campaign started to save the turtles.

FOX 6 Anchor/Reporter: Thanks for visiting my bio page. You must be a curious person, so we already have something in common. Mix your curiosity with a passion for detail, a love for people, and a hunger for adrenaline, and you have the recipe for a news person! I grew up (although some people would disagree with that) in Palo Alto, California. While pursuing my Ph.D. in Geography at Texas A&M, I decided to explore the wild and wacky world of television news. I was hooked. My journey has taken me to the South (Atlanta), the Northeast (Lancaster/Harrisburg PA), the West (the San Francisco Bay Area), and now the Midwest. Over the years, I have been fortunate to have my work earn national awards from NBC News, the U.S. Coast Guard, and The National Water Safety Congress, as well as multiple Emmy Awards, and awards from the Associated Press. While I was working in Pennsylvania, the 6pm newscast I anchored became the highest rated top-50 market evening newscast in the country. The biggest honor, however, is knowing that you are watching. I take very seriously the responsibility we have to bring you accurate and up-to-the-minute information. Covering the news for you is not just a job; it's a privilege. Now some trivial tidbits you would never know about me if I didn't tell you: *I was once attacked by wild dogs in India and underwent rabies treatment. *As a graduate student, I published an academic paper that provided the first evidence Native Americans domesticated the California Fan Palm (Washingtonia Filifera). *My Grandfather, Robert T. Frederick, was the youngest and most wounded General in WWII. He created a unit called the First Special Service Force, a precursor to today's Special Forces. Winston Churchill called him "the greatest fighting General of all time", and actor William Holden portrayed him in the movie "The Devil's Brigade". *I feel deeply fortunate to live in this great country, and I am quietly indebted to every war vet who has risked his or her life for the freedoms we all enjoy. Be sure to check out my video bio and my blog, and if you're still curious, or you have a story you would like me explore, please give me a buzz at the TV station. I will take your call, because I'm curious too!
