O.K. Microsoft's long-awaited move from Windows XP to Vista is now here!

Two weeks, I was looking for an excuse to buy a new laptop. Mind you, there is nothing wrong with my six year old HP laptop -- a machine I turn on and remain online hours every day.

I was concerned my Pentium 4, 2.4 with 1 gig of RAM might be too slow and old for Vista.

So I went to the Microsoft Vista Update Advisor page -- and found a downloadable program that will scan your oomputer and let you know if your current machine is fast enough and has enough memory.

I lucked out and just have enough RAM (i gig) and Pentium 4 to run the very basic version of Vista Home.

Bottom line -- I can hold off investing in a new laptop for the next several months. Maybe a Christmas 2007 gift to self -- laptop with 17" monitor, 200 gb hard drive, and 4 gig of RAM, beefed up graphics card, and of course, due core technology! I take any donations to help pay for my dream laptop.

Enjoy my related story on Vista and let me know your adventures as you navigate the Vista landscape out there.

Whenever someone asks my advice on which computer to buy (and I get asked a *lot*), I ask them what they intend to do with it. There's a lot of marketing money spent to convince people they need the biggest, the latest, the fastest... and often, it just isn't true.

What compelling reason is there to upgrade to Windows Vista? At the moment, there's still a lot of software that isn't compatible with it, whereas Microsoft has had years to stabilize XP and third parties have had years to make their software stable on top of it. In addition, to really take full advantage of Vista you need a pretty high-powered machine.

My advice: let the early adopters spend the money and shake the bugs out of it, then just get Vista for "free" when you buy your next computer. Unless there's really something on Vista that you can't do on XP, upgrading the OS is, at the moment, wasted money.

As for the Mac comment... well, it does seem that Microsoft is trying to catch-up here. See these links, for instance:

I do think anyone in the market for a computer today should give the Mac serious consideration. Heck, the current crop of Macs can even run Windows, if needed. Again, it all comes down to what you want and need the computer to do.

Hey Bob!! I found you!!!
We just purchased a new laptop with Vista.
I have yet to be able to touch it though.
My husband has not given me a chance yet.
As soon as I learn more I'll give you my opinion.
Great to see you on here!
I love watching you on the weekends!

I guess the folks at Computerworld aren't as excited about Vista as I would have expected, judging by this article published today. The author, while noting several improvements, also has a list of grievances that he believes are a result of Microsoft being out of touch with consumers.

The article concludes "Despite the welcome improvements in Vista, using the product just isn't exciting or intriguing any longer. It's at least two years later than it should have been, and I don't absolutely have to have it. You don't either."

The writer is Scott Finnie, who's credited as Computerworld's online editorial director. Probably worth a read before spending money on upgrading an older system, I think.

I have tried the new Vista, and found that I don't care for it, at all. It has a lot of hang time, when trying to do certain things, and when you hit the CTRL, ALT, DELETE, it just doesn't work the same as in Windows 98 or XP. Overall, I am quite disappointed in it.
